Positive Obama thread

OMG(oodness)!! Can't say the god word--that would offend someone...can't say this, can't say that for fear of stepping on someone's toes...wow, the last few pages of posts have made my head spin!! Truly do not intend to step on anyone's toes but am impelled to make a few comments--in random order (because my brains are scrambled just now).....
CA does deal with massive financial budgetary drains caused by "those people" (not sure what label I can appropriately put to them)....but, here, in the kind of south midwest--we DO have the same problem, as well as does a lot of the U.S. We have a tremendous Hispanic population, a lot who work--legally or not--in the many area agricultural areas--crops, chickens; almost every help wanted ad in our newspaper states to apply only if you are bi-lingual--Spanish/English. We also have small, but growing community from the Marshall Islands.
...the legal/illegal/immigrant/alien issue is not restricted to any one area in the U.S.
My DH worked long and hard for many years. He draws a retirement check from the fed govt and also gets a social secuity check each month--BUT--although he worked his max credits to qualify for soc sec, that check is vastly reduced due to his fed retirement. I retired from working for the fed govt--thought to maybe go back to work part-time and get my soc security quarters--was told by soc sec--doesn't matter! Even if I maxed out my soc sec qtrs, basis my fed retirement, the reduction would be such that I would never qualify for a soc sec payment----so, go figure! (LOL--you can bet I didn't go beating the bushes for a part-time job!!!)
Am totally flabbergasted about the leper/leprosy dialogs.......have a friend who recently returned from a trip to Molokai and met with a few people who knew her grandmother. Her grandmother was exiled to the island because of her disease and friend never had an opportunity to meet her in life. But, pretty sure she used the words leper and leprosy.......
The N-word. Much to my chagrin that slipped out recently in a heated political discussion...a concerned discussion about the tremendous target BO now wears.....(sorry, can't finish this without making a lot of people angy......)
So, I haven't covered much on all the topics of conversation for last few pages...please PM me if you want to "contraversary with me"....
Think I am confused and saddened that any opinion expressed by anyone is so immediately jumped on by anyone who has a different opinion--and not in a nice way...not just here, but all over the boards...
can I just say, "happy holidays" without stirring up a hornet's next???
huggggssssssss

When I was a kid, the TV stations ran frequent PSAs at this time of year reminding us that resident aliens need to register during January. The term consistently used was aliens, so I believe that is the correct term to use for non-citizens who immigrated here from another country.
The other terms are immigrants, which to refers to people who came from another country, and emigrants, which refers to people who leave a country to go to another. So they emigrate from the country of their birth, and immigrate to the country they choose to live in.
Whether they acquire and/or maintain their legal resident status is a separate and different question. Noting that legal status or lack thereof is not an insult, it is simply stating fact.
All but one of my grandparents came to this country from somewhere else, and the one who was born here had both of his parents arrive from elsewhere. They all went through the process, learned the language, and became citizens. Only two of them lived long enough to collect Social Security, and they had both paid into the system from the time it was created.
If people come here, play by the rules, pay taxes, learn the language, they make this country richer both monitarily and culturally. When they participate in a shadow economy, choose not to learn the language, but still use services, that hurts us all. That doesn't make them horrible people, but it hurts all of us, and recognizing that and taking steps to deal with it is responsible, not "prejorative".
Isn't it great that someone can come to this country (legally) fall in love with, and marry a citizen, and have their child grow up to become President (elect)? Isn't that limitless potential the reason that so many of us are here, and that so many other people want to come here?

Wolf Pack
I once posted on a board with private messaging enabled. There are good, honest people who can hold their own in debate and then there are people who are not there to debate. They're there to control.
The wolf pack on that site would use private messaging to mount a covert attack on the other members of the site to get them bounced so that they could control the place. Private messaging was disabled for a time because of this.
That's because If all it took was 10 or 12 controlling people who were using private messaging as a tool to mount an attack to get posts that they disagreed with deleted from the site, it was not a good rule. That is, it was not a good rule for the majority. For the small wolf pack, it was great!
Kinda reminds me of Washington politics.
One more thing: I don't think God is happy that He is mentioned on American currency. For those who read the Bible, Jesus threw the money changers OUT of the temple. He certainly didn't ask them to be on their coins.
-
Good morning Obama Ladies. I'm stepping away from the board for a few days. The back and forth attacks are wearing me out. It's off course of where we started on this. That's just my opinion. I fully believe in each others views and being allowed to state them. But it seems to have escalated into arguments instead of debates. There is a difference. OK..that's just my opinion. But I will be back! Besides...I have to get ready for the big cold blast that's headed our way. The snow has already started. And its not even officially winter yet! Have a great w/e ladies!

PatMom wrote: When they participate in a shadow economy, choose not to learn the language, but still use services, that hurts us all. That doesn't make them horrible people, but it hurts all of us...
I did agree with some of your post, as I also have relatives that came to this country with nothing, and did all the things you stated, working very hard to be successful. And they were sponsored, so had many helping hands to assist them in prospering.
However, I'd like to respond to what I posted here that you wrote. What hurts us all, is not those who participate in this shadow economy--but those that built this shadow economy and keep it going--the businesses and the agricultural businesses. If we did not have this shadow economy of businesses, and people willing to work for them at minimum wage or less, and live in housing provided for them that you and I would not allow our dogs to live in; we would be eating off dirty dishes in restaurants, sleeping in dirty sheets in the budget motels, having to pick our own fruits and vegetables in the fields, and if we couldn't find a job, stand on the corner near the local lumberyard and wait for the local contractor to pull up and offer us a few $$ an hour to come dig the ditches for our foundation for the big house we are building, or clear our backyard for the wonderful landscape we are having put in. These are all the jobs (oh, maybe even more dirty ones we don't want to do or have our children do) that continue to be needing to be done in this shadow economy and I don't see the the government doing much to put a stop to it. As long as our businesses continue to operate shadowily, "those people" will come here to work for us and help us (not hurt us) because goodness knows none of us want to do that ucky work.
I'm going to follow Little-G--winter is coming out here and the rain will be falling soon--lots to do to get ready. Have a great weekend all.

I just can not beleive that BarbDwyer's psot was removed. IT IS UNBELEIVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All of us here because we were hit by BC, that changed our lives. We had to fight , stay tough and continue with our lives. And we did it.
And now we cannot stand to see a post that mentions cliques. It is a sad day and makes me ashamed of my fellow women who had no guts to have an open discussion with BarbDwyer and instead chose an anonymous cowardly way of deleting her post. you know what is the most ironic thing is that you cowards PROVED HER POINT COMPLETELY.
I just wished I had her post saved because I would have reposted it.
-
grace, my brother for one would love to do some of that "ucky" work, and has done it in the past when it's been available. He's been out of work more often than not for the last few years. These are also jobs that used to be done by young people just starting out in the job market to learn how to have a job, without needing to learn a skill first.
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? The shadow economy jobs or the people to fill them? Regardless, it is a vicious circle that hurts us all, and we should be looking for a solution that helps the illegal immigrants who feel compelled to fill those jobs as well as punishes those businesses that increase their profits on the backs of these workers.
-
I am utterly disgusted with what I am reading from so many posters here and on the other thread.
Following grace and Little G out the door for a while...
I'll be back in January as Inauguration Day nears.
Until then, Happy Holidays, Obama ladies!!

UNIONS...the people that gave us WEEKENDS...

Seriously. This thread has gotten so daggone far away from its original intent that it is so not funny. I actually stopped reading the Republican thread right after the election to get away from the silliness and low and behold, it's wormed its way here. Like Donna and Little G, I'm out for a while as well as I have no desire to everybody on "ignore."
But for the record, the "report this post" button was added so the mods, who obviously can't be everywhere at once (but SOMEwhere would be nice, lol) - could have a little help getting rid of OFFENSIVE posts. It takes more than one person for a "removed by the community" deletion to occur (and each poster can only report it once). All the ones on this page and the previous one that were deleted got booted before I saw them (so I can't comment on whether they were offensive to me or not), but it would behoove us all to remember that an opinion that is diffferent from yours isn't necessarily offensive - although being mindful of HOW that opinion is expressed is oh so important as well.
Happy Hannukah/Christmas/Kwanzaa/Solstice/New Year, everyone...
-
I'm with you Felicia....this thread is getting ridiculous. The only one worse than this is the juvenile Repub thread. I'm done here..Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Kwanzaa to all of you.
-
Little-G, Felicia and ivylane, I'm with you. And we were on a roll there for a while . . . important topics, good observations, differing, thoughtful points of view. We're certainly not "of one mind" here.
If anyone's looking for some diversion and inspiration, I highly recommend the movie Milk. Sean Penn is very impressive. The story seems so relevant to today. It's almost deja vu.
Also, for those of you who like Xmas music and/or Melissa Etheridge, I recommend Etheridge's new Xmas album. It's a mix of traditional, rock, blues. Part of the proceeds go to bc research.
Hope everyone is surviving the season so far. We're closing in fast . . . five more weeks to go!
-
Ladies,
Did I hear correctly on the news today that Bush got shoes thrown at him while giving a speech??
Tracey
BTW..... WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Change has arrived!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
LA Phoenix:
I LOVED "Milk" and seriously recommend it to anyone (especially those who NEED it). It received 93% from the critics on my favorite site, "Rotten Tomatoes". What a profound story! I'm light in my historical knowledge and a lot of that happened when I was a child, but wow. Sean Penn did great. Then again, has there ever been a bad Gus Van Sant movie? He is pure genius.
Etheridge is always inspirational. I saw her live this year; absolute magic. I'll have to look up her X-mas one; is it all like religious or more just seasonal?
(You're right, Patmom; I edited it out of respect.)
What's interesting to me, this election, is that I really tried to be respectful and keep my liberal, democratic beliefs to myself, because I find it offensive when others shove their beliefs down my throat. Oddly enough, I found out later that I underestimated many of the people who typically voted conservative, republican but who recognized it really was a time for change. Obama has an enormous job ahead of him, but I think as he surrounds himself with highly educated and diverse advisors and with the support of the US citizens, he could very well "fix" a lot of what is wrong. I'm already campaigning for his next term.

Just a thought as you are celebrating the Iraqi reporter throwing shoes at President Bush, the people (not quite) "protecting" him are the same people "protecting" the PEBO. They are obviously not doing an adequate job since the guy was able to lob a second shoe before he was tackled.
No matter how you feel about Bush's policies, we should not be cheering our President being physically attacked while on foreign soil. If people from other countries don't respect the Office, if not the man, then anyone in that Office will be seen as fair game.
There are nuts out there who have issues with PEBO for a variety of reasons, and who would attack him given half a chance. How would you feel if the Secret Service agents assigned to him hesitated long enough to give someone a second shot at BO? Let's hope that the agents train a bit harder so they will react more quickly the next time someone makes a move against our President, no matter who is filling the Office at the time.
-
justanna, the Etheridge album isn't religious, maybe vaguely spiritual in a couple places. She does a gorgeous rendition of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Many of the songs are originals and political.
Here's a sample of the lyrics, from It's Chrismas Time:
What if we all stopped believing the lie/That happiness comes from a store/What if we look at the damage we've done/And finally shouted no more?
What if we did create peace of earth?/How would we feel about ourselves?/Would we know we were perfect and good and enough for all we desire as well?
What if we all started spreading the news/There's nothing to fear anymore/We are connected, one family of light.
Hallelujah.

I really am going to go, but before I leave, I just had to say: Patmom, have you noticed your post about the shoe throwing has been ignored?
The nature of this thread being what it is (people who actually LIKE the President-elect here to share in the positive, good-natured Obama applause), I'm pretty certain that Tracey wasn't applauding Bush having shoes thrown at him. If you read more than one page a week, you'll notice that Tracey ends all her posts with the "Whoo-Hoo! Change has arrived" thing. She says she is still celebrating Obama's win and the change that will most certainly be ushered in as a result (and thank the good Lord for that!). How dare you or anyone else make her feel badly for that. Who appointed you the moral authority on how anyone else should express him/herself?
It just ticks me off so much that people who in no way, shape or form are even close to being positive about Obama come here, do the "hit and run" post thing and taunt Obama supporters to justify or explain stuff. Either that or we get a lecture about patriotism or how we should or shouldn't feel or react. Really - enough already. This is the "POSITIVE OBAMA THREAD" not the "Let's Debate for the Sake of Debating Thread" for crying out loud...
If what is discussed here bothers you so much, why the heck do you keep coming back?!? For the life of me I don't get that - and that is why, dear friends, I'm taking a break from the craziness. It's sad that it should be too much work to come together and share ideas, but it is.
Can't there be at least one thread on this stupid board where people aren't looking to stir up trouble?!? Damn - is that too much to ask?
I'm out. Enjoy the holidays, friends...
-
Thanks Felicia for coming to my defense. I was on the treadmill and caught the end of the news segment, so I really was unsure if what I thought I heard was correct. I dont wish harm on anyone, not even Bush. And just for the record........ WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YAY OBAMA!!!
Best wishes to all

The post deletions were unfortunate but after looking at it more closely I believe that our sisters on the RR thread thought that jaedeen and BarbDwyer were their male nemesis formerly known as truthseeker, blaest, etc. etc. They zap his posts immediately no matter what they say ... and now I'm pretty sure they were right about BarbDwyer. It's too bad it had to move over here too but he does seem to want to annoy and provoke more than anything else.
I too think we have debated with the Republican viewpoint more than enough already and anybody who wants to continue the debate can always take it over to the other thread instead of them coming here. I'm getting impatient for January 20th ... it's looking good so far so I'm hopeful for the first time in many years.
Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!
First of all, is it really proper for you to be treating me as the subject of conversation in this thread? Maybe you'd like to remind us all what the title of the thread is.
Second, I post as Jaedeen. It is possible that the administrators might have thought that, if any of those other people were using my provider. Were they? I don't know. You mention names I haven't even heard of. You know, there are internet providers who assign proxy ips to their users. Six users could be posting on this site from AOL, all at the same time and with the same IP. Ever heard of spider.proxy.aol.com? It's assigned to an entire region for aol users. Or at least it used to be.
I have been lurking here for years. I only came out of lurking because of threads started by others and allowed by administrators of this site that are political in nature. I thought it was the perfect place to vent about my outrage at my own senator who pretty much told me to go off and die somewhere from my breast cancer. You know: Breast cancer.org + political thread = discussion about research funding denied by a lone senator....yeah, right. You know, Obama, healthcare...yada yada yada...yeah right.
My posts got deleted. Left and right. I had attacked not one single user here. I spoke truthfully and honestly from my heart about an issue dear to me that apparently none of you have been touched by...imagine that!
Maybe the problem isn't mine. I don't think newcomers have much of a prayer on this site, now do they? What is it with this place, anyway? I should think that each and every one of you would have been through enough in your lives that you could act better than this.
And yes, this will probably get deleted too. Even though YOU talked about me on open board, first.
As if having breast cancer wasn't enough...
Oh! And as an early Christmas present to all you friendly, compassionate women out there, I will permanently go back into lurking so you can all give that 'report' button a rest.
Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year. We're all so fortunate that you're such a port in a storm for breast cancer survivors out there. You're all so GOOD at it! And thanks for being so Obamalamapositive and stuff.
Jesus is the reason, right?

WOW Obama says that science will matter in his administration. That will be a refreshing change. He has picked Steven Chu, a Nobel physicist as energy minister. Imagine that!! The mind boggles! Someone who actually knows something about energy and doesn't have any oil or gas fields in a position to offer advice. Yeah I know that Palin was an energy expert and it is too bad that we can't have her knowledge, we'll just have to make do.
-
jaedeen, I didn't get a chance to read your original post on this thread, so can only speculate as to why it was deleted. Although this is a political thread, and we do digress from the topic of Obama frequently, the digressions usually come out of an ongoing conversation about current events. Usually if someone wants to start a discussion on a whole other topic, especially someone who's never posted before, they pose it as a polite question. There's been a history on this thread of people doing "drive by" posting, so if you were vague or angry-sounding in your post, you may have been mistaken for a person with a hostile agenda.
Anyway, are you referring to the jerk from Oklahoma? The one who refused to support a bc research bill that was endorsed by everyone else? There was a thread about him many months ago, when the bill was current, and some of us responded by writing him emails. Since I don't live in OK and don't vote there, however, I'm sure my comments meant squat to him. Have you contacted the Komen Advocacy group? Or the Komen affiliate in OK? If you have a specific beef with him, they would probably be the ones to contact.
-
mke, yeah, ain't it great that science is "in" again! Chu looks fantastic! I'm a little less thrilled with Salazar at Interior. I was hoping for a full-blown progressive in that position, someone like Kennedy, Jr. And he's a Senator, so we'll have to go through yet another replacement process. Not sure about Arne Duncan at Education, either. Opinions on him seem to be all over the place.
But no matter who Obama picks, they've got to be better than what we've been dealing with the last 8 years. There's Cheney admitting that, yes, he authorized and encouraged torture--so what? And Bush admitting that it didn't matter that there were no WMDs--so what? So what if we lied, over and over again. The ends justify the means, and we're liberators, damn it! Those Iraqis are just ingrates, and you Constitution-loving Americans are just idiots. So frigging what?? I guess you gotta give them points for unrivaled hubris. And at least they have the sense to recognize that letting the automakers fail would all but guarantee they'd be consigned to the loser bin of presidential history.
On a more pleasant note . . . heard that Obama/Biden are taking the train to the Inauguration and will be doing events in Delaware and Baltimore. Cool.

Hello Hello to My Obama Girls ---
I am travelling a bit, but logged on to wish you all a wonderful holiday season.
See you in January.
Cheers to all the Obama Girls Here.

Felicia wrote:

Actually, justanna edited her post in response, hours before you posted, maybe that's why you didn't notice it.
you'll notice that Tracey ends all her posts with the "Whoo-Hoo! Change has arrived"
My post was never directed at Tracey.
Who appointed you the moral authority on how anyone else should express him/herself?
Have you asked yourself that question?
It just ticks me off so much that people who in no way, shape or form are even close to being positive about Obama come here, do the "hit and run" post thing and taunt Obama supporters to justify or explain stuff.
This is a public forum, not a private club. EVERY breast cancer survivor has every bit as much right to read these threads and to post on them as you do.
You announced that you were leaving, but on your way out the door, attacked me with falsehoods. Who is the "hit and run" poster?
This is the "POSITIVE OBAMA THREAD" not the "Let's Debate for the Sake of Debating Thread" for crying out loud...
Yes, this is the "POSITIVE OBAMA THREAD", not the "let's bash everyone who isn't one of our clique" thread.
If what is discussed here bothers you so much, why the heck do you keep coming back?!?
Because I find it absolutely fascinating that women who are so kind and helpful, and generous on other threads come here and tear to shreds anyone who they perceive to not be part of their clique. If one of the 'Obama Girls' had mentioned the lack of security surrounding the President possibly endangering PEBO once he is in that position, I suspect she would have gotten a very different reaction from you.
Cliques were not a good thing in middle school, and we are all way past middle school. It is time to grow up, open your mind and your heart, recognize that the election is over, Obama won, so we are all on the same team now, the one that hopes he is a successful President.
I may not be the most ardent Obama supporter on this board, but I recognize, and appreciate that he is making some prudent appointments to his team. I hope that he continues to do as good a job as he steps into the Presidency, and I certainly don't want anything to happen to him.

PatMom,
I am afraid you somewhat misunderstood this thread, it's not just a positive Obama thread it is also bash Bush thread as well

Excerpts from the "Respectfully Republican" thread:
From Shirley:
About the birth certificate..just show the darned thing! Open your records about your health. Release your transcripts from college. I thought this was going to be a "transparent" way of governing. It sure is not starting off that way. When first asked about Blago...no comment. Obama chooses his words very carefully...very, very carefully. He had to think about his comment before giving one. He probably knows his Chicago Buds knew about all of this mess...and Obama certainly could not have known about the workings of the Chicago machine. Geez! How stupid does he think we are. Oh, I forgot...meany people are stupid because the didn't ask questions..NO NEGATIVITY!...and the MSM should be ashamed of themselves! If we can't get truthful news who the heck is going to buy or read their crap. That's why I like Fox News.
From PatMom:
Summer, I agree that including experienced people in the new administration is good and important...but this man became the Democratic Nominee by promising "change", and dismissing Hillary Clinton as part of the old Washington insiders network that needed to be changed. Now that he knocked her out of the way to get to the big prize of the presidency, he is putting her and all of her friends into positions of power. Did something change since this summer? If they are good enough now, why wasn't she good enough this spring and summer? Or is it that women are OK in a subservient role, but not in a lead role?
From SherryG:
Vivre, for soooo many reasons I do not trust PEBO. You have named a few here. I know the dims think we are crazy for being concerned about PEBO's birth certificate but like you said, if he doesn't have something to hide then WHAT is he hiding? (Sherry, you've got to be kidding me with this comment!) If he were on the up and up he would want to clear the air about this issue before he takes office. There are just sooo many questions about this man. Again, I may be cynical but I'm not gullible.
And:
Common sense tells me that if he has good college transcripts he will release them. If he doesn't have health issues he would release his records. If there isn't a problem with his birth certificate he would release it. But hey, we're talking Chicago machine here. He can't help himself.
MSNBC doesn't even begin to know what news is. They are a complete joke. That Rachel Maddow chickie must be smoking crack! $! $$$$
From Rockobermom:
Maybe his birth certificate says he's white.
I could go on, and on, and on. But hey, you guys are all behind PEBHO, you got over the election, you're moving on, you're mature, you don't trash people, you're not negative, you're not cliquish.
You're entitled to your unfettered opinions, and as far as I'm concerned, you don't need to defend any of your remarks. You're conservatives, and that's just fine with me, even though many of your comments annoy the hell out of me. I won't go onto your thread and trash it as the "anti-Obama" thread, even though that's clearly what it's become.
Have a Merry Christmas! Oh, and carry on! ----------------------->
$$$$$

-
Know that I have you on ignore, Patmom, so if anything in you post was directed at me, please don't be too upset if I don't comment, K? Got you there, too, ijl. One of the reasons I don't go to the Repub thread is because there'd probably be nothing but "Post supressed because you are ignoring this member" messages...
What can I say, it works for me...
-
Hey Obama Girls!
Let's not allow them the power (they think they have) to destroy this thread. It is obvious that even though Obama won the election, there are conservatives on this board who are still angry and behaving less like most children I know. They will probably continue their hit and runs, so let's just put those people on ignore and continue to enjoy our great conversations. You are so right Madalyn, we will have much to talk about in January.
And now, how about this--what do you think about Obama asking Rick Warren to give the inaugural induction address? Is this his way of not having to choose between black pastors? Does he hope to win over more of the evangelical crowd by choosing him?
And now Bush wants to try to "fix" some of the problems he created over the past 8 years so Obama doesn't have to deal with a big mess when he gets in office. Not using quotes, but pretty close to the words he used--he uses a small vocabulary, you know!
PatMom wrote: Cliques were not a good thing in middle school, and we are all way past middle school. It is time to grow up, open your mind and your heart, recognize that the election is over, Obama won, so we are all on the same team now, the one that hopes he is a successful President.
It would be lovely if you actually lived by these words, PatMom; and I respectfully request that you post these words on the "respectful" republican thread as a reminder of how you would like to see us "behave," and we would like to see the republican thread people behave. What goes around comes around. Still waiting for the hit and run stuff to stop from your end. Most of us don't even post on your thread--we see the respectful in the title and abide by that.
Adding you to my ignore list. Boy it's growing!

I'm sure, like Huckabee, Warren is a nice enough guy, anti-gay stances notwithstanding. An elderly pro-gay marriage minister, Lowery, is doing the benediction. So there's some attempt at balance. The problem I have with Warren, though, is that he's so much better known than Lowery and is going to overshadow him. If Obama wanted an evangelical, why not pick a more modest one, one not associated with a megachurch? And one not associated with Prop 8? Warren was a bigtime backer. Someone on the radio suggested that Obama give Melissa Etheridge and her spouse, and some other well-known married gay people, prominent places on the stage as well. I think Etheridge is performing, but she should be out there with her spouse too. As Milk said, in Milk, the more people realize we're out there, the harder it will be to discriminate against us.
Solis looks like a good choice for Labor, no? And there's a rumor they might pick an openly gay guy for Secy of Navy. I'm still debating Salazar and Duncan.
I hope if they have an election for Senator in Illinois that Tammy Duckworth runs. She's probably the only Dem out there who could win. She seems like an awesome lady.
