Donna that is awful, but I have told you I hear language like that all the time in Western PA where I grew up. Thank goodness I learned better.
As for the lady who faked the attack. Please don't fault her or any political party. Mental illness is real and a terrible problem for those that have it. It is a proven chemical imbalance in the brain that causes a person to do things that may harm themselves or others. They really don't realize what they are doing. I have lived with someone that had a very terrible mental illness and most people just pick on them or make fun of them. This poor woman has a problem that needs addressed and she cried out for help by faking this attack. Thank goodness she was identified as someone who needed help before she did something really terrible to herself.
-
donna, that's a depressing story, which unfortunately doesn't surprise me. I was waiting for the bus one day and there was this old white guy waiting. A black guy walked by and the white guy said, there's more negros here than there are in africa, they should go back where they came from. I've never personally seen prejudice from younger people, from my own experience it's older folks.
luann- the issue isn't as much about the woman as it is about how the McCain camp jumped on it and tried to use it to their advantage. As for the woman, just because she might have a mental illness doesn't mean she's not responsible for her behavior. There's no chemical imbalance that race baits by saying she was attacked by a black man. I'm not unsympathetic to those with mental illnesses, but I won't absolve someone of responsibility, just because they have a mental illness. Her behavior suggests a personality disorder rather than a chemical imblanced mental illness like bipolar disorder. We don't know that she cried out for help with this attack or if she was simply acting in a histrionic way to get her 15 minutes of fame. People with personality disorders can be particularly sneaky and manipulative. I see nothing in what she did that suggests it was a cry for help. You're right that people with mental illnesses shouldn't be made fun of, but you can't lump everyone with a mental illness into the same category and assume she didn't realize what she was doing. I doubt she has schizophrenia or a psychotic disorder because the planning of her crime was too organized, even though she messed up big by making the backwards B.
-
Amy I will still disagree with you on this. I would bet the media turned this into more of a circus than it should be. Mental illness comes in all shapes and forms. People do very unpredictable things and don't believe they are ill. You treat them with meds and they feel fine, since they feel fine they stop taking their meds and their lives spiral out of control again. It's a vicous cycle. Long story short I am going to defend her with her illness and blame the media for calling this something big before the whole story was out. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
-
I agree that some in the media jumped to conclusions, but the news I watched talked about an alleged attack and the woman says, didn't state it as fact. That's fine to disagree luann, we come to this from different perspectives. I have my doctorate in psychology and have interned inpatient with some of the sickest individuals you could ever imagine. I also worked with some of the most manipulative individuals who had personality (behavior) disorders that weren't as a result of chemical imbalance. As you say, when severely mentally ill patients stop taking meds, their lives spiral out of control, but that's a very small percentage of people with severe major mental illness and not reflective of the entire population. Schizoaffective, schizophrenic and bipolar 1 aren't terrible illnesses, and a small percentage of the mental illness umbrella and there are many more people walking around with personality disorders that are mostly disruptive to others. Depression and/or anxiety wouldn't cause someone to fake a crime against them and psychotic folks are much more disorganized in their thinking and behaving to have planned and executed the hoax.,

Sometimes I almost let myself be hopeful...about this campaign, and I realize it's like my hope for the future in relation to my struggle against breast cancer. Do I dare hope to be disease-free forever? Do I dare hope that Obamam will win this thing big--no supreme court, no hanging chads? When you've been burned in life, it's hard to let yourself be too optimistic. The pain of defeat/struggle/disease is often overwhelming.
But after viewing clips of recent interviews with Palin and McCain, I am almost allowing myself a glimmer of hope for Obama/Biden. Mc & P have no chemistry together. They look flat. You can smell defeat for them. McCain didn't want her, and he's not right-wing enough for her.
If I say we're going to win and win big, am I jinxing everything??? I hold my breath and hope.

Donna-That is a sad story. It's because of the a$$ holes such as your neighbors that we need to be even louder!! The squeaky wheel really does get the grease. If we all be quiet, the sheep will have their way. I'm glad your dad put the sign out for a while, but hopefully tomorrow morning he takes that sign out and puts it on the lawn 24/7 for the next month or so!!! Freedom of speech goes both ways. We can not let their attitudes get in our way! It's exactly what they want!! Their fear factor. Us being afraid of them makes them more powerful and its what they thrive on. They are nothing to fear! They are like the school yard bully's. When you face them, they are more talk than action. Once you stop fearing them, they have lost the power. Doesn't that make sense? We honestly do need to stand up to this, it can't be tolerated. It just can't.
LuAnn-I have to agree with Amy. I don't think this is so much a case of mental illness as it is extreme right conservative illness. I don't know this woman's medical history, but suffice it to say this is the type of people the troll and his side kick have been attracting and it seems to be what they feed off of. It is sad...but maybe if they weren't so racist and angry?
I'm tired of all this. We need to stand up for what is right. No more silence of the lambs!!!!!
-
Anne-Say it out loud because it is happening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Obama IS our next President!!!! You have forward thinking and positive thinking, don't hold it back!!! Don't be quiet about it, the louder the better!! It's going to happen! Let's all stay strong and keep moving forward!!
OBAMA '08...IT IS ALMOST HERE!!!!!!!

Another rat flies off the good ship McTitanic. This time it's one of McCain's actual advisers, Charles Fried:
This week, Fried announced that he has voted for Obama-Biden by absentee ballot. In his letter to Trevor Potter, the General Counsel to the McCain-Palin campaign, he asked that his name be removed from the several campaign-related committees on which he serves. In that letter, he said that chief among the reasons for his decision "is the choice of Sarah Palin at a time of deep national crisis."
Donna, sorry you and your dad had to hear such things. I hope his walking away and putting the sign out even for part of a day sent your neighbor a loud-and-clear message that you're not interested in being his co-conspirators.
Suzfive: Thanks for the offer of your home! I'm going to try to figure out if there's anyway I can make the Big Day!
-
I will politely disagree with you all in regards to mental illness, schzophrenia is a very bad illness and I can't believe you said it isn't Amy. Anyway, we all can believe what we want but I think there are alot of screwed up people in this world and western PA is definitely a very racist area so I can see this event happening out of ignorance and illness. Either way it is a sad event that a person would disfigure themselves over an election. I won't discuss this further as mental illness has personally destroyed my family at one point during my life and I know for fact how dangerous and bad it can be.
Doesn't mean I don't think Obama is going to lose but please let this one rest.
-
I can't believe Im awake and on the computer at 4:00am on my day off! My mind is still foggy. The American Nurses Association and The Illinois Association has sided with Obama. Their reasons are many, but the real focus is on health care
I think the subject of health care goes hand in hand with severe forms of mental illness. Although there are many who live productive lives with MI, there is a group that doesn't. Thats the group I have been exposed to as a nurse and family member. Sadly, this group has also been ignored and many are living as homeless people. During the Bush administration services have been cut for the MI. The idea of getting people out of institutions and back into the community sounded good but it hasn't worked very well. Thats just my 2 cents as I was DON of an ICF for the MI. These were the severe cases who don't do very well. My brother is one of them. If we are going to deinstitutionalize, then we need to invest our efforts into more group homes - cause many - can't live totally on their own. JMO!
The latest of course is Palin given her speech about wanting more research for Autism. Then the big blunder. She criticizes France for studying fruit flies! Funny isnt it that the fruit fly studies are for Autism? I think this is one of the reasons I dislike Palin the most. You would think she would have known this about the fruit flies...dumb move on her part.

Ladysuz: I think they are all running scared over --------------------> The truth is, they have no response to our reasoning, All I see is the same "Rush Limbaugh" talking points being spewed out ad nauseum....it's repetetive and boring. Everyday someone over there comes out with some cut and paste article from a right wig rag that suits their argument.
Someone on the other board posted that the democratic state lawmakers of the last two years caused this economic meltdown. Hmmm...what was it that I read abot the repubs paying off FANNIE MAE???? Makes sick.
Hey, how about "Joe the Hothead", McSame's brother calling 911 in VA becuse he was stuck in traffic. What a dope. Someone ELSE in the McSame family also needs anger management. that family.
10 more days.....
-
luann- I said schizophrenia was a terrible illness, but that most of the other mental illnesses are npt nearly as bad. Sorry for the confusion.
AnneW- I know what you mean about being afraid to be too hopeful about Obama and other things, we're trying to protect ourselves from being too disappointed, I think/.
little g-I don't think the woman's behavior was as a result of conservatism as much as her desire for attention. I can see the same thing happen if she was for Obama, although Obama would react more prudently and not call the tv stations to make it a news story. The McCain campaign is just one big blunder.
nicki- I laughed so hard at the fruitfly thing too. The woman is a few sandwiches short of a picnic. She doesn't mention her 2 million dollars in earmarks for alaska to study some insect's mating habits.
suz- I'd love to talk to your daughter. Does she want to do the Phd or PsyD route? Hopefully she's out there volunteering in MH to get some experiencer to set her apart from other applicants because it's getting harder and harder to get into doctoral programs. I have a friend who's in a PsyD program and she did get in after undergrad. She worked for a year in the field beforehand. She's coming to see me in a few weeks and I'll pump her for info for your daughter. I can ask her to bring some brochures too.
suz- best to ignore those who can't hold intelligent conversations, why waste your energy and bang your head against a brick wall when she doesn't matter one bit.
blue- I agree with running scared. The scareder they are, the meaner they get. How can one even hold a conversation with people who take Rush and Bill O. as news.
Joe the hothead embarrassing brother was too funny. You can't make this stuff up. I visited the lizzie borden house a few weeks ago and got a pin that said, "everything I need to know I learned from the lizzie borden school of anger management." Maybe we need one for the McCains, "everything I learned about losing an election I learned from the McCain school of anger management."

Ladysuz: Oops! My bad. It was late when I posted. I do have trouble sometimes remembering people's screen names and who wrote what when. I don't use my real name, Amy, for that reason. I figure it would really confuse folks to have two Amys on this thread.
The Barack-o-lanterns are great!
We have explained at length why we're supporting Obama. I know I have. And it isn't just about his speeches. Or his temperment, although I think both are important. We've discussed his tax policy, his healthcare plan, his foreign policy, etc. What more can we say?
Yeah, the fruit fly comment was a classic. Of all the earmarks she could have complained about, she chooses the one that's going to make her look like a fool. I read a story today about a scotch tape x-ray study. It could very well lead to a new treatment for cancer. You never know where valuable discoveries are going to come from -- fruit flies, scotch tape, bear DNA . . .
Early voting looks good for Obama. It's amazing to see so many people participating enthusiastically in the process. And I don't think it's just about voting against Bush; Obama has really energized and inspired folks, especially young people. A new day is dawning, soon!
-
And to add............
How about her "freudian slip" during the interview, when Palin responded "Tasergate?" Oops! Wonder if the lawyers saw this before or after her deposition on Friday!
As far as the clothing wardrobe--if she can dress so well at thrift shops, why didn't they go to marshalls or ross to get her wardrobe? A step up from the thrift stores!
I love what Michelle wears during this campaign. She has a lot of style, and I bet she dresses as well or better than Palin on a much smaller budget!! The RNC is obviously showing their real objective--to spend more $$ and blame the deficit on the Dems. Something wrong with this picture! Think the RNC is more elitist than they really want us to see that they are. Don't think they were expecting there would be so much flack about this.
And I resent the comment Palin made about giviing them to charity--the value of those clothes depreciated by about 80% once the tags were cut off and she wore them. Haven't we all seen how inexpensive clothes are in thrift shops? And who would pay a lot for items from her wardrobe at auction? Maybe some republicans, who would be paying for them 2x--since they came from the RNC.
As for the repetiveness of being asked to explain again and again as to why we want Obama and not McSame--probably doesn't like our answers, and like the old time teachers in school, keeps hoping if one keeps asking the question again and again, we'll eventually give the right's(you know------------------>over there) answer. must frustrate to keep getting the same answer--you can see it in the continued request for the same question, and perhaps a little anger mixed in!!
I voted on Friday, and most of my family has also. Praying Obama will be victorious!
Oh, my sister and bil are visiting from Colorado. He is very conservative (although not the religious type at all) so I wanted to ask him what he thought of Palin, cuz I know he is voting Republican. He thinks she is okay, and a smart woman, and he's fine with her possibly becoming president if the worst were to happen. This is a very intelligent, retired engineer. Was rather disappointed that he thought McCain made a good choice. I thought he was smarter than that--but perhaps since he was raised during the Depression and most of his retirement is in stocks (and he told me this recession and market downturn doesn't really affect them much) he wants to keep the Reps in office so he can continue to get richer!! Anyway, we did have a good discussion about race, and he listened to what I was saying, and although I know I will never change his mind, I did give him something to think about when he claimed that we all had equal opportunities and that we all could succeed like he did w/out any govt assistance (he never used the GI bill or bought his homes through Veteran Housing option). At least, I got him to realize that not all opportunities in this country are equal. Funny, when he told my sister that we were calmly discussion the gray areas, I corrected him and said, no we were talking about what's black and white. Got a good laugh from him on that. I just wanted to understand what the attraction is about Palin, and I was disappointed in the answer from someone whom I consider to be well educated and reads the Wall St Journal. Kind of left me scratching my head. Didn't expect him to "like" her, but thought he would vote Rep because he thinks McCain would be better than Obama.
He gave me the same Faux news "arguments" about Obama. Stated the same old stuff that we've been hearing for months that was dealt with during the primaries. I think the other side has simply run out of anything else to say. They throw stuff out there, and it just isn't going to stick.
-
I'm still trying to figure out why the other side thinks that we have to refute everything they post. Why refute stuff from fox, worldnetdaily, wash times, and so on -- all with a proven bias and aren't worthy of any time spent on analysis?
I am so looking forward to Nov 4th and I can't wait til the 5th. The past 2 post-election days have been (sob) awful...we had some difficult days at work. This one though, promises to be a joy. Working for a major gov't contractor, we know that we'll have tough times no matter who is elected, but we are so pumped to have Obama to work with.
-
Ladies,
I agree completely about folks from "the other side" constinually demanding to know why we support Obama. It's the only smart thing to do, duh!! I guess in their missionary-like zeal they are trying to save our political souls.
Cherryl
-
Okay, let's try this.
What has Obama accomplished?
-
Certain people on the other side seem to be petty and looking for an argument rather than information. Their minds are closed to unbiased facts and they whine like spoiled children saying why can't i have that new toy, why can't i stay up late for bedtime, why do i have to go to school. You can lead a horse (or a pig) to water, but you can't make her drink. I want to know why McCain acts like he gets a pass because he was a POW or why that makes him a self define expert in that area. I heard him say today that Obama will be tested, but he's going to be the one doing the testing. Does that mean he's already got his war strategy ready for Jan 21st after the inaguration parties? Is he planning his own version of 911 for countriest that he doesn't like? Whatever happened with talk softly and carry a big stick?
I rolled by eyes at her attempt to rename troopergate tasergate. Sorry Sarah, just because you say something is true, doesn't make it so and most of the country is on to you and we're not dumb enough to believe you were cleared of ethics violations just because you won'/t be prosecuted. Ethics violations that don't rise to crimes are still ethics violations.
suz- I've never known anyone who went to school in canada (from the USA) will licensing be an issue? I finally decided to get rid of most of my text books after I moved back into my apartment. For the longest time I kept them, thinking they'd be of use some day but when moving back I decided to minimalize. I kept a few that I used for you dissertation and because new editions wouldn't make them obsolete. BTW, I always say the definition of insanity is repeatedly banging your head against a brick wall and wondering why it doesn't feel like a pillow
.
On Bill Maher last night they were talking about how the republican party used to be decent before the religious zealots dug their teeth into it. They said there used to be political discourse based on issues who was for big government and who was for smaller government, etc, but there wasn't the rancor and hatefulness that exists today and so much gridlock. I do think that the Jerry Falwells made the party meaner as a whole and more divisive in the country. A news show, I forget which one, was talking about where the republican party goes from here, since Palin's nomination seemed to be the breaking point which caused the so many high ranking republicans to stray to Obama. I would love to see that party get less mean/race baiting-- more like shokk so that there's more respect to agree to disagree.
-
Pam, I apologize if I sounded snotty. I've been posting on this thread from the beginning and from the beginning, my and others' comments have been challenged and demeaned. The tone has often been aggressive or dismissive. I know some Obama supporters have posted on the other thread, but I've never posted there and I'm not interested in arguing with people. I thought that was the objective of this particular thread -- to be a place where like-minded Obama supporters, who also happen to be bc survivors, could chat, share observations about the election and get to know one another. Not to be a forum for heated political exchanges (there have always been other threads for that). But my frustration is no excuse for being abrupt, so I apologize.
-
Okay Madalyn; that was hysterical! I hope it makes an impact!
Anna
-
Well, I did it! I voted today. I knew I couldn't wear my Obama T-shirt when going to the polls, so I wore my "I'm part of the vast left wing conspiracy" T-shirt that I bought from the Daily Kos site in 2006. The old lady who signed me in looked at it and did a double take but she didn't say anything.
It was kind of depressing to see the a million McCain signs (and one very lonely Obama sign) around the perimeter of the polling place, but I reminded myself that signs aren't votes.
-
Madayln that you for the best belly laugh I have had in along time.
Nicki
-
I saw that on tv last night mad! It's great.
djd- call your local obama office and let them know what you saw. They might be able to do something to beef up visibility or get a greeter there. I did that during the primaries and they were right on it. About the Obama shirt, do you think they would have said anything if you had it on or if you had an open cardigan over it? I finally washed my shirt, it was about to grow feet and throw itself into the washing machine.
-
Great video. I thought the nose-hair plucking was particularly brave of him!
Here's this week's "best of" late-night political humor. The Craig Ferguson bit at the end is hysterical.

Congrats on voting Donna and for proudly displaying your left-wingedness. I still haven't figured out if political teeshirts are permissable inside the polls in CA. It's not explicitly covered in the handbook. I guess I better learn quick since I'm supposed to be enforcing the rules on Nov 4th.

Palin 'Going Rogue,' McCain Aide Says
Please...even her own side can't stand her. Enough said.
-
So good to see Barack today!!!! I'm sure this is so hard on him. We are ahead and he's moving forward, just like all of us are!!!! WE WILL WIN!!
OBAMA '08...its almost here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Amy - that's a great idea. I'll call or email them immediately.
Shirley - One thing that Obama has done more impressively than any presdiential candidate in recent history, is he has run his campaign like a finely tuned machine. He has stayed on message, he has stayed clean, and he has campaigned in EVERY state - not just the swing states. Last few elections before this, I could count on one hand the number of campaign commercials I saw in Texas. But when I was in New Mexico on business, it was one ad after another. Obama is getting his message to every voter - not just the ones in a couple of states. I have seen a single McCain ad on television since September, but I have seen Obama ads every day. And it makes me proud to have contributed a few dollars to his campaign.
-
Has anyone heard how his grandmother is doing? I assume since his sister was the one who called and told him to come that she's staying with Toot.
-
Donna...the Obama campaign has purchased most if not all commercial spots. That is why you havn't seen many troll ads. Thank goodness for that!
Amy..last I read she is not expected to make it to election day. She broke her hip and has a heart condition. I can't imagine how proud she must be of Barack!!!! What a great man she helped raise! You just never know, do you? I just feel so bad for Barack. But he's so together thru all of this, and it's probably one of the most difficult times in life. Anyone on the fence should look at that all by itself. The troll can't control himself under normal circumstances. Let's just all send our positive energy over to Barack.
