Afghan-Canadian new governor of Kandahar province
Updated Sat. Dec. 20 2008 11:16 AM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
An Afghan-Canadian academic was sworn in as the new governor of Kandahar Province on Saturday.
Tooryalai Wesa, who fled Afghanistan in 1991 and settled in Coquitlam, B.C., assumed his new post during a ceremony in Kandahar City.
After the ceremony, Wesa said he will make security a priority in an effort to curb violence in the region.
"I am not a magician," Wesa said in Pashto. "I don't believe in talking; I believe in practical work.
"I will show my work to everyone . . . and the day when the people of Kandahar understand that I can't work for them, I will go on my way."
Wesa assumes control over one of Afghanistan's most volatile regions, which has been besieged by attacks from Taliban militants.
In the past two weeks, six Canadian soldiers have been killed by roadside bombs in the province, which is home to most of Canada's 2,750 troops that are stationed in Afghanistan.
The Canadian commander of coalition forces in Kandahar province, Brig.-Gen. Denis Thompson, said it's not just the governor's job to establish security in the region.
"At the end of the day, this province and this region have to be secured by the people," Thompson said. "The people have to have the confidence that they can report on the movements of the insurgents so that the insurgents can be arrested or captured or killed."
Born and raised in Kandahar, Wesa has worked extensively in the province and is viewed as someone who can be an effective link between locals and the international force of soldiers, diplomats and aid workers in the region.
Wesa speaks Pashto, Dari, Farsi, English, German and Arabic, and has experience in both agriculture and education.
The 58-year-old studied agriculture at Kabul University before attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and then earning a PhD from the University of British Columbia.
His PhD thesis focused on the impact that the Soviet Union's occupation of Afghanistan had on the country's agricultural infrastructure.
Wesa is the region's third governor in less than a year. His predecessor, Rahmatullah Rauf, claims he was pushed out of the job in a local power play. His predecessor was allegedly involved in the torture of an insurgent prisoner.

Summer, I so hope that Wesar can do a good job. It's not going to be easy. Like he said, he's not a magician. And it's going to take work!

No doubt about that Shirley.

As we hear stories of woe, my son was here visiting for Christmas, and we're talking about his business and he tells me he's expanding to another State. Your expanding? NOW? Yup, was his reply. It seems that people with money/jobs still go on vacations and they're still carrying on like nothing is happening.
It took me 20 mins. to get out of the mall yesterday, the traffic was so bad. The restaurants were full, and life is going on. And to top it off, there is house down the street that actually has a sold sign on it. So with all this evidence of prosperity, I've decided to call off this recession.
-
Rosemary...same here! My daughter and son-in-law are opening their second Italian restaurant here where I live and my son and daughter-in-law are buying a condo in SanFrancisco (where they live) next week. The mall is full and in about an hour I am leaving for the airport to pick up my sister who is coming for Christmas...I am with you, I am calling off the recession!
-
I sometimes wonder if the doom and gloom and "the sky is falling" is all hype. Yeah, I know people are hurting, because everyone is cutting back and that is the problem. Everyone is fearful because we are constantly told it is bad and will get worse! Even Obama said this. I guess he feels if he tells us it is going to be bad, we will lower our expectations, and not blame him when he doesn't give us any change or hope. He will spend the next four years blaming Bush. In contrast, I still remember what Reagan said, coming into his presidency from a disastrous Carter administration, that had higher inflation, jobless rates, and mortgage rates than we have now. Reagan was all positive. He believed in the American people and that our hard work, not government would bring back prosperity, and he was right! The dems gain power and keep it by telling us they have the solutions. They believe government can solve problems. We just want the government out of out way! It is still amazing to me that we had six good years with Bush, and as soon as the dems came to power in the Congress, we had problems. Yet, they bear none of the blame. Bush has not always made the right decisions, but where are all the promises Pelosi made when she took charge. She and her ilk have not done a damn thing but take us down this road to disaster. In fact, I am suspicious that they orchestrated this collapse to take down the GOP. McCain was ahead until the dems brought on this banking disaster, which is a direct resulth of democrats insisting that loans go to those who cannot afford them Everything trickled down from there.

Rosemary,
I suppose that a crowded mall in Houston, a major city whose economy largely depends on oil companies, 5 days before Christmas, is good enough for you to declare the recession non-existent.
I suggest a good place to park is by that tall AIG building off the parkway - I understand there is plenty of space left by the the thousands of employees who lost their jobs in the last 60 days. Oh, and some of my co-workers who are being laid off in Houston because our clients, even oil companies (refining margins are down, what with the price of oil dropping like a rock) are stopping projects to upgrade systems, change business processes, etc. will be GREATLY relieved to hear that the recession is over,
Ironically, my employer was recently highlighted in a businss magazine as being "recession-proof" on the same day that I was scrambling to find roles to staff my peers in to avoid them being laid off. We announced earnings last week, increased over last year, but we are laying off employees GLOBALLY.
My brother, a staunch republican, worries everyday that his job with a major shipping company will be eliminated because project managers are classified as "expense" and expenses are the first thing to be cut when earnings drop, which is happening as we speak (when Americans aren't buying/selling cars, the need for shipping cars goes down.) Even he is praying that Obama can deliver some relief for the economy. I'll forward your declaration so that he can relax - heck, maybe he'll change his mind and haul the family to Dallas for Christmas, instead of staying home and saving money and working over the holidays to try and protect his job.

That Ronald Reagan, right? Didn't the deficit triple while he was president? And didn't he have alzheimers while he was president? I mean, I sympathize with anyone who has alzheimers and I certainly feel for their families but someone whose brain is wasting away should not be running this country, IMHO.
Here's Reagan's legacy:
A look at recessions past
- 1980s
The US sank into a painful 16-month recession in 1981. Bankruptcies climbed and interest rates rose. President Ronald Reagan deemed the government too large at the time, and recommended that taxes be cut.

Jaedeen there are homeless no matter who has been in charge of a country.

I think it is a good thing that someone in charge of a nation was not privilged as a child. Like Reagan was and I believe Barack Obama is.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President-elect Barack Obama has decided to increase his goal for creating new jobs after receiving economic forecasts that suggest the economy is in worse shape than had been predicted, two Democratic officials told CNN.
The officials said Obama is increasing his goal from 2.5 million to 3 million jobs over the next two years after receiving projections early this week that suggest the recession will be deeper than expected.
The projections showed that unless significant action is taken, the nation is likely to lose up to 4 million jobs over the next year and that the unemployment rate will probably rise above 9 percent, a transition aide told CNN.
After hearing the projections, Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden "argued that we were being too timid and that we needed to develop a plan that would save or create at least 3 million jobs," the aide said.
One of the officials said Obama challenged his economic team to "think bolder" as some economists warn there is danger in the government doing too little to curb the recession.
They said the stimulus plan in the works in the Obama camp would have "oversight and transparency measures" to ensure spending on the plan would be focused on stimulating the economy and not devolve into just handing out congressional pork projects. They said it also would include measures that will "lay a foundation for a stronger economy in the future" -- such as health care, education and energy spending.
Other measures included weatherizing 1 million homes, saving the federal government $1 billion in energy costs, modernizing schools and doubling renewable energy production, among other initiatives, the transition aide said.
Obama also stressed to the team that it can't rely on "traditional Washington programs and politics" when drawing up the economic recovery package, the aide said. That means no earmarks, a use-it-or-lose-it policy for local funding, full transparency and "investing in what works," the aide added.
On Friday, Obama had repeated his original goal while announcing appointments to his Cabinet and economic team.

The Obama team isn't putting a price tag on its economic stimulus plan, which Democratic leaders want to have ready for the president-elect to sign either on or very soon after Inauguration Day. The transition aide told CNN that Obama aides met with Capitol Hill staff this week to discuss plans costing between $675 billion and $775 billion.

djd wrote: I have used the term "repug" in the past. In my mind, it's a play on the shortened version of Republican - "Repub", with the g substituted for the b, to be the shortened versioned of repugnant.
Repugnant means "incompatible, inconsistent, hostile and offensive" so when you casually "drop" the "p" and replace it with the "g" this is what you are insinuating republicans are.
Dimwit means "stupid or mentally slow person" So when they "drop" the "e" and sub "i" & "wit" this is what they are insinuating democrats are.
The truth of the matter is, both sides don't like it when people disagree with them, and post their disagreements. So both sides lash out at each other. But at the end of the day, we are all members of the same "sorority" called "breastcancer" and while we might "beat-up" on each other, I would bet we would also be the first to defend each other if someone on the "outside" messed with one of our "sisters". When I was young, I was MEAN to my older sister, but if anyone else was mean to her I was the first one to her defense.
With all that said I do have a question. I have read some posts back that many people from the "homosexual" community are claiming discrimination and how people don't know what it is like to be discriminated against like they do and how they are treated as if they are less than "human" because of their sexual orientation. Can someone give me examples of actual discrimination -other than the marriage thing- of how they (or you as the case may be) have been treated less than human because of your sexual orientation?
When I here of people being discriminated against and being treated less than human I think of slaves - to - civil rights, and Jews - to - concentration camps. Maybe I have been out of the loop but I just havent heard of homosexuals being forced to endure anything even remotely close to true discrimination.
My brother is a homosexual and other than marriage, he has the same rights as every body. He has a professional career making six figure income, lives in an exclusive neighborhood, drives a really cool sports car, travels all the time, has parties and is invited to parties. He even goes to church with his partner.
So, maybe someone here can help me understand?
-
When you say that he has the same rights as everybody else, but follow that with the words 'other than,' you have answered your own question.
And yes, Summer, there are homeless people regardless of who is in charge of the country. However, when leadership has oatmeal for brains and wants to call ketchup a vegetable on school lunches, which was the one square meal a day that those homeless kids had and when homelessness was part of his legacy, it's different. He slashed federal programs, grew the military machine and said that homeless people were homeless by choice.
He was an embarrassing, nasty little man, IMHO.

djd,
No one is declaring the bubble hasn't burst. Jobs are being lost, there's no doubt about it and yet some places are looking for employees, or planning on expanding. AIG? Of all the companies to bring up. If the parking places are empty there, who should we blame for that? Just check the resorts, maybe they're on another sabbatical.
Yes, it took Reagan a few years to get us out of Carter stagflation. It finally was done by lowering taxes and getting big gov't. under control. For all those Alzheimer days he did a damn good job of it wouldn't you say Jaedeen? And Oatmeal brain just saved 3 million jobs. I wonder how much of this would be happening if the democrats running the show wouldn't have pushed all those bad loans on the unworthy?
It is a well known fact to watch for housing starts for a decline in our prosperity. That couldn't be monitored correctly because the gov't created that bubble. We've gone over this a thousand times here. So what's the point? Take from the facts that which you will. Just blame it all on Bush. But we still know what really went on. Thanks Barney, Maxine, you both do good work and the rest of those democrat numbnuts on the banking committee...thanks a lot.
If anyone has complaints about losing their jobs, Barney and Maxine has mailing addresses. Let them hear from you.

Congress isn't doing a good job of being watchdogs of where our money is going. They gave billions to the banks without them having to give reports about where and what they're spending the money on. The banks refuse to discuss it because the congress forgot to put in the necessay verbiage to be watchdogs over the funding. Just lovely. Thus, we see one bank buying a bank in China. That frees up money for our lending? That stimulates our economy?
And now we have another package getting ready to be signed on Jan. 21st without our knowing where $800 billion is going, and who will be on the oversight committee, or how much carte blanche is written into it. Here's your money, go get em. They aren't quick learners either from their mistakes. Yet they roasted and toasted the car industry to make themselves look good, as if we wouldn't notice the mistakes of just throwing money at an industry without any controls being placed on them.
Doesn't this just frost you?
"Those with high blood pressure and low account balances may want to skip this item. Because, in what is sure to become yet another public relations disaster for the financial industry, an AP analysis has determined that banks receiving $188 billion in government bailout money paid their top execs almost $1.6 billion last year. The AP review of SEC documents found that the companies awarded the biggest of their bigwigs "cash bonuses, stock options, personal use of company jets and chauffeurs, home security, country club memberships, and professional money management." "Professional money management"? How much can that be worth, anymore? Give us a good mattress."
-
The Dems pushed for the bailout that isn't working .... & you know who is going to get the blame? Bush! Now the Dems are going to spend billions more. They use the word transparency but look what happened with Blago ... oh it will take Obama a few weeks to be transparent ... no comment ... Same old politics as usual.

Just a little more on the banks not having to account for any of the money. We are left to just begging them to do the right thing.

Rosemary, I couldnt have said it better myself! Great post(s)!
AND I agree that the media has cause so much of the "panic". My hubby works for a worldwide company and for the first time in the 15 years he has been there, he brought home a HUGE "extra" cash bonus! This was on TOP of the standard bonuses that management gets at the end of every year. It was a total unexpected surprise! And guess what? He does NOT work for any of the companies asking for bail-outs. You know WHY his company is STILL making PROFITS even during this "recession"??????? Because they have CFO's that have some sense and can actually caluclate expenses based on "actual" income---not "hopefully maybe" income!!!!!!!!!!
I am with you Rosemary44, lets all declare the recession over, get to shopping and maybe, just maybe, the recession WILL BE OVER!!!!! But if we dont spend, it will get worse.
-
moodyk13,
My husband just lost a job in high tech industry, first time in his life it happened. And I promise you the recession is real. Even before my husband lost his job, we began to be frugal with the money afer all our 401k became 201k. And so are my friends who do have very good jobs. We just came from Las Vegas where we went for my parents 50th annversary and a cab driver told us that he does not remember things being that slow, he's been there for 20 years. The mall may be full but look at the prcies. One has to wonder how much actual profit do retailers make.
All the high tech companies are affected as the capital equipment investment is slowing People have problems with credit and mortgages. This is a dire situation. We are wtinessing financial and housing market collapse with the consumers not wanting to spend. I am very worried and hope that Obama's team will make the right move.
-
The difficult part of being in the middle of this turmoil is that we don't know which way it's going. Things are so much more clear in a rear view mirror
It may be that Obama's economic team will be very aggressive: tax cut and stimulus package which will result in a faster recovery than originally thought. Or they will spent us out into inflation, which will cause an even worse recession. Right now we just don't know. But I've got to admit that even though I was for a long time a supported of "unchecked" capitalism, I am coming to recognize that we do need stricter regulations. I was shocked to hear Greenspan to say that he miscalculated by believing that banks and financial institutions will "protect" their customers. Instead we have seen so much unrestrained greed and not in a good sense.
In some way I think we are going through the cleansing exercise that could make us stronger getting rid of all the excesses, but boy does it hurt
-
Rosemary and Rocky, you've said it all. Of course I haven't page 168 yet..LOL
Yep, dimwits are trying their hardest to blame the housing crisis on Bush. Yet Bush warned and the repuBlicans warned what was gonna happen. MUST I post ALL those videos again where Maxine with her big mouth spouting off how wonderful everything was. And Barney...and other dimwits who was jumping all over the regulator while the repuBlicans warned and wanted reform. I don't see any of the dems on this board responding to those videos. They said Freddie and Fannie were doing a FINE job. Wanna see them again?
There easily found. Do your homework!
-
I'm still for capitalism. I think people who earned or inherited wealth should not have to share it with us. I do think at this time CEOs could be a bit more frugal with our tax money...GIVE UP THE FREAKING PRIVATE JETS THAT'S COSTING $20,000 to fly. Take a first class commercial flight for Pete's sake if you can't fly in the back like the rest of the poor people. This is ridiculous. And, for these CEOs to receive MILLIONS for their work in 2007 is absolutely ridiculous. Like the guy on my favorite cable network news channel, Fox News, said...let them quit..see if they can find another job making millions per year. You know..the reason for keeping these CEOs is that they are too good to lose thus paying them millions! But, the good news is, I think some of them will be receiving ONLY their $600,000 salary for this year...but what about all the perks!?
The financial institution should be ashamed of themselves. They won't lend the money therefore the economy will never get on it's feet. I'm am furious about that!
So far my children are doing fine. I just hope they continue. I think I already posted that one of my dd had to fly to Richmond to be their for the lay off of two men (she's HR manager) from a very large international company. She said the men were beside themselves. I don't know how she stood there without crying. I almost started crying. Then my attorney dd (and I posted this already) was helping a client do his bankrupt for his company...250 employees laid of. The poor fella said he was so depressed...didn't know where he'd get a job...was a black mark on him...HORRIBLE! My dd went into her partners office after the client left and cried!
Shelters are running out of food..Salvation Army is running out of places for people...Charities are not receiving money..bc.org is asking for money. It's scary. It's all around us. We are in a real recession. Some people are still doing well, but many have been given heart breaking news.
A friend of mine's son went to put his application in at at pizza place. The owner said he had run out of applications. Her son said the people there we well dressed...meaning they used to have good jobs or better than a pizza delivery guy or cook.
ilj, yes I hope things can turn around. But don't bet on it just because Obama's president. He has acknowledged that it's worse than he thought.
Does the negativity all over the news help us..hell, it's just plain true. If lending doesn't lossen up where can the economy go..no where! Oh, and now I hear the developers will have their hands out for some bailing out.
That's my rant for now!
-
BTW, I'm leaving town tomorrow for the Christmas Holidays. I hope I can get my mind off this mess while I'm there with my grandchildren. I don't get to watch TV so won't be able to watch the news.
-
Um ........ tonight, driving by Macy's at 6pm, you could park in front. MY PAYCHECK is going to be almost 0 ... the recession is real. I will probably lose my house, our employer is not going to make it and we won't have a job.
-
This whole financial mess is because of the housing market. Not only did people get loans that they could not afford, but housing prices in some areas were so overinflated that folks were buying a little that was costing a lot. People were flipping and driving up real estate prices. It was much worse on the coasts, so it makes sense that those areas are suffering more now. Maybe you all need to move to the midwest? It is not as bad. Well, stay out of Detroit, and unless you want to hear Frankenstein as your Senator, stay out of Minn. But they have some nice folks and a great senator in OK!
Merry Christmas everyone. Remember the reason for the season. No matter how thin the wallet is getting, what really matters is faith and family, good health, and good friends. May you all have all of that!
-
Rock you can come live with me. Of course you have to travel all the way across the country. I guess my talking about bonuses was insensitive to you. I would never want to make you feel bad. There are so many people like you out there who are the REAL victims in all this mess.
Here me out on this because it is a perfect example of ONE of the reason's we are, where we are:
14 years ago, we were house hunting. We knew how much we could afford to pay per month and we knew how many years we wanted for a mortgage. So I was able to calculate it to determine what price range we needed to look at. Well the real estate broker said they would "pre-qualify" us. So she comes back to me all "giddy" telling me we "qualified" for a house TWICE the price range I said we needed to shop for!!!
I knew that it didnt matter what we "qualified" for, I knew what my bank account "qualified" me for and that is the price I stuck with. She tried so hard to show us higher priced homes, but I stuck to me guns! 14 years later, we are still there and we can still afford our mortgage.
Now while we were sticking to our "guns" I had SOOOO many friends being told the same thing and they were like "Oh well, WE qualified for THIS much so WE are moving HERE.....yada yada yada" Like they were "rich". Well guess what, so many of them have lost their homes.
The point I am trying to make, is in the end, each one of us is responsible for our own actions. And when this many people see $$ in there eyes and think they can live in exclusive neighborhoods and how important it makes them feel are the ones that have put us all in this mess! You rock are an unfortunate victim of the "Smith's keeping up with the Jones' " mentality. Just think if all these people hadnt been spending above their means, when times got tough, I bet there would have been $ in the banks to help themselves out. Then YOU wouldnt be out of a job.
So when I hear of people like you, who played by the rules are the ones losing everything it makes me even MORE mad at people who blame government for their own mistakes.
Ya'll can blast me all you want. You can keep blaming the Dem's and the Rep's all you want, but at the end of the day, the person whipping out that credit card to buy something they couldnt afford to pay for are the ones you need to blame. The people who didnt take control of their own bank accounts and let some agent or lender "convince" them they could afford something they knew inside they couldn't are the ones putting us in this mess.
So people like you who did it right have been forced to go through their savings that you had, and lose the job you devoted your life to and for people like you, it SUX!!!!!!!!
I worked with a girl one time that couldn't afford to pay her rent and was stressing about telling the land lord. 2 days later she comes to me and says "I'm getting a boob job!" I said "I thought you couldnt pay your rent!" She said we cant, but my hubby just got a new credit card in the mail and that is what we are going to use to get my new boobs!!!!!! My friends, this is not an isolated incident. I am sure we all know people who lived like this, and these are the ones that end up defaulting on loans. These are the kind of people I am referring to.
-
Well, the housing market did cause this.. ..Sad for me, I could afford my mortgage, I did buy it right before the prices went up. Its my job ... NO ONE is lending money for RVs, and almost no one is buying one.
-
Moody, I've got to agree. We have bought 3 houses over the last 26 years, and every time, we were told that we qualified for much more of a debt load than what we were willing to carry. We outgrew that first house very quickly, but when we sold it, we had a good down payment for the next one.
People can't predict losing their jobs, but soooo many people, if they were honest with themselves, could have predicted that they were buying things like houses and cars that they couldn't afford.
Many Special Ed students get a course in independent living that many of our kids (and a number of adults) could benefit from. Because they are not likely to pick these things up on their own due to their disabilities, they are actually taught how to comparison shop, and how to figure out if they can afford to buy something or not, how to apply for a job, how to write a resume, how to fill out a job application. how to read classified ads etc. We all know people who could have benefited from a course like that.
The banks should not have loaned money to people who had no chance of paying it back, but those people are also responsible for taking the money that they knew, or should have known they could not afford to take.
-
Rocktobermom,
I hate to hear this happen to you. I went through similar times back in the 80's. I just wouldn't let anyone or anything make me lose my home. Nothing. No matter what it took, I was going to stay there. It took a lot, but I kept it till the kids went off to college. It was too big for me, so eventually I sold it. At first everything looked dismal, but once you come out the other side, intact hopefully, it feels really good.
To change the subject for a bit. People are getting annoyed with their anointed one. I got this email today. I don't even know how I got on this group's list:
Dear Friends,
At noon on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 2009, time will stop.
Most of the country, and much of the world, will tune in to one of the most celebrated swearing-in ceremonies in history. More than 4 million Americans are expected to attend in person. It is an event that all of us - especially our children - are likely to remember forever.
To usher in this historic moment, President-elect Barack Obama has chosen the controversial Rev. Rick Warren - a conservative evangelical who opposes choice and fervently advocated for California's Proposition 8 to ban gay marriage - to deliver the Inaugural invocation.
Join us in calling on the President-elect to make a different choice. This Inauguration should be about celebration for all Americans. It should be about respect. It should be about dignity. It should be about equality for all. It should be about unity. It should be about hope.
Putting Rev. Warren in the spotlight at such a sacred moment in our nation's history is offensive to women, to LGBT Americans, and to the voters who supported President-elect Obama. The Obama camp claims the move represents the President-elect's commitment to inclusiveness. But, in fact, this is a gesture to reach out to conservatives who opposed President-elect Obama at the expense of women, LGBT Americans, and other progressive voters who overwhelmingly supported him.
It is disrespectful. It is antagonistic. It is a decision that is blatantly at odds with the progressive agenda on which he based his campaign. It is divisive, not inclusive.
This historic election is supposed to be about a vision of a new America - an end to politics of division. And yet President-elect Obama has made a choice to give prominence and pulpit to a promoter of an anti-choice and anti-gay agenda. He has chosen to highlight and give voice to someone who has actively supported the elimination of civil rights. He has chosen a divisive figure to speak out in a moment of prayer, on an historical day of bringing Americans together.
We're all in favor of dialogue, but this is not the place. This is too important of a platform. Not the Inauguration, not Warren, not now.
////////////////////////////
They might mean it's offensive to some women, I'm not offended. Yes, to Rev. Warren, and yes, now. Or would they prefer Rev. Wright?
