ACRON just gathers the names, its not their job to verify them. That's the governments job. That is what is so stupid about him bringing it up over and over again. However..he is senile and this is what he does.
Just a reminder for any states that have early mail in ballots....if you live in one, get them out as quick as possible!!! This gives the volunteers and organizers more time to concentrate on last min. votes. GET THEM IN!!!! The next few weeks are no time to loose steam!!!!!
OBAMA '08...IT IS ALMOST HERE!!!!!!! :-)

Ya know, I thought I made a post here yesterday and I cant find it. Probably hit the wrong button. I was commenting about how strongly I feel regarding McCains age. He is not at the beginning of his career, he is at the end. Not a place where our next president should be.
Should a 72 y/o cop be chasing a killer, a fireman rescuing people from a fire, or a 72 y/o nurse working in ICU or the emergency room? If Im having a cardiac arrest, I sure dont want that 72 y/o nurse taking care of me. Many jobs require mandatory retirement at age 65. Why dont we do the same things for the President?
When I watch McCain, I can hear see he losing his train of thought, he slurrs his words at times, and when he gets angry - Im fearful he will have a stroke right in front of us. This is a major concern for me. Although there are many older people who live very active lives - they would have a hard time dealing with the adrenalin rush that goes along with working in emergency situations. The are one step away from a medical incident!
I thought McCain looked frail, angry, and acted like a crybaby during those debates. Not someone I want for president. So that brings me back to my second fear. Is Sarah Palin ready to be president of the United States? I think not.
I posted this video once before, and Im think its important to see again. Its the Witchcraft video! This is not who I want a Vice-president, or God forbid President of the USA.

Denisa...Beautifully put!! Your post should be posted all over the place as I think it really sums it all up! We are getting so close!!! So, let's keep the momentum going!! We need to stay positive and loud!! Do whatever you cani in your own community and just spread the word. We can't afford any back tracking, or any loop holes where the troll can try and manipulate the polls. It will be President Obama!!! We're closing in on the days....Obama '08..it's almost here!!!!!!

I like the idea of celebrating in the streets on the 5th Of November with flags and banners reading "We have overcome!" I live in a very rural area so have offered to drive some of the 18 and 19 year old neighbors to the polls. They are very intimidated by the voting process and do not know how it is done...so I will walk them through it ...along with the difference between a GOP and a DFL vote...quite simply "the rebublicans favor spending on war, the democrats favor spending on your higher education." Maybe I am being a little too biased...they do know I am a flaming liberal though? But the 4th is my birthday so I figure I get to take some liberties and hopefully get the best birthday present ever...President Obama.
Oh, I also got one of those robovoice messages (illegal in my state) on the phone stating Obama was associating with known terrorists and I needed to know that...full text is on CNN. It was very disturbing and felt like a "terroristic" call in itself. I did report it!
-
that is awful, who is doing that?
-
Denisa and Nic,. great points. I honestly think McCain wants to be president because he wants to be president, not country first thast he's the only person for the job. It's been an ambition of his for a while. With Obama, he got into the race because people kept asking him to run. I'm not saying he doesn't want to be president, just that Obama was basically drafted to run because people who got to know him, saw in him what millions are seeing. After Bush, Obama is the best one for the job,. there's a lot of undoing that needs to take place.
-
cjh- did you report the robocall to anyone? That would piss me off- I'd call the state bureau of elections or something. What you're doing for the democratic process is great. I just have a cell but i'd report the number just to vent from being so angry- though cells usuallhy don't get robo calls.
-
Yes I did to the organization below...they then forward it to the State Attorney General (in MN and CA this is illegal) and media. It is sponsored and paid for by McCain/Palin Campaign and the RNC I saved the message too...

Here is the robocall that was heard around the country.
"You need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans. And Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington. Barack Obama and his democratic allies lack the judgment to lead our country."
I sure hope this one backfires!
-
cjh....I think it already has!! What a pack of blind sighted morons. The only one's believing this crap is his flock. His anger is so apparent. Did you see the SNL skit last night on the last debate? They really slammed the troll and his obvious senility. And they slammed that woman that got up in his convention saying Barack is an Arab (as if that would be a bad thing). Don't worry about this crap, but I would however report it if you get one! They are reaching, but unable to get hold of anything. Their true color's get more obvious by the minute!
-
I heard that David Letterman asked McCain about his relationship with Gordon Liddy on his show last night. Wish I would have seen it because Letterman pounded him about Palin.
Denisa: Yes! We are thinking alike. Your post was great.
cj: What an awful message for anyone to receive. This is exactly the kind of thing I don't like. I had lunch at one of the hospitals I visited today. They had a large screen TV and O'bama was giving a speech, I think in Virigina. The whole cafeteria was quiet. People were listening and cheering. It was great. He looked so Presidential and he presents his issues clearly.
Amy: You are so right, it is so clear that Obama is the best person for this position.
LuAnn: You are such a brave person. That post you wrote on the repug thread was great. You were saying everything I was thinking. Hope my spelling is good and my sentences are in the right context.

Wow! The Chicago Tribune, a diehard conservative newspaper, is endorsing Obama. It's the FIRST time in the paper's history for them to endorse a Democratic nominee:
*******
This endorsement makes some history for the Chicago Tribune. This is the first time the newspaper has endorsed the Democratic Party's nominee for president....
The Republican Party, the party of limited government, has lost its way. The government ran a $237 billion surplus in 2000, the year before Bush took office -- and recorded a $455 billion deficit in 2008. The Republicans lost control of the U.S. House and Senate in 2006 because, as we said at the time, they gave the nation rampant spending and Capitol Hill corruption. They abandoned their principles. They paid the price.
We might have counted on John McCain to correct his party's course. We like McCain. We endorsed him in the Republican primary in Illinois. In part because of his persuasion and resolve, the U.S. stands to win an unconditional victory in Iraq.
It is, though, hard to figure John McCain these days. He argued that President Bush's tax cuts were fiscally irresponsible, but he now supports them. He promises a balanced budget by the end of his first term, but his tax cut plan would add an estimated $4.2 trillion in debt over 10 years. He has responded to the economic crisis with an angry, populist message and a misguided, $300 billion proposal to buy up bad mortgages.
McCain failed in his most important executive decision. Give him credit for choosing a female running mate--but he passed up any number of supremely qualified Republican women who could have served. Having called Obama not ready to lead, McCain chose Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. His campaign has tried to stage-manage Palin's exposure to the public. But it's clear she is not prepared to step in at a moment's notice and serve as president. McCain put his campaign before his country....
Obama is deeply grounded in the best aspirations of this country, and we need to return to those aspirations. He has had the character and the will to achieve great things despite the obstacles that he faced as an unprivileged black man in the U.S.
He has risen with his honor, grace and civility intact. He has the intelligence to understand the grave economic and national security risks that face us, to listen to good advice and make careful decisions.
When Obama said at the 2004 Democratic Convention that we weren't a nation of red states and blue states, he spoke of union the way Abraham Lincoln did. -
Wow, that editorial is bringing a tear to my eye. My parents and grandparents were Republicans. My parents voted for LBJ in 1964 because they couldn't go for Goldwater. I think this is a similar "sea-change" moment for many.
Hope to be celebrating on November 5!
-
You all need to help me, I'm not intelligent enough to answer all the questions being thrown at me on the other thread but I sure am giving it a run for my money. I don't want to stir up trouble but I had to speak my mind on the repub thread. I invite any of you to have conversations with me but please keep it very respectful. Afterall we are all sisters in bc. But if you all take a peek you can let me know how well I am doing so far!
-
dj- thanks for posting the editorial. The only part I question is giving him credit for selecting a female candidate for VP-- because if he had chosen any of the qualified women, that would be true, instead he made a mockery out of chosing a token woman.
-
LuAnn,
You are doing one hell of a job on the other "side." You are far braver than I. It is almost impossible to have a civil conversation with people who aren't open to seeing any viewpoint but their own. Don't raise your blood pressure over this. You have love and support here. You have nothing to prove to anyone.
Cherryl
-
I'm not raising my blood pressure am actually enjoying it. I like finding the info to prove people wrong. The nice part is everyone knows I'm not mean spirited so they are willing to talk civilly with me. I just ask that we keep our conversations on point and not nasty about the candidates families that way I can honestly say we all are playing fair and by the rules.
-
LuAnn,
I commend you for trying to bring a voice of reason to the other thread. I don't have the patience and tenacity to remain civil in the face of so many lies. Many of them seem to get their "news' from unreliable and notoriously untruthful sources, it seems. Generally, I have responded only against the most vile and inane comments, but I have been tempted many times to respond to some of the day to day *cough* information being posted. But the few people who are on that thread are a very tiny percentage of the sisters on this board, and I think that's consistent with Bush's record-low popularity (23% of the country, I think, still thinks Bush is a good president).
So, I look at it this way - there is a percentage of the population that, despite all the evidence to the contrary, stubbornly cling to their belief and will never change their minds - no matter what!
As long as you find it entertaining, keep posting over there - I'll always follow your posts, but I rarely have the stomach to engage in those discussions.

Amy, Since you live in Philly, this one's for you:

In Philly, Conservative Talk Radio Host Backs Obama
October 17, 2008 3:44 PM
On his talk show on WPHT today, conservative Philadelphian Michael Smerconish endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.
Smerconish did so by reading a couple paragraphs from his pending op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
"I've decided," he said. "My conclusion comes after reading the candidates' memoirs and campaign platforms, attending both party conventions, interviewing both men multiple times, and watching all primary and general election debates.
"John McCain is an honorable man who has served his country well. But he will not get my vote. For the first time since registering as a Republican 28 years ago, I'm voting for a Democrat for president."I may have been an appointee in the George H.W. Bush administration, and master of ceremonies for George W. Bush in 2004, but last Saturday I stood amidst the crowd at an Obama event in North Philadelphia," says the Republican.
Smerconish has given us some more from his op-ed:
"Terrorism. The candidates disagree as to where to prosecute the war against Islamic fundamentalists. Barack Obama is correct in saying the front line in that battle is not Iraq, it's the Afghan-Pakistan border. Osama bin Laden crossed that border from Tora Bora in December 2001, and we stopped pursuit. The Bush administration outsourced the hunt for bin Laden and, instead, invaded Iraq.
"No one in Iraq caused the death of 3,000 Americans on 9/11. Our invasion was based on a false predicate, so we have no business being there, regardless of whether the surge is working. Our focus must be the tribal-ruled FATA region in Pakistan. Only recently has our military engaged al-Qaeda there in operations that mirror those Obama was ridiculed for recommending in August 2007.
"Last spring, Obama told me, 'It's not that I was opposed to war [in Iraq]. It's that I felt we had a war that we had not finished.' Even Sen. Joe Lieberman conceded to me just last Friday that 'the headquarters of our opposition, our enemies today,' is the FATA."Smerconish is taking a lot of heat from his fellow GOPers, as one might imagine.

I used to dislike Smerconish. I never listened to his radio show (obvioiusly) but he often gave commentary and was a panelist on a local news/opinion show. Since he's been on MSNBC I've been pleasantly surprised that while he maintains his conservative views, he's able to be unbiased about both McCain and Obama. I had a feeling he was leaning toward Obama recently, but I didn't think he'd actually endorse him.
Powell is set to endorse Obama on meet the press Sunday. I know i'll be tuning in.
Luann, I normally would go over and support you, but I have no desire to see any of that negativity. There are too many toxic names I see on last post. Obama talked about the owner of a diner where he ate who was a die hard republican who's business was languishing because of the economy. Obama asked who has been in power over the last 8 years. The man said republicans. Obama said, if you bang you head against a wall long enough and it starts to hurt after a while, don't you stop? I give you a lot of credit for trying to reason with the disrespect and what I assume is high prejudice based on at least one of the posters. Some people will not change and open their hearts to diversity.
Should we prevail on November 5th- I do think as individuals we need to hold out the olive branch. I remember after the election was stolen from Gore in 2000, when gay marriage and hatred for gays was used to get out the republican vote (or was that 2004). I wanted nothing more than for the republicans to reach out to democrats and include us in the America they invisioned.
-
O4P...we WILL prevail on Nov. 5TH!! There is no "should" in there. And I agree, we will hold out the olive branch. We are really all in this together. Just because some can't see thru what's been put in front of them for so many years, well, by being agry at them, or turning on them would make us no better than what we are moving away from. Home stretch....Obama '08..it's almost here!

Right-wing pundits are falling like dominos against McCain-Palin. Peggy Noonan, a speechwriter for Reagan, writes in the Wall Street Journal:
***********
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122419210832542317.html
...
There has never been a second's debate among liberals, to use an old-fashioned word that may yet return to vogue, over Mrs. Palin: She was a dope and unqualified from the start. Conservatives and Republicans, on the other hand, continue to battle it out: Was her choice a success or a disaster? And if one holds negative views, should one say so? For conservatives in general, but certainly for writers, the answer is a variation on Edmund Burke: You owe your readers not your industry only but your judgment, and you betray instead of serve them if you sacrifice it to what may or may not be their opinion.
Here is a fact of life that is also a fact of politics: You have to hold open the possibility of magic. People can come from nowhere, with modest backgrounds and short résumés, and yet be individuals of real gifts, gifts that had previously been unseen, that had been gleaming quietly under a bushel, and are suddenly revealed. Mrs. Palin came, essentially, from nowhere. But there was a man who came from nowhere, the seeming tool of a political machine, a tidy, narrow, unsophisticated senator appointed to high office and then thrust into power by a careless Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose vanity told him he would live forever. And yet that limited little man was Harry S. Truman. Of the Marshall Plan, of containment. Little Harry was big. He had magic. You have to give people time to show what they have. Because maybe they have magic too.
But we have seen Mrs. Palin on the national stage for seven weeks now, and there is little sign that she has the tools, the equipment, the knowledge or the philosophical grounding one hopes for, and expects, in a holder of high office. She is a person of great ambition, but the question remains: What is the purpose of the ambition? She wants to rise, but what for? For seven weeks I've listened to her, trying to understand if she is Bushian or Reaganite-a spender, to speak briefly, whose political decisions seem untethered to a political philosophy, and whose foreign policy is shaped by a certain emotionalism, or a conservative whose principles are rooted in philosophy, and whose foreign policy leans more toward what might be called romantic realism, and that is speak truth, know America, be America, move diplomatically, respect public opinion, and move within an awareness and appreciation of reality.
But it's unclear whether she is Bushian or Reaganite. She doesn't think aloud. She just . . . says things.
Her supporters accuse her critics of snobbery: Maybe she's not a big "egghead" but she has brilliant instincts and inner toughness. But what instincts? "I'm Joe Six-Pack"? She does not speak seriously but attempts to excite sensation-"palling around with terrorists." If the Ayers case is a serious issue, treat it seriously. She is not as thoughtful or persuasive as Joe the Plumber, who in an extended cable interview Thursday made a better case for the Republican ticket than the Republican ticket has made. In the past two weeks she has spent her time throwing out tinny lines to crowds she doesn't, really, understand. This is not a leader, this is a follower, and she follows what she imagines is the base, which is in fact a vast and broken-hearted thing whose pain she cannot, actually, imagine. She could reinspire and reinspirit; she chooses merely to excite. She doesn't seem to understand the implications of her own thoughts.
No news conferences? Interviews now only with friendly journalists? You can't be president or vice president and govern in that style, as a sequestered figure. This has been Mr. Bush's style the past few years, and see where it got us. You must address America in its entirety, not as a sliver or a series of slivers but as a full and whole entity, a great nation trying to hold together. When you don't, when you play only to your little piece, you contribute to its fracturing.
In the end the Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It's no good, not for conservatism and not for the country. And yes, it is a mark against John McCain, against his judgment and idealism.
I gather this week from conservative publications that those whose thoughts lead them to criticism in this area are to be shunned, and accused of the lowest motives. In one now-famous case, Christopher Buckley was shooed from the great magazine his father invented. In all this, the conservative intelligentsia are doing what they have done for five years. They bitterly attacked those who came to stand against the Bush administration. This was destructive. If they had stood for conservative principle and the full expression of views, instead of attempting to silence those who opposed mere party, their movement, and the party, would be in a better, and healthier, position.
At any rate, come and get me, copper.
-
Ladysuz...the photo's gave me goosebumps!!! RIGHT ON MOM!! :-) We seen Barack when he came to Portland, before he made it to this stage..it was an awesome powerful presence he had. 75,000 people turned out to see him! Some had to sit in the streets and just listen, because there was no room to get in. This is great! I am so glad you and your mom got to go! Thanks for sharing that!
DJD..thanks for all the great info you've been giving us!! It helps me to spread the word!

Lu Ann,
I attempt to post and engage the discussion on the other thread. They don't want to hear from me. Not sure why, except that at one point I tried to explain that just saying you aren't a racist doesn't make it so (got that from my African American friends). So, I give you great big kudos for sticking it out over there. Other posters here are right. They seem to have so much prejudice and anger that seems to be misplaced; and they keep bringing up the same old lies over and over again. No matter how much is explained to show that the lies are not the truth--but a fabrication of pulling out one small thing from a sentence or paragraph or speech, and claiming it means something else. I give up. But I do enjoy going over there to see what they've come up with next.
I'm waiting for Rachel Maddow to come on (here in CA at 8 pm) as there was a leader for discussion McCain's involvement with the voter fraud scheme that is occurring in Ohio. Evidently, this also happened in 2006. The word is (and I am going to watch and then post what I learn) is that McCain was involved in 2004 & 2006 in the attempt to declare voters ineligible to vote in several states and that this was another way for the Republican party to win the elections. Scary, and it seems true. Looks like they are trying to do it again in Ohio and maybe even Indiana. Ahhhhh--Fla here we go again!
I don't have anything against anyone on that thread. I do believe that we are entitled to our own opinions. However, it seems they don't post over here, because when we asked them to document what they were attacking us about, they got "mad" and started their own thread. I've only posted over there a couple of times. They seem to resent anyone pointing out that they leave out part of the equation in order to make it "true." It's like reading a book and only getting 1/2 of the sentences in the book. It can certainly skew your story line, if you get my drift!
Watching several news channels this evening, and had to laugh. First, there was a Republican senator (woman) from either Minn or Mi, who stated that because Obama has "close ties" with Ayers, he is a socialist and a terrorist, and the american public should be afraid of him. WTH?????
Then later on a different news program was a male Republican who called Obama a Marxist because he wants to "distribute the wealth." Again, not true and these three words used to change what he was saying in the last debate. AND now it seems he's been called an Arab, Muslim, palling around w/terrorists, Socialist & Marxist. I don't think the people using this vocabulary even know what that means! I'm just waiting for "communist" to be attributed to him. And on the other thread, they seem to believe that if Obama gets elected we will be living in Russia and/or Cuba. Huh????? How they make that connection is beyond ridiculous!
Of course, the other thread does not want to take responsibility for their own slamming on opposing candidates, and evidently we on this thread are the only ones doing the character assassinations on the Republican candidates. Personally, I think the candidates are slamming their own characters, and certainly don't need any help from us. With all their anger and attack mode, I think they need some sympathy and kindness as it seems to be a difficult time for them. And I don't mean that in a condescending way.
Just a little less than 3 weeks and this will be over. We are walking our ballots right down to city hall tomorrow and turning them in--don't trust mailing them in snail mode.
Guess Palin will be on SNL this Sat. night. Who's watching?
-
LuAnn, don't underestimate your intelligence! You're doing great. I do think there's a point where arguing becomes pointless because the logical part of the brain tends to shut down when a subject as personal as politics is discussed. I know I have a hard time seeing the election in a dispassionate, objective way, even while I believe I've made an intelligent, informed choice.
I like that Smerconish says that he made his decision after reading all the memoirs, witnessing the campaigns in action, and interviewing and studying the candidates. What's impressed me most about Obama -- and I've probably said this before -- is that from his Harvard days on, he's been amazingly consistent and temperate. He's never put himself forward as an extreme liberal, although some people have insisted on painting him that way. If you read his writings, listen to his speeches, study his Senate voting record (same as Hillary's) and look at his platform, he's actually pretty moderate and always has been. I think that's why so many conservatives are able to endorse him.
I just got back from my poll worker training class. Nov. 4th is going to be a long, long day (6AM-9:30PM!), but I'm so looking forward to helping out in this historic election. Go Obama!
-
OMG you have a long voting day, our polls are open from 6:30 am to 7:00 pm
-
I'm Canadian and will admit know nothing about Obama or McCain, other than what I've read on the two threads here. I'm laughing though, because from an outsider's perspective, it looks like the two threads are playing a football game, with everyone rahrahing for a touchdown.
I don't envy you guys (collective you)........very difficult decision. To be quite honest, I don't like any of the candidates.
-
Ok, I thought McCain was against all these negative campaign attacks, and yet he is approving the robocalls going out saying in my simplistic terms--that Obama has bffs that are terrorists. Obviously he lies a lot!
Lu Ann,
Just came from the other thread. You are doing great, woman! I think some of us here tried to reason with some of the women on the other thread, but guess you might say we are all hard headed. See, I was banging my head over and over again trying to get them to honestly realize that there is racism alive and well in this country, and couldn't. So, I think I have lost any drive to argue with them about the election. They think I'm a liberal, left leaning anti-racist white woman living in the way, way far out state of CA; where all we do is meditate, visit Haight Ashbury in SF, surf all day and eat vegan food!! Oh, and we are all blond and tan and drive convertibles. Oh, I know I'll think of other attributes applied to us.
Just keep coming back here to vent when they really frustrate you!
