Blue,
Do you have children? It's not our 401K plan that I worry about, it's our kids that this will be affecting. We're going to retire in an ok position because of our 401K. Stock markets come back.
Ok, let us compare. Barney will put us into a spot where we might not be able to defend ourselves too well because we're spread a little thin, so tell our detractors we'll be cutting defense spending. Even the brilliant Biden did the same.
McCain said he'll cut spending on everywhere except military and defense and a couple of others. I then sleep well. He wants to balance the budget, the only way that gets done is by cutting but not where it puts us in national danger, and doesn't leave our troops without the necessary equipment. AND HE'LL STOP THE FOOLISH SPENDING.
With Obama or McCain we will still be in Iraq and Afghanistan, but I want our troops outfitted to fight these wars.
Bush just isn't running this year. I know you want it to be Bush v Obama, but he's going home. Hopefully, both of them are going home.
One more thing. Every democrat on the committee voted against McCain's plan to oversee Freddie and Fannie, everyone of them. It never got out of committee. We wouldn't be in this place if Barney and Maxine and the others did their jobs. Being on the take with campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie worked very well.

blue16 I just want to throw something out there and see what you think. I have been studying this whole deal and researching. People keep blaming the the President for the mess we are in, realizing the "boss" is suppose to be in control. But the way it is, the President has limited control-dictated by Congress.
So I went to US Politics to look at the history of the House, Senate, And President to compare parties with the majority. Clinton's 2nd term 1995-1999 was in office were some of the best years we had economically. I voted for Clinton because of how good things were. Well BOTH seats in Congress were REPUBLICAN.
For the last two years when things have gone to pot the DEMOCRATS have controlled congress.
Since Congress is control of spending, and the democrats are in control of congress, who is to blame for the 10 trillion dollar debt?

Measures of Economic Health
Comparison Among Presidents - 1980-2007
These tables reflect measures of economic health in the United States at the beginning and end of Presidential terms of office. Measurements include per capita income, poverty, federal debt, and federal debt as a percent of GDP.
By any of these measures, the economy was more healthy during the Clinton Administration, which was marked by a Republican Congress and a Democratic Executive.
As these tables show, the total US debt is approaching unsustainable levels. The rapid rise in debt began in the Reagan adminstration. http://uspolitics.about.com//od/usgovernment/l/bl_prez_economic_comparison.htm

Here is how Obama wants to bring our troops home: "we can safely redeploy combat brigades from Iraq at a pace of 1 to 2 brigades a month that would remove them in 16 months" (http://www.barackobama.com/issues/iraq/)
Now I am no military expert, but would you want to be in the last brigade left in Irag? That would be like going to a "gang" fight with ALL your gang members, only to turn around at the last minute to see your are the only one left to fight the other gang ALL BY YOURSELF!
-
R osemary: YEs, I have children and I am sick over whay they and any future children they may have will inherit in terms of national debt. I too don't want to see our troops without being properly outfitted. I am all for spending where needed on that particular front.
Where would you like to see spending cut? Schools? Medical care for our returning vets? Research for diseases? As for Barney Franks, to make a blanket statement that he is responsible for this mess is ludicrous.
Moody: Good post. Although there is enough blame to go around for all of this, I hardly think that a congress in power for the past 2 years can be held accountable for a mess that has been going on for the last 8 years. Much of what congress tries to get passed gets shot down.
-
Moody, Good post, ooops, did you forget the Senate could not get the 60 votes for closure of debate, (stop the fillabuster) because of the 45 Democrats. They would not allow the vote. Hate having little facts jump in the way of a good argument. Did you not notice in your post it passed 11 to 9 out of committee on party line vote. Now what party was it that voted 9. By the way this bill was in requested by evil and dumb Bush who had being trying for years to get Congress to do something about the sub-prime before it collapsed or economy.
-
One more thing about the wars, Obama awhile back gave advance notice to the taliban and al Qaeda that he's sending troops in to Pakistan. You don't tell the enemy our plans in advance. So the call has gone out, come to Pakistan and fight the infidels. They will be laying in wait for our troops. Talk about being naive.
Not only that, Pakistan has resisted our advancing into their Country. They are our allies and we have to respect their wishes. Oh, but don't worry, Obama knows all about how to win wars.
-
Blue,
McCain said, now hear this, he will not cut spending for our troops, national defense and the vets. There is so much corruption in medicare and medicaid, we could save fortunes. Any time we have a gov't run health care program, corruption soon follows. There are plenty of places to cut spending. Our government is the largest of any country. Cutting spending can happen without it being noticed.
I guess you haven't paid any attention to Barney and Maxine and the others who voted down McCain's plan to oversee Freddie and Fannie. If you don't want to blame them and the other dems on the committee, (by the way one of them apologized for what he did), then who do you blame? Bush? He warned something like 13 times that freddie and fannie needed oversight.
Your money is gone, mine took a good hit, and yes Barney and Maxine and all the democrats sitting on that committee did it to us. Let's all reelect them.
-
ibcspouse that wasnt my post that was Madalyns post (just another little fact that jumped out at me)
-
blue16, I do agree that it would seem unreasonable to think congress could do that much damage in two years, so, beings I have no life I went back and too a more thorough look.
When Reagan LEFT Congress was Dem majority
Bush #1 Congress was Dem majority all 4 years
Clintons 1st 4yrs Congress was Dem majority, his last 4 years congress was repub. majority
Bush #2 first 6 years Senate-Dem, House-Rep; Bush last 2 years congress majority- DEMs
-
So, I don't know- I do still suffer from chemo fog, and no doubt if I screwed up someone will be happy to tell me, but IF I am correct then the pattern I see is that when congress has a democratic majority, there is WAY more spending/debt increase.

Subject: THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR RETIREMENT
This is written by a retirement planning expert from Wachovia
Securities, a
professional speaking:
What retirement?
THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR RETIREMENT
For those among you who have more money than you will ever need,
save your time and delete this email.
For the rest of us who are still working with mortgages, children
and grandchildren or retired living on a pension and or Social Security
perhaps you will take a couple of minutes to read the proposed changes
in
the American tax system.
Sharing this email with others can make a difference on November 4,
2008; for our citizens and our country.
INTERESTING DATA JUST RECEIVED ON TAXES
This is something you should be aware of so you don't get
blind-sided. This is really going to catch a lot of families off guard.
It
should make
you worry.
Proposed changes in taxes after 2008 General election:
CAPITAL GAINS TAX
MCCAIN
0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples) McCain does not
propose any change in existing home sales income tax.
OBAMA
28% on profit from ALL home sales
How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit,
you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward
retirement
and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement
community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes.
This
proposal
will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from
their homes as part of their retirement income.
DIVIDEND TAX
MCCAIN 15% (no change)
OBAMA 39.6%
How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock
market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement
accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be
paying
nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama become president. The
experts
predict that higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would
crash
the
stock market yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.
INCOME TAX
MCCAIN (no changes)
Single making 30K - tax $4,500
Single making 50K - tax $12,500
Single making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 60K- tax $9,000
Married making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 125K - tax $31,250
OBAMA
(Reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts)
Single making 30K - tax $8,400
Single making 50K - tax $14,000
Single making 75K - tax $23,250
Married making 60K - tax $16,800
Married making 75K - tax $21,000
Married making 125K - tax $38,750
Under Obama your taxes will more than double! How does this affect
you?
No explanation needed. This is pretty straight forward.
INHERITANCE TAX
MCCAIN 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax)
OBAMA Restore the inheritance tax
How does this affect you? Many families have lost businesses, farms
and ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations
because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their
assets to loved ones will not only lose them to these taxes.
NEW TAXES BEING PROPOSED BY OBAMA
* New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than 2400
square feet
* New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already)
* New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water,
electricity)
* New taxes on retirement accounts and last but not least....
* New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the
same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!!
-
I think we might have to take a copy of Obama's tax plan so we have to use on him later. In his infomercial he talked about the new number is $200K. Yesterday, Richardson of N.M quoted it as $150K. What does he know anyway. Obama's been all over the place with capital gains taxes. Whatever it is, it will be, then it will be something else a little further down the road, as Barney likes to tell us. Forwarned.

NIH Funding 2009 - response after signing a petition to support funding.
Thank you for contacting me about funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
Like you, I strongly support increased funding for scientific research, and I have consistently voted to increase the NIH budget throughout my time in the Senate. I am disappointed that President Bush's budget proposal for Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 requests no increase in funding for the NIH. Such a proposal would make FY 2009 the sixth year in a row that our nation's investment in life-saving research failed to keep up with biomedical inflation. If funding for the NIH remains at the President's requested level, the projected success rate for research grant applications would fall to the lowest level since 1970.
I recently signed a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, requesting that the NIH receive an 8.8 percent funding increase in FY 2009. As a member of the Appropriations Committees, please be assured that I will work to provide increased funding for the NIH and will keep your views in mind as the appropriations process moves forward.
-
Well, let me guess who signed the letter. It must be one of these:

That was a good story Sherri, but did your daughter get through to her friend?

FEDERAL HOUSING ENTERPRISE REGULATORY REFORM ACT OF 2005
The United States Senate
May 25, 2006
Section 16Mr. President, this week Fannie Mae's regulator reported that the company's quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were "illusions deliberately and systematically created" by the company's senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.
The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae's former chief executive officer, OFHEO's report shows that over half of Mr. Raines' compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.
The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator's examination of the company's accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac--known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs--and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO's report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO's report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.
Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation.
Quick Info S. 190 [109th]: Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005
Last Action: Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Ordered to be reported with an amendment in the nature of a substitute favorably. Status: Dead
-
And, you know what I already knew. I knew that McCain co-sponsored the bill. So what? It's status was dead!
I have posted this time and time again. Seems like some don't want to acknowledge it. Read Senator McCain's statement slowly. Read it to the end. The repubs wanted reform of Fannie and Freddie.
Would you like me to give you some linds AGAIN from YouTube so you can hear what the dems said. They were acting like fire was being screamed out and that Fannie and Freddie were doing just fine.
And, even as early as this year Barney said it was basically fine. Did you see the shout out between O'Reilly and Barney..very good! Barney couldn't defend himself very well. I haven't seen O'Reilly this angry in AGES. He's softened up way too much.
We need someone on the right's side.
Did you know that Obama doesn't "mix" very much with the media. He doesn't want to answser questions.
-
I just don't understand why Obama calls people who have succeeded in life and are making a very good living that they are selfish. How dare he say that. He has a brother in Nairobi who makes one dollar a month and family members who live in poverty right here in this country and he doesn't help them. And he wants successful Americans on giving those who have not succeeded to their level. Hannity just said if he can find the address for Obama's brother he'll send him $1,000. He said if Obama would come on his show he'd give Obama's brother $10,000. Now that's what I call charitable.
Will people wake up too late to know what they're getting themselves into? On his infomercial Obama changed that $250,000 to $200,000. And, Biden said $150,000. Then another politician (darn I can't think of his name right now) said $120,000. So, how many times is Obama going to change these numbers?
-
ZOGBY SATURDAY: McCain outpolled Obama 48% to 47% in Friday poll. He is beginning to cut into Obama's lead among independents, is now leading among blue collar voters, has strengthened his lead among investors and among men, and is walloping Obama among NASCAR voters. Joe the Plumber may get his license after all...

has anyone here signed up for teamsarah ?? www.teamsarah.org
you can watch the new Ad that they've created that is airing in some parts of the country - the ad is in response to Obama's wink ad ...

Did anyone go to the snopes link re taxes, etc. Please do, and tell us what you see. I really am interested in the real facts. We sold as much as possible this summer.
My neighbors, part of Hillaryland, have a huge professional annual Halloween display. It's open to the public for one night, drawing so many "trick-or-treaters" that our streets are jammed and they have hired police. I didn't go this time, as we had dozens of kids and teens at the door, who arrived in vanloads......and we were going to a party.
I walked by with the dog and the banner over the driveway reads, "Hell-o-Ween, The Frightening Ride to the White House." There's an Uncle Sam, an elephant with a skeletal ghoul in white rags, and a donkey with a knight in a black cape carrying a sword. I was told that all the political tableaux were very "clever", but the haunted house was too much for the children~~~who do at least get candy.
BOO!
the Evil Queen
-
The snopes cite is not up to date. I didn't see where they gave credit for McCain wanting to lower the capital gains tax to 7.5% for 2 years. I know there are other places where they compare the taxes for both candidates, but I can't remember where it is now. I also heard something about seniors not having to take their money out of their IRA's at a certain age. That was McCain also.
Since the meltdown the candidates have been changing their plans and I don't know if the new plans are on their websites. Anyway it's just a guide because any thing they say will not be held against them once the congress gets their greedy hands on our money.
Someone mentioned today that Clinton ran on the platform of lowering taxes in his second term, but before his inauguration in January he announced he wouldn't be able to keep that promise. McCain having a democratic congress to work with, and they do seem to be licking their chops over our money, how much will he be able to fight off. Just his telling them he'll veto it usually gets them to play nice.
-
Sherri,
If you all live in a battleground State, your daughter will have to work harder on him. Otherwise, it doesn't matter. My son lives in a blue State so his vote isn't worth me arguing with him about it. So we stay off of politics. But I did mail him a picture of McCain & Palin.
Some kids came to my door last evening, and one was wearing a Sarah Palin mask. So I asked him... so that means you'll be voting for Sarah? He said sure, she's a hockey Mom! You gotta love em.
-
Hang in there friends, just a few more days to go and it will all be over!
-
Rosemary - we had one trick or treater wearing an Obama custome and shouting vote for Obama. I was so tempted to give him a copy of my new avatar instead of candy but I figured he is too young to vote so it's not worth it.
-
Having not lived in the U.S. I came to the understanding that I may have a handicap when it comes to the "news". I thought I do not have a grasp on disseminating what is fact or fiction. I desist from news research.
-
Unless of course it is no politics related news
-
What I saw at that snopes link was a page full of a political candidate's links and ads.
I have a new 22-inch HP widescreen monitor, desktop CPU, combo printer/scanner/fax~~~whee!!!!! I'm off and running! Guess where I came first????
Have a lovely day, everyone!
PS: Is there a special way to insert pictures in the text?

Why are Madylyn and Ladysuz on our website? The Obama gals get all irritated if we go over there and leave comments.
Good question, Nancy. The name of our thread is, "The Respectfully Republican Conversation." We happen to be tolerant of other's opinions. We don't purposely chase them away and call them names i.e. trolls. We answer most of their questions. I'm sure we get a bit passionate at times and seem to be harsh. But, this is a "republican" thread. However, on the other thread it's called the Positive Obama thread.
The only difference I can see is one is for Obama and one is for the Republican candidate. However, we don't "own" these threads, thus anyone should be able to post here. We're not afraid of their negative posts. It's not like some some kind of hex will be put on our candidate because they need to vent here. But you notice that the one's who insinuate that we're racist do not post here. I do believe we would be a bit upset if they did. In fact, I challenge them to come over here and talk about how racist we are. Say it to our faces. Don't be chicken.
I realize that over on the other thread they think I'm a trouble maker. I'm not. I'm just as passionate about my candidate and my beliefs as they are. And when they say that we wouldn't know racism if it smacked us in the face...that's insulting AND accuses us of being racist. And,I
I still say that when a person refers to a woman as a vagina it is sexist, insulting, immature, deplorable.........Need I say more? How would one like a man to refer to a woman as a vagina?
