bar- the republican senators doing what you said make me sick. Why didn';t they ask the wall street brokers to take immediate pay cuts. Those republicans hate unions and those republicans are exactly why we need unions. They are so out of touch with americans, particularly middle and lower class folks that it makes me sick.
grace- thanks for also encouring RM to use more respectful terms when discussing human beings.

mke,
Can you please name a program that the government did not screw up ? Surely it's not Medicare or SS. Government bureaucrats have no accountability or responsibility and you will have no recourse.
No I can't think of anything that the US gov. has run, or that any government has run that hasn't had problems or errors. Nor can I think of anything that any company or organization has run that hasn't had problems or errors. I can't think of anything that I have done that couldn't possibly have been done better.
But I do know that through my 3 childbirths, 3 rounds of breastcancer, assorted colds, broken bones and cuts my family and I have walked in, presented our health cards and been treated. No forms to fill out, no approval to be gained.
Look at the statistics. For infant mortality, morbidity, and longevity the US fares worse than most industrialized countries but they spend more per capita than any other country. Time magazine did an article a couple weeks ago on health in the US, you might find it interesting. -
babboob-
JFK may have said "To whom much is given, much is expected," but GOD said it first, through Luke:
Luke 12:48: "...From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."
I laughed when I read your response. Appartently you actually believe that your version of god said that and your bible is an accurate historical depiction of that. That's fine if you do, but don't insult me by expecting me to buy into that mythology.
Regardless, the Bible predates JFK by a number of years (you can look at copyrights). My post was not preaching...I know how you value the "truth" and "facts" over here and wanted to let you know the origin of the phrase.
Glad I made you laugh...everybody needs a smile every now and then. Of course, your attacking my personal religious beliefs is akin to someone attacking your sexual orientation and is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. There are more than enough political facts to dispute--why bother with the personal insults? You believe you were born with your orientation--I believe I was born a child of God....let's leave it at that. Fair enough?

I hate the anti-immigrant...illegal aliens don't belong here chatter. My ex's great-granddad immigrated here from Denmark... illegally ...oops... got married, had a family, worked, got his citizenship and died here.
I think that the anti- illegal immigrant rhetoric makes all people who speak Spanish targets of the cwazy folks who need to hate anyone different from them.
When I was a young woman and working for every cause I could find, including my own, I obviously missed these people who carry on about MY country. I never met them back then..Thank God. This country was originally the home of Native Americans; so who died and left all these angry people spewing so much anger and hate on talk radio. Is it any wonder an Ecuadorian man was jumped by several young American men and killed here a few weeks ago? This angry hateful rhetoric has to GOT TO stop.
-
bar- very well said. I couldn't agree more.

Yeah Obama, Those lying stealing Wall street Bankers??? got what they wanted from Congress, under false pretenses and did what they wanted; they rescued banks. Commerce bank, in the city is now TD bank, with more to come. I don't blame Congress or the auto industry; I blame Wall Street. Even Greenspan was shocked at their dishonesty.
None of us knew Wall street had made IOUs..hmm... I mean, "credit default swaps" the bulwark of our mortgage business. And none of us knew that someone in Congress had allowed Wall street to get rid of the up tick rule, so that Hedge funds gone wild...I love Cranmer...could short, short ,short and crush Any business they went after in an afternoon, with abandon.
And I will not forget how the powers that be manipulated our commodities markets. Remember $145.00 per barrel oil last July..wheat?
Wall Street crooks are the main impetus for our recession, not the auto companies, even if they did keep making SUV's we enjoyed and the mini-vans we drove to cart our kiddos around; they didn't cause this financial collapse.
However, somehow, the Republican senators who have foreign auto companies, with no unions in their states, have decided that those BAD Detroit car companies must die.NOW.
I haven't forgotten, all the wall street machinations, not commented on by the Republicans senators during the 700 dollar Tarp fund hearings.
Not one banker had to present a formal restructuring bail out/loan package, to get one thin dime from Congress; now the Republicans want the Union workers to give up wages/benefits, not in two years at contract's end, but NOW.
BAH Humbug.

You are on a roll, bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glad to have your input.

Ignore me PLEASE. Call me names PLEASE.
I cannot believe what I'm reading here. Hate? You call republicans HATEFUL? This is the most hateful thread I have ever read. I belonged to a totally different kind of forum a few years ago and this thread is as hateful or even more hateful than that one was.
Kennedy was a Catholic so I think he was telling US what the Bible said without quoting it. Back in his day Christians weren't treated like lepers. But we are now. Possibly Kennedy didn't want to quote the Bible since there's this thing about church and state.
Did any of you know that even dems do not want bail outs for the auto industry? It's not only repubs. The poll says one thing, but the dems in Congress and Senate say another. The dems are not voting how the PEOPLE want.
Carry on.

Wonder if we could refer to those you address as "illegal" and "alien" as non-residents or not US citizens? It seems much more humane. After all they are not aliens--they are human beings, and many of them reside on our continent.
I looked at Social Security's website ... the term used is illegal alien, not illegal immigrant. And in looking at the dictionary, the word alien has several meaning ... the 4th one, not 1st has to do with extra-terrestrials. Calling them non residents could refer to ANYONE here -- vacationers, etc. And "not US citizens" well that's going to include the rest of the world.

But back to Obama .... in the news ... Cuba!
Legislators such as Reps. Jo Ann Emerson , R- Mo. , and Rosa DeLauro , D- Conn. , want to pass legislation that would allow all U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba , which would undo prohibitions that the U.S. government has imposed almost continuously since 1962. That embargo prohibits nearly all trade, travel or other types of exchanges with Cuba .
The Bush administration tightened those regulations even further in 2004 by allowing Cuban-Americans to visit the island only once every three years rather than once a year, as previous rules had allowed.
In 2001, the U.S. International Trade Commission estimated that the overall trade embargo cost U.S. exporters up to $1.2 billion a year.
"The ultimate goal is the removal of the entire embargo," said Jake Colvin , the National Foreign Trade Council's vice president on global trade issues. "Engagement furthers American values more than isolation does. We don't do these things to help the Cuban government. We do this for the Cuban people."
Rep. Bill Delahunt , D- Mass. , said that about 50 legislators from both parties supported canceling the travel ban.
Obama doesn't need congressional approval to cancel the 2004 restrictions on Cuban-American travel because they were issued through the Treasury Department . He's also said that he'll unilaterally cancel restrictions that permit authorized travelers to carry only $300 per trip rather than the $3,000 that was allowed previously.
"There will be major changes, there's no doubt," Delahunt said. "President Obama was clear. We want to move in a different direction."
Those who support lifting the travel ban argue that history is on their side. The nearly 50-year-old embargo has failed to promote democracy and freedom, they say, and has even helped Fidel Castro and his brother, Raul, stay in power.
That's good news for us and for them!!

With Bush trying to destroy the environment as feverishly as he can, sneaking in last minute acts to dump waste in streams, remove animals from endangered species lists etc. etc., our environmental secretary is going to have his or her work cut out. I guess he'll announce them before he goes to hawaii for vacation over the holidays. I think Bobby Kennedy Jr. is probably high on the list. I guess we can be fairly certain Bush doesn't believe in reincarnation, because if he has his way there won't be much of a planet for him to come back to.
Did you hear the Obama's asked the Bushes if they could move into the Blair House (the guest quarters of the white house) in early January so the kids could start school with the rest of their classmates. Incoming presidents usually stay at the Blair House before moving in to the white house. Bush said no can do, the house is booked until January 15th, sorry Charlie. They're using it for going away parties... I guess the white house doesn't have adequate room for them. I guess I thought, at least Laura Bush, was empathic to the adjustment that the Sasha and Malia would have to make. I don't see why the Bushes won't accomodate this, for the sake of being nice peopel.

I'd like for just one republican to tell me what I got for my $5,000. It seems I can pay for healthcare in Washington. It seems I can help the poor. It seems I can take care of medical care for veterans. It seems I can help pay for healthcare for the elderly.
AAMOF, it seems I can help pay for everyone's GOVERNMENT healthcare but my own.
And what are breastcancer survivors doing supporting republicans, anyway? Republicans have blocked consideration for research into whether or not the environment gave me this disease. I should think that even a republican would understand that it is self-hatred for a breast cancer survivor to support republicans.
-
Did you know that republicans want you to die?
Can you tell me why my family should lose our home after I die from something I may have gotten from the environment?
-
I heard a few weeks ago Bobby K was slated to head up the EPA ..
Madalyn, my friend's son worked in Wisconsin, I don't know the name of the city but it's near Duluth, MN ... where he worked at General Mills plant. The plant closed and moved to Mexico! The employees were paid a severance package but their package says they can't complain about it going to MX. His mom told me not him.
It's too bad our workers lose out in order for others to get jobs. It's not like they couldn't find workers to fill the jobs ... I guess in a perfect world, they'd have 2 plants ... one for products sold in US and the other plant for product sold in MX ... that way no import export tariffs.

RM- will you do anything to be insensitive to the people on this thread who want to use respectful language for disenfranchised folks. I think it's disrespectful to continue to find an excuse not to use respectful langauge for minorities and the underserved. I really don't get the cognitive dissonance between you wanting to teach your daughter about service and those less fortunate, and your use of prejorative language towards others who are less fortunate or have diseases. I wish I understood that better.
-
You want to pick lettuce when our customer service jobs went overseas?
-
Amy, did you read Madalyn's response? ... it's the common language MOST people use these terms. You're the one who brought it up, who said people don't use the word leper anymore... I only said people do use it, MOST people have not stopped using it. Go back and re-read your introduction of the word. It's not an excuse, it's not laziness, it's what the newspapers use, even liberal ones. Maybe you can stop attacking me.
-
As you can read, RM loves to run from thread to thread--she just loves to share with others what she won't say directly to us!
6 hours ago Rocktobermom wrote:
Illegal alien, Illegal immigrant, ...........I really really cannot believe that a "few" of those ladies really believe that it is wrong to call the the illegal immigrants by those terms!!!! They would have us call them non-residents. Now how does that differentiate the group of people we are referring to? That term could refer to vacationers, ANYONE who doesn't live here. In fact, that term is wrong altogether because they are living here! They are illegal residents!
Tell me, please, why on earth would we change our vocabulary when those around us -- the newspapers, the tv, the government, the people around us use those terms! It was a campaign issue and that was the term!!!!!!
For some reason they think ONLY Republicans use that term. I even put a link up ...showing them that even Democrats use that term!
Oh and lepers, don't say that either....I'm sure if I called someone a Hansen's Disease patient EVERYONE would know what I meant. So, when you read an article about people with that disease in India, and it calls them a leper, I am guessing I should send the journalist a letter and ask him what social circle he travels in because that language is pejorative.

Amy wrote:

Amy: as you can see it did little good! Just because the 'government' and various media continue to use the terms she sees, hears, reads--she intends to continue to do so--even though 2 wrongs don't make a right. So sad. Perhaps she will go back to the other thread. I think they appreciate her more than we do!!
And to others: please remember that the Mexicans did not take away your manufacturing jobs in the US--hello--THE OWNERS OF THE PLANTS THAT YOUR NEIGHBORS WORKED IN TOOK AWAY THE JOBS--they moved them to Mexico because the labor there is "cheap" and they don't have unions. AND the government made it possible by signing trade agreements and giving tax cuts to businesses that took their business to other countries. However, if manufacturing comes back to the US, there will be more people from other countries lining up for a job! On the news last night, a report stated that one of the Japanese car manufacturers is building a big ole plant in a southern state; and was told by the bureaucrats in that state to, "come on down, we don't have unions here, it's a great place and we'd love doing business with ya." Hee-haw.
-
And yes, Amy, I would know what Hansen's disease is--mostly from my growing up years and to date. I would never use the L word. Shame, shame.
-
Felcia,
At the risk of sounding confrontational, I'm just going to ask this: is your goal to be argumentative, ijl? That's what your comments come across as.
Why can't I ask a question ? I did not crticise Obama, did I ? I am totally against bailout. And I actually like the fact that he is not there urging a White house or Senate to provide the bailout. Let's face it althoough Obama is a president elect he does share with us his future plans like a stimilus package for instance .So if he had strongly believed in the Big 3 bailout, he would have said something about giving it a top priority a month from now when he will be an actual president. Instead he is silent on this matter, which I don't neccessarily think is a bad thing.
-
I am a bit late with my comments it has been a busy day for me. But I was outraged today when I heard UAW president on CNBC explaining why they rejected wage cuts.He was asked what he would do if there were a bancrupcy and he was arrogant enough to say "There will be no bancrupcy , it will not be allowed'. And I so mad at Bush .
I mean Wall street is letting hundreds of thousands people go. Here we are talking about a pay cut to save jobs. A number of years ago my company asked employees in certain businesses to take 10% paycut to help prevent layoffs and people were happy do to it. Heck I would do it today to help keep jobs. I used to have retirement benefits and healthcare from the company I've worked for. Last year they told me that I no longer had healthcare, they only kept it for people over 50. And my retirement benefits were frozen. So why should pay for auto workers health and retirement benefits ? I want someone to pay for mine.

What the hell is going on over here?? Wow..everybody take a deep breath!! All we have to do in turn on the TV and get negative crap thrown at us. As Amy suggested many posts back...let's get back on track to some positive thinking!! 39 more days!!!!!!!!! We have a lot of work ahead of us...alot!!! Imagine being Barack and walking into this hornets nest. If he can do that and stay calm, we can back him and stay calm. 39 more days!!! I think it's 39..it's been a long week. I need to go read some positive news somewhere.

I simply cannot believe that I have been a member of this site since 2005 and have made only 26 posts, yet I have had one removed because I simply expressed what I feel to be the truth about republican policy as it relates to curing breast cancer.
Apparently a republican whined. (What else is new.) So I'll say it again, changing one word. Maybe the petticoats won't flip as high over it:
REPUBLICANS WANT ME TO DIE.
Now I can't help it if republicans around here can't handle the truth. Fact is that REPEATEDLY, republicans (who had to have the help of lots of little republicans everywhere to get elected) have voted AGAINST research and funding for curing breast cancer.
How else can they help offset the fact that they raid social security every time they put a big spender in office than to 'help' young people die before they get any of the benefits they have paid in all their adult lives?
Since I can't discuss an issue that is pertinent to breast cancer AND politics on this board without expecting that some roly poly little batfaced girlie is going to go crying to administrators about it, I respectfully request to have my membership from this site removed.
I have breast cancer. If I can't discuss it here, there is no reason to stay.

Jaedeen, nowhere does it say the moderators removed a post of yours or complained to them. I see what you are talking about, it says "removed by the community" ... that means that enough women hit that button, "report this post" and it was removed due to amount of different women hitting the post.
-----
Grace, I do not hide what I say about you, I just was not going to complain about you on this thread. I would if it would do any good. I didn't post it over here because it is not something that any of you would find interesting or agree with ... If I wanted to hide what I say, I would send a pm to friends. I don't come here to CREATE controversy. I will post here to defend myself .. I post regarding many things that I agree with. As Madalyn posted, illegal alien is a common term, used by the majority. Why don't you tackle them? No, cuz its more fun for you two to gang up on me. Other women (proclaimed democrats) have pm'd me "that some of you are sooooo far left that they can't even see you" and they just don't get you two calling me out for this. Just cuz the majority of women are afraid to post it here ... silence doesn't always mean agreement.
Shame shame on you for your attitude.
Thanks for posting my comments over here ... at least now everyone will be sure not to miss it.
And to you ladies who pm'd me .. thanks!
-
Did someone wave a magic wand or did hitting the REPORT THIS POST (duh) button cause a moderator to remove it?
I simply asked to be removed. I don't want to be associated with people who believe that killing me is a good thing.
-
Well I clearly missed something, but hey I have chemo brain so I'm allowed.
There used to be a TV program called "Mork and Mindy" which was mildly amusing. The funniest one I saw was where Mork (who was from a different planet/galaxy) heard that aliens had to register so he went off to get the forms from the post office. The use of the word alien to mean of non earthly origin is relatively recent, my dictionary doesn't even include it. The first definition is "owing allegience to another country, foreign". As I understand it until they become citizens, legal immigrants are resident aliens in the terminology of the US government. There is no insult to the word.
Leper is a bit different as it is also used as a synonym for pariah. But a person with leprosy is a leper, just as a person with diabetes is a diabetic. We don't have a bibical theme of avoiding them though. Actually I gather that Hansen's disease is really not that contagious - we should probably be more wary of consumptives (in every sense of that word).
Sorry for all that, house full of word nerds here. -
I am so disgusted by people who gleefully cheer any action that will hurt Union workers. What will happen to this counrty when the middle class shrinks even more? I lived in Oklahoma in 2002 when they voted for "Right to Work", which is a total misnomer for saying that you can work for a union without paying dues. The Repugs spent millions promoting the concept that Oklahoma would attract so many more jobs if they destroyed the union.
Well, the repugs won. And 5 years later, GM shut down the Oklahoma City assembly plant. The only new business in OKC are minimum wage call centers. That's right - Oklahoma is actually more competitive than India for commodity work.
The economy is in the $hitter right now, and it's only getting worse. Anyone who wishes unemployment or lower wages on blue collar workers, in my opinion, should rot in hell.
peace out.
-
The economy is in the $hitter right now, and it's only getting worse. Anyone who wishes unemployment or lower wages on blue collar workers, in my opinion, should rot in hell.
I also agree with unions BUT they do have faults, too .. like any major big business. If anyone knows, please say .. are the execs part of the union or once you get to upper mgmnt are you out? I am NOT for the huge salaries and bonuses when your company is losing money! I don't know how they get to the $78 per hour because if that were true, the people in Detroit would be rich. So, there is something missing in the picture. Even with a pension, I can't see it being that high.
I am not for outsourcing our companies ... I know that in India, the people there are grateful for the work, actually proud to have these jobs ... they learn English and slang in a special school to qualify for these jobs ... the documentary was very good. But in our economy, I hope Obama puts things right for Americans ... there are so many out of work that people are willing to take minimum wage jobs ... my fear is that unscrupulous business men will take advantage and start lowering the "going rate" for jobs. \
At my work, some people were given crappy offers rather than lay off ... and told, "where you going to go?" .. Well, the owner found out and made it right.
That's the power of unions and there aren't enough of them ... they would prevent this but sometimes they have too many benefits to make it palatable for the owner to accept ... like getting 95% of your wages for a whole year while your laid off .. or problem people, not being able to get rid of them. SF has a union for car dealerships, like many states back east ... so most of the companies left to other cities where they aren't unionized. What is life like? Dealers open 7 days a week and on holidays. Some open til 10pm! Union stores are closed on Sunday and close at 5pm ... but there are few, most have moved across the bay or down the Peninsula.
-
djd,
The economy is in the $hitter right now, and it's only getting worse. Anyone who wishes unemployment or lower wages on blue collar workers, in my opinion, should rot in hell.
So is it OK for white collar workers to lose jobs ? My husband lost job and we have a mortgage and tuition to pay so life is not that rosy for us either. It's a reality of life. And it's unacceptable to me that UAW does not want to agree to some kind of wage cutting to save jobs. I actually wonder whether union members would not prefer to get some wage cuts perhaps temporarily to save jobs for all. I know I would.
Someone on this board not a long time ago was quoting a survey where people were asked whether they would agree to a salary cut to save jobs and a majority said they would.
-
rbm.
I don't know how they get to the $78 per hour because if that were true, the people in Detroit would be rich.
I've read statistics for GM. As it turns out the average hourly wage is very similar between GM and Toyota about $30. But when you add all the retirement and healthcare benefits including those for retirees , Toyota is about $49 and GM is about $69. It's due to a fact that Toyota has far fewer retirees and their retirement benefits are less generous.
