It's official, Caroline is in, according to the AP. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/02/caroline-kennedy-paterson_n_154811.html
One thing that I find curious is that I've heard reporters and TV anchors refer to her as Mrs. Kennedy, when she is, infact, Caroline Kennedy-Schlossberg. Shouldn't they be calling her Mrs. Schlossberg, Mrs. Kennedy Schlossberg or at the very least Ms. Kennedy, not Mrs. Kennedy,
Officials say the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy will be the governor's choice to fill the New York Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Two people close to Gov. David Paterson tell The Associated Press they believe Caroline Kennedy will be his choice, but the governor cautions he's still looking. On Thursday, the governor disputed reports that he would hire a "caretaker" to keep the seat warm until the 2010 election.
Speaking to reporters at the Executive Mansion Thursday, Paterson said he intends to select someone with long-term interest in the job, not someone who would simply hold the seat until a special election next year.
Picking a caretaker, he said "would cause New York to lose seniority. And in the United States Senate, the most effective senators are the ones who have seniority. So I'm hoping the person I select wins the primary." -
Amy, thanks for posting and setting rumors to rest ...
-----------
I think people want to make sure they know she is a Kennedy. That name brings in supporters, money and prestige ... but I personally think she should be called by her hyphenated name since she is married. And definitely not Miss --- I think that should be discontinued altogether except for minor children -- Ms should be the accepted and pc term to address all women, like Mr for men. But not all will agree with me ... whatever floats the boat.
------------
I haven't heard, where are the Obama's going to stay? They are moving this weekend so the girls can start school.
-
I can't beleive that they will nominate Caroline to Senate. I saw some of her interview clips: she did not appear as a bright person at all. In fact the meida on the left and on the right. were questioning how a person who went to such a presigious school as Harvard Law school could be so lacking.
-
Amy,
I found out from one of your friends that your ban was over and you can post. I am glad to see you back and I really mean it. I wrote a letter to moderators asking them to reinstate you as originaly I misunderstood this ban business and thought it was a permanent thing.
You adn I disagree on a lot of issues , but I don't hink either one of us should silenced
-
rm- the Obamas are staying at a hotel where they can see the White house from their windows (no, not in alaska, LOL). Apparently it's right across the street. I wish the Bushes had been sensitive to the girls starting school and made the Blair House available. Agree with you about using Ms. when unsure. I get so mad when people call me Miss or even worse, Mrs. and I usually tell them, "I go by dr." .( I never went by dr. except when dealing with clients' insurance or other client services.) Caroline goes by "Caroline Kennedy" when she writes. I'm not sure if she kept her maiden name or did the hyphen thing. I know I have heard her referred to, in the media as Caroline Kennedy-Schlossberg, though I'm not sure if that is how she refers to herself. Most of my friends/famil in professional positions either kept their maiden name or use their maiden name for their professional work. I think that's because they didn't get married until after grad or medical school so it was easier. If I am given the right to legally marry and find that special someone, I would like to combine our names like Amy and Caroline Smith-Kennedy or Kennedy-Smith.
again, ijl- your negativity and judgment shines through.
Ladies- remember we have nothing to defend.
-
You are so right Amy! And to set the record straight, there are many of us on this thread including myself--a heterosexual--are disturbed and disappointed that Warren was chosen. Amy's description of him couldn't have been more succinct--disrespectful, misguided & hateful--perfect adjectives for his kind of "spiritual guidance" if anyone (not me) wants to call it that! How anyone, gay or straight would want to join a church where one class of people are denied entrance is unbelievable to me. I certainly understand why gays don't--they aren't allowed to join. DUH!! But I don't have one hetero friend or colleague that would join that church if they lived in that community.
I'll say it again, over and over, because I have the right to express my opinion--there will be no true freedom in this country until all of us are free--it's called equity, not equality!!
Happy New Year Ladies! It's going to be big change in our country in 2009!! Whooooooooooo-hooooooo!! I am doing the happy dance and can't wait for Jan 20th!!
Oh, and Amy, last but not least, welcome back woman!! You are right, your friends here missed you big-time!!
-
Sometimes the political threads on this board remind me of the Middle East. Periodic dust-ups followed by truces and periods of relative calm, followed by dust-ups. Unlike the actual situation in the Middle East, however, I hope we can start the New Year with a lasting peace. Or peace at least.
I don't know if Kennedy is the best choice, but if she really blows it, she can always be voted out in 2 years. I do think it's good to have a woman take Hillary's place, as well as someone who's a true-blue New Yorker. The fact that she's only just recently become interested in joining the political fray may actually work in her favor. With all the scandals involving ego-obsessed, entrenched politicians, Caroline's late-blooming could be seen as refreshing. She seems really inspired by Obama and the post-Bush age. (I agree, though, that calling her Mrs. Kennedy is wrong, wrong, wrong!)

I think I'd like to see them. If it's happening, it's a violation of TOS, as we are not supposed to report posts that simply disagree with someone else's opinion. I believe that button is meant to keep spammers out, not to control the site.
I'm new here, so if this is happening the only fair thing to do is prove the allegations we've heard for the past few weeks so things can be fixed. The playing field for me is already uneven, as I only get to post about 5 times per day. I don't think it would be in keeping with the objective of the site if new people like myself were ganged up on by people who were abusing the site's software to get us kicked off.
And you need to do it quick before you're banned, even though you're not a spammer. That button is apparently just too attractive for some people here.
Oh, and Shirley - the mods don't ban anyone. The software does. If you people are ganging up and hitting the button it is YOU who are banning people. And, please. I've read the republican thread. I've seen what you women call people and you get by with every bit of it. We all know that it is spammers you're supposed to report, not someone who slung it back at you.
If there is no proof in posting what was offered, what's the problem?
Post it.
-
Barb, I was not going to respond to anything here...but you called out my name.
I have no idea how people get banned. That is something I'd have to ask the mods.
Since you are new it seems like you know a heck of a lot more than me who has been here since 2005. I have not been reporting people to the mods. SO, don't assume I have..you know what assume means. And, on this very thread there has been a lot of name calling and people have gotten by with it.
I have ALWAYS supported women on other threads. I have never talked negatively to them or try to psychoanalyze them when they needed a shoulder or a soft place to fall. If I cannot support them then I will not respond to them...I just go on my way.
You, Barb, do not know me. The repub thread is NOT me. I've read many things here and found it just as disturbing as the things you have read on the repub thread. It must have taken you a very long time to read ALL of the repub thread to base your opinion on me. So, are you really new to this board? Or are you using a different name?
And, it was reported on this thread that Amy had been banned and it was inferred that she was banned FOR GOOD! We were told the mods sent her a LETTER with the NAMES of the women who reported her or whatever. Well, Barb, no where would my name show up. And I don't believe the mods sent Amy a letter with names. Don't assume I did ANYTHING to report ANYONE.
Shirley
-
Barbed Wire: since you're so "new" ... why not just post about Obama here instead of trying to rile this whole thing up? Since you're so "new" how would you know if the mods ban people or not? But I think you can probably just use one of your other aliases and get around the 5 post limit.
-
Don't you belong in the republican thread? Isn't that why I was banned when I first came aboard -- because I was posting in your 'respectable' thread? Shouldn't you be respectable over there?
An offer was made. I am not 'riling' anything up. You either did it, or you didn't. Either way, I had nothing to do with it. I just think it should be posted. If you have nothing to hide, feel free to toddle on back to your thread. (Watch, everyone! I'll be banned quicker than a cat can lick its behind!)
And if you'll read a back a page or two you will find that I have been banned for a week. Of course, you know all about that don't you?
Innocent, innocent Shirley. Perhaps you'd like to tell us what $! (republican thread, page 173, Jan 1, 2009 12:31 pm) means. Oh, and I only have five posts so be precise. I'm not going to waste all of them on you women who belong in your own thread.
And sweet, innocent Shirley...it's hard to 'call you out by name' when I am RESPONDING to your post from the page before this one. Now isn't it?
Oh and Rock whateveryourname is...read the thread. The the answers to your redundant questions are already there. Who are you going to accuse me of being today? Lemme guess...I'm the one offering the proof above, right? No. Wait. I'm blaest. Right?
-
Amy,
again, ijl- your negativity and judgment shines through.
Why should I not be judgemental when I hear a candidate for US Senate constantly using words "you know", "hmm" and "like" in her speech. There are other candidates who are much smarter and infinitely more qualified for this job. Their only shortcoming is the fact that they are not Kennedy. Is that fair, I ask you ? Should we not get the best people for job regardless of their gender, race and last name ? I mean Harvard can let any Kennedy in just based on their name , but they are a private insitituition , should the U.S. government do the same ?
-
Obama is moving this weekend out of Chicago ... do you think he will have a meeting with Blago while he is there?
-
Amy -- I'm so glad you're back; happy new year!
In 1967, (then) Minister of Justice Pierre Elliott Trudeau said "The state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation" and decriminalized homosexuality. Today, some of Canada's various legislatures are discussing the elimination of prayer and, in essence, taking "God" out of the state. ( In fact, one province has already done so). In such a religiously and culturally diverse country, this seems only fair. Fortunately, the evangelicals do not have the foothold on our nation's conscience that they still seem to have in the U.S.
I think the U.S. is very fortunate to have elected a President who is pragmatic rather than dogmatic. In selecting Pastor Warren (I agree, UGH!) perhaps Obama is simply saying to himself "Hey, maybe I can change the way this guy thinks". I'm truly hoping that one day, the U.S. will take "In God We Trust" off its dollar bills, and replace it with "In the American People We Trust". Maybe that will help get rid of the bigotry and hypocrisy, and bring about equity and true human rights for all.

linda- good to see you. Did you know that america was the ONLY western country not to sign the UN proclaimation to decriminialize homosexuality throughout the country? Bush and his ideology are embarrassments. 2 more weeks left for Bush to destroy the environment, nature and the economy. I hope he doesn't do too much more in that time. Thanks for the great quote. I don't think Bush will live long enough to come around to that philosophy. I so agree with you about taking the word god off money, and out of the pledge of allegiance. If people want to pray, that's their choice, the government shouldn't be involved. Most of the hate in the world seems to come from organized religion, so taking the word off money would be a good way to show the rest of the world we are for equality among people, not just white heterosexual christians.
I'm sure you heard about the muslim family that was removed from an airplane for talking about the safest place on a plane to sit. I've had that conversation on planes before. A teenage girl reported this "suspicious" activity. Transair announced that there was a possible security breech and paraded the family off the plane. The FBI soon realized this was a case of racial profiling and assisted the family in getting to their destination. Transair wouldn't seat the family, claiming the FBI hadn't given them clearance, even though an FBI agent was helping them get a flight. This disaster headlined the news in Holland, according to my friend and that it made the USA look bad. I'm glad. We deserve to look bad for that racial profiling. I hope the FBI had a good chat with the teenager who reported this as well as the pilot and transair who complicated things. We have to stand up for those minorities who are discriminated against, regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion etc.
serene- I love vanity fair!
gracey- I missed you. Sorry to forget you on the list.
barb- sorry your post was removed by the clique. Thanks for the pm. During the election one of the commentators said that the republicans are good at winning elections, they just suck at leading (I'm paraphrasing). Many republicans will pull out all the dirty tricks to try to get their way, whether that be racial divisiveness (the "Barack the magic negro" bigoted "parody" comes to mind), ganging up on folks. Thjey'll use every dirty trick in the book. Not all republicans, just the repug segment of the party, which unfortunately appears to be either a majority or a loud minority.
-
I think we should stop racial profiling as soon as we encounter non-Muslim terrorists.
I actually think we don't do enough profiling. All this PC stuff causes airport security search wheelchair bound grandmothers. How ridiculous is that ?
I remember when I went to Israel, they have a pscychological profiling. They ask you a few seemingly random questions and let you go. Then I come to Atlanta and first thing I see is the 80 year old grandmother in a wheelchair being making an effort to raise her hands for a search.
I wonder what would have happened if 9/11 passengers reported the terrorists for suspicious behavior.
-
Amy,
I dont' see how you can knock Bus down for non-support of gay rights, when Obama has Warren as an honored guest and active participant at his inaguration. And you still support Obama.
You are a bigger person than me. If my candidate won and then decided to invite Lou Farrakan to his inaguration, that would be a deal breaker for me. As a Jew I would not care about any good things, he might have done. I would take it very personally and withdraw my support.
-
ijl - I respectfully submit to you Oklahoma City bombing. Not only white male Americans, but a veteran to boot. Should we consider all white male American vets to be terrorists? Of course not. Unabomber? White American as well. Guy who probably sent anthrax through the mail? White American.
I have a former boss, who, despite the fact that he has what could be one of the highest security clearances possible, is on the do-not-fly-without-extreme-scruitiny list. Probably due to an Irish person, maybe IRA, maybe not, (yes, white and probably Catholic) with the same name.
The number of grandmothers in wheelchairs being taken aside for screening is more likely due to incompetent people in the TSA. That's not to say that all TSA employees are incompetent.
There are rules to be followed. There are drugs smuggled into this country via babies' diapers. That doesn't mean all babies are drug runners.
Remember, Muslim is a religion, not a race. There are lots of white Muslims. There are even Christians in the Middle East. I, for one, am of Middle Eastern descent and am Catholic.
What about the 86-year old man accused of being a Nazi war criminal? Age does not mean you get a free pass.
If I get a 4 oz tube of toothpaste taken away because I forgot to pack it into my checked bag, why shouldn't a 'grandmother in a wheelchair' be searched as well for the same thing?
Is this all a confusing mess? Darn right. Search everyone or search no one.
Going back to reading, not posting. Have a positive day.
-
I voted for Obama. I came here to read about the excitement leading towards his inauguration and as a new person feel sad about what I'm reading here. Racial profiling is just wrong no matter what your ethnic background or religion is. I think Obama has a great chance at leading this country in a new direction.
Mary
-
Yep, racial profiling is against the law ... I bet the teenager was just nervous but I feel sorry for the family who was probably just as nervous as she when they were trying to choose safe seats.
-
hola obama chicas!
just a matter of days now.
onward and upward!

I am sorry but we have to be practical. We don't have unlimited security resources. Obviously a vast majority of Muslims are not terrorists. But some of the fundamental islamists are. Look at Trade Center, London Subway and Madird bombings just to name a few. How many other active organizations you know at the moment that dedicate their life to terror against Western world.
These organizations are vast, spread out and well funded. You can knock Bush as much as you want but you have to admit that for 7 years we did not have a repeat of 9/11 and I am sure it was not for the lack of trying. I have two daugthers and it scares me to death to think that they may be victims of the next terrorist act.
We can't go around pretending that all of people should be equaually suspected of terrorism. I am against racial profiling such as stopping minority on streets just because they don't look like they belong there. There are gangs for every race and therefore all should be considered same.
But terrorism is different and we know who the groups are . Why should we look for white Irish catholic as a possible suspect ? Or why should we look at Chinese or Japanese for this matter ?
I feel sorry for Muslim people as most of them just want to live in peace and hate terrorsist as much as the rest of the world. A month ago we had an incident in California where some Muslim families reported that their high school sons disappeared and they suspected that they went to Middle East to join terrorist camps as they were brainwashed. It was hard to see the agony on the mothers' faces during the interviews.
But the unavoidable truth is that a small group of terrorists does operate in Muslim enviroment. Therefore it is only natural that there should be more scrutiny.
-
Very well said PSK. Thanks for the reminder that Muslim is a religion, not an ethnicity. I know I'm guilty of confusing the two.
While racial profiling is illegal, it goes on all the time. Proving a case of racial bias is very difficult. The same used to be true for women in the work place and the proverbial glass ceiling. LGBTs aren't currently covered in any hate crime legislation, thanks to Bush thinking we don't matter and/or we don't deserve protection. I can tell from some of the responses on here and in the public that some people don't believe middle eastern muslims should be protected either.
Terrorism, is in the eye of the beholder. To some countries, we are terrorists. To some countries Israel is a terrorist state. To some countries, Iran is a terrorist nation. We can't succomb to the belief that our point of view is the only one. i believe that we lose as a country when we fall into racial and ethnic stereotyping to target specific groups. We need to protect minorities, not target them. Imagine after Oklahoma city if all white men with bad haircuts were taken off airplanes. Imagine if all older gentlemen with an accent were rounded up because we thought they worked in Nazi death camps. It's all wrong. Bush did a great job of trying to scare folks for 8 years. That's why he got reelected. Change is here!
I know I've posted it before, but this poem speaks to me about profiling...
First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.
by Rev. Martin Niemoller, 1945
What about the Gaze strip? I think Bush is making a big mistake by unilaterally supporting Israel and calling Hamas terrorists. Even our media is slanted toward Israel and it's hard to get international unbiased facts. The situation isn't as black and white. I think that Israel is out of line with such a strong and deadly offensive. I think the country as a unit has ptsd because of the holocaust and is trying to swat a fly with a machete. Obama is in a tricky position because he can't contradict anything Bush says. I hope Hillary is ready to do some big time diplomacy. When Jimmy Carter tried, he got called antisemetic because he understood that for negotiations to work, both sides need to be heard and feel like they've made compromises and got something. This is so complicated because the whole middle east can be effected by Israel's and Palestine's actions.
-
How long would this country tolerate rockets being launched from Canada or Mexico and hitting neighborhoods and schools in the US before we retalliated?
I'm sure we would give the government in that country a very short time to find the culprits and put a stop to it, but I believe we would be talking hours or days, not weeks, months or years.
-
Great poem, Amy. I hadn't ever read that before.
-
Amy,
The Israel/Gaza strip mess is sooo complicated, it makes my head hurt. It doesn't seem helpful to cut off supplies to a small region, thereby creating a desperate humanitarian crisis. But the palestinians launch rockets into Israel. Ugh...can't these people ever sit down and TALK to eachother? I know I am over-simplifying, but can't all sides agree that they would be better off to reach a peaceful solution? Israel may be justified in doing what they are doing, but they are stirring up even more sympathy for Hezbollah and Hamas from Iran and Iraq. It is such a vicious circle. Way above my pay grade to speculate on a solution.
On the other hand, here in the good 'ol US of A, only 16 more days!
Whoooohooooo!
-
Amy,
Let me remind you what Obama said when visting Israel, I am paraphrasing it a bit from memory. He said "If someone was throwing rockets at the house were my daugthers sleep, I would definitely do something about it". Looks like he and I start having more and more in common.
Israel allowed 100 rockets to be launched at their cities during so called cease fire. Where were the protestors around the world ? Look at the West bank, Palestenians there are much better off since most of the terrorists left for Gaza. They live peacefully.
And btw did you notice that Arab world is not that vocal in response. And Egypt is shooting at all Palestenians who are tyring to cross the border to escape from Gaza.
