I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!  Hugs and kisses to all.

Did all of you see the thread asking for help for badboob67 (one of our cyber-mentors)?  She needs our help, and if you can, please try to be a part of what I am praying will be a Christmas miracle for her family.

    Good morning Held-

Hope you are well and had a good holiday.  I am looking forward to things calming down, but have had a wonderful holiday.  Next week my son and his girlfriend leave to go back to college (they have a 6 week break)....it has been great having them here.

I have such a sense of peace right now- as I think of the past few months there have been some really good, positive things happen within immediate family and extended family.  For today-things are good and I pray it is so for you.

Held. We're all still here, hovering right on the edges..... sending you strength and encouragement. Thought about you all thru today's sermon, which sorta rocked my sensabilities.

I think it's quite possible to worship and be outta step with the message (or delivery) or the sermon. At least that was me today. I'm not sure that you'd believe me if I told you today's topic. LOL. I guess they did get points for novelty.

Ok F&F----you have us all hanging with baited breath..............

.....our homily today was based on entertainment; specifically LIVE theatre: How we come together again & again to basically do the same thing, but just like a live show-it is different EVERY time.....bet my 16 yr old theater geek can give it all back to you as well as any adult (maybe better)

btw---I am in choir & we sit right behind the altar. He finished the homily by saying, "break a leg!"  I GUFFAWED at which point he turned around, looked right at me & said, "Not literally!" The whole church was LOL at our exchange..........

(For those who don't know-I have been healing from a broken femur for over a year & the whole church has watched the progress)

Seriously our sermon series for the Christmas season was entitled: "Box Office Bethlehem."

Each week of advent they focused on a different media sensation of the season and had footage play from the original film version.

The first week was: A Charlie Brown Christmas...... the Praise-team worship band played the theme music live. I got a little tear in my eye hearing Linus recite the Biblical story.

So week #1 got a couple of points for novelty.

We were outta town for a couple Sundays and made it back for installation #4 which was the movie about the kid that wants a b.b. gun and the continual line, "You'll shoot your eye out" was the refrain during the sermon. Maybe because I was not familiar with the movie -- the sermon seemed like a serious stretch to make a point what-so-ever, let alone the Sunday before Christmas. So now I'm sitting in the pew hurumphing.

But seriously I think it was an all-time low in sermon's I've ever heard when last Sunday the message was based on are you ready? drum roll please........

    FROSTY THE SNOWMAN!!!

I kid you not, I'm not creative enough to make this up!

So the ghist of the sermon was about 'new life' and how Frosty was granted new life..... the clip they showed was the north wind woshing into the green house and Frosty bouncing back to life.

I am seriously hoping that this was the final installment in the sermon-series from hehockeysticks. (IMHO)

I'm all for bringing faith into the context of our real lives. Making connections to reality and all the rest. And trust me, I don't ever consider myself to be a theologian..... but I've gotta say this cutsie attempt at watered down pablum was a real wet blanket to my personal journey toward Bethlehem.

So there you have it......... the rest of the story.

Hmmmmmmmmm. I wonder why no one served popcorn.

and yes, this was the actual Sunday morning 9:15 service -- not a Bible study in the middle of the week or something.

    novelty?? you be the judge.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Seekers!! Happy New Year!!

May we learn much from each other as the days unfurl. May our conversations continue with questions that vex us and may we listen with open hearts to the experiences of others -- from  traditions other than our own.

May we be willing to share and stretch and consider and rethink.

May we use the catalyst of our common denominator to explore the meaning behind our walk here.

May we reach out our hand to one in need, or one in fear.

May we hold each other up, due to the strength of our caring, the strength of our collective experience. May we know what a unique little group we are and may we mine that reality for all that we can find, thru our explorations together.

Much love to all who might every read here.

Strength and courage. Strength and courage.

Okay- vacation is over ladies :D  Hope you all had a good Christmas and time with family and friends.

Question for you all- I can't remember if we discussed this already but after a season of prayers, I started wondering what exactly is prayer, a prayer?  Are there different kinds of prayers?  Do prayers "work" if there are doubts about the church, god, the bible etc?  Whats the purpose(s) of prayer?

Dang EWB!  Nothing like starting off the year with a BANG!!! LOL!  That is a serious heavy-duty question or two!

I looked it up in wikipedia (yeah I know - silly place to look), but I liked what it said:

"Prayer is the act of attempting to communicate with a deity or spirit. Purposes for this may include worshipping, requesting guidance, requesting assistance, confessing sins, as an act of reparation or to express one's thoughts and emotions. The words of the prayer may take the form of intercession, a hymn, incantation or a spontaneous utterance in the person's praying words. Secularly, the term can also be used as an alternative to "hope". Praying can be done in public, as a group, or in private. Most major religions in the world involve prayer in one way or another.

The efficacy of prayer as a petition to a deity for physical healing has been evaluated in numerous studies, with contradictory results. There has been some criticism of the way the studies were conducted."

Personally, my "deity" is God the Father, Jesus his son and the Holy Spirit.  And yes, EWB I do believe God hears our prayers when we have doubts.

Prayer is simply: talking to God.........doubtful times may be the BEST times for prayer....there are TONS of kinds of prayer (I have taught some of them to convert & confirmation classes)

This sure is a great way to launch the new year!!!!!! I agree with Held----ALL our prayers are heard!

What a shame that we (the world in general) take something a simple as "just talking to god" and turn it into a big formal scary thing, as if there is only one way to do it, say it etc. Simply talking to god (or deity of your choice) is comforting.

My wonderful mentors and sister, my family could really use your prayers.  My DH and little ones and I stayed up late to ring in the new year - gladly getting rid of the old one.  We were looking forward to a happy, healthy, CALM 2009.  Then.............my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer this week and will need 8 weeks of radiation, assuming the cancer has not spread. On top of that there is some SERIOUS drama going on between my dh, his sister and his mother.  The details aren't important but the end result may be that my mil may end up living with us in a house that is already too small for the 4 of us.

I called my DM to ask for prayer and she started in on me about God only giving us what we can handle, bla, bla, bla.  I got annoyed. My dh is not religious at all.  During all the drama with me, I doubt his relationship with God did anything but go backwards.  In his eyes God ignored our prayers, and now it is happening all over again.  I don't even think I can express my feelings right now.  UGH!!!!  Prayers, PLEASE!!!!

    Sending my prayers, Held...............

Hang in there. One day at a time. Take a deep breath. You can do this. A stitch in time.

What other platitudes can I offer, when it feels like things are coming apart at the seams?

Know that we are all here gathered to hold your hand, offer a hug, a shoulder to cry on -- whatever it takes to help you.

Thinking of you this morning, Held.

Know that you are surrounded by the strength of this place, to face whatever comes down the road.

We are all packed up and heading to FL at the end of the day. I must finish my recording project, by getting it "mastered" -- which will take the whole day and then we're leaving tonight.

I'm sooooooooooooo ready for a change of scenery and a break in the action.

much love to all the Mentor-ers.

Another morning. Another prayer for you, Held.

Be strong. Be of good courage.

Shine your little light into the darkness.

We've arrived in the sunshine of FL. They are having an uncommon "cold" snap..... only made it to 65 degrees. We're happy not to be shoveling any of the accumulation that's piling up at home.

Sorry if I worried you.  Family drama is never fun.  Yesterday was a real doozie! Cry  My MIL called me in a panic, freaking out (while I was at work).  So I had to call my FIL and then my dh and then my MIL back and then my dh again........ sigh.

My fil had his MRI yesterday.  I am worried my fil will choose no treatment if the cancer has spread.  No word on when he will get the results back. Frown

Then when I got home my dog (who has the dog version of MS) was slipping all over the place and fell outside and again inside.  It broke my heart.  So I called my vet, and took him over fully expecting to come home without him.  It was not a good scene.  My oldest dd not happy, but told me we should "do what is best for Jake". She is the best kid in the whole world. I cried in the car the whole way over, thinking about how he spent every second at my side when I was so sick last year.    Anyway, the vet was not convinced we had reached the end of the road with the dog, so she fixed up a bad boo-boo that he had, gave us some medication to give him and he happily came home with us.  He seems to be doing better today.

And the drama at work never ends.........working with women can be a real challenge!! LOL!

I am back to waking up in the middle of the night.  My dh tells me I toss and turn all night long, so I am waking him up and neither of us are getting any decent rest.

Anyway,  thank you so much for all your love, prayers and support.  I really feel loved!  Thank you!  Thank you, thank you!!!!!  You bring a ray of sunshine into my day!

By the way faith - thanks for bragging about the temperature where you are.  It is going to be a BALMY 6 degrees here tomorrow!!!!

Held. You'll be delighted to know I wore a hooded sweatshirt on our drive home tonight!! But no long-johns or woolie socks needed, so again -- all a matter of perspective!

    When it rains it pours...........

So sorry that you're in the middle of the family drama.

    I love my bumper sticker:

"I have resigned my job as general contractor of the universe."

So glad that Jake was able to make it thru this event.

Hugs, prayers, strength and love to you and yours.
