Pink: Not just for Pepto Bismol anymore

Diane - You are slaying me!! Okay, I clicked on the (gag me!) scrap book and it took me to ebay where there were many other pink things for sale. Like an ever-so-useful pink ribbon mini-car/watch keychain. WTF?!!
The giraffe is too much but the scrap book - PUHLEEEZE!!! My sister is an avid scrapbooker and I think even she would gag at that!
I saw pink on Lean Cuisine today - bought something else.
-
I agree that this thread is not about the color pink, but about how merchants and business put the pink ribbon on anything and everything to get people to buy their products. Is it because BC is a woman thing? There is nothing similar for prostate cancer... or is there? I once read that women do the majority of the retail purchasing in the USA -- and advertising IS a big business.
I will wear pink (the color) but am not going to flout (is that the right word) pink ribbons - because I like the color pink. Don't get me wrong, I support funding research, but not at the benefit of merchants.
-
Oh, ladies...
Thanks for the laugh!

Intresting things hanging out on the shelves these days. Here's what I found today at Wally-Mart:
1. The Famous Pink Parker Pen that donates 5¢ of every $3.97 pen purchase to a BC org (the pen used to be $4.95, so I guess there's the silver lining)
2. A lovely pink electronic glass scale (holds 11 whole lbs!) at Target
3. Which was on the shelf next to this wonderfully pink kitchen timer (no where on the package does it say where the proceeds are being donated to)
4. A sassy little frying pan
5. And of course, this year's "must have" pink item: The $299 pink Dyson vacuum cleaner!
-
Someone gave me that pen ROFL!

Did you guys know that September is PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH? I heard that while at the cancer center getting chemo today. Maybe they need to talk to Komen to figure out how to infiltrate the market because I didn't even know there was such a thing as PCAM. I don't even know what color their ribbon is.
I do think the pink ribbon stuff is so extensive in part because it's generally a women's disease (although men get it too). I noticed how retailers really gear their marketing toward women when I had my first son. Every store had about 15 racks of girl's clothes....and one rack of boy's. We are set up to overconsume from birth!
-
Badboob - my husband has heard the Prostate awareness month called "Proctober". Probably can't compete with the pink. Didn't realize it was actually September.

Anyone need a glue stick?

I seriously CANNOT stop laughing!
I just saw some pink ribbon energizer batteries.
-
Speaking of energizer, have you seen these? They were out last October.
-
Until I lost my hair in June, this is what I was using:
My boyfriend bought it for me for Christmas last year (pre-BC), not to support the cause, but just 'cause it was a good brand and the pink was all they had left at the store. Three weeks later I found the lump...
-
maybe it's the pink ribbons that cause bc! (just kidding...)

I found this "darling" little story in this week's Woman's World about the bond between two sisters and how the older one supported the younger one through her brave fight. Long story short - the younger sister died within 2 years. But....there was a side bar to the story informing us to "click here" "Log on to breastcancersite.com once a day and you'll help fund mammograms for women in need--at no cost to you." What does my clicking on their web site do that suddenly gives them the ability to fund mammograms? Next one says "Try this instead of Google" "Search engine lookpink.com gives money to breast cancer related causes every time you do a search." What exactly defines a "breast cancer related cause?" If you don't like those, how about "Send a message using Hotmail" "Hotmail's 'I'm initiative' raises money for charity every time you send an e-mail! Just sign up for a free account, click 'Options' and 'I'm making a difference.' Then choose 'Susan G. Komen for the Cure.'" And if none of the above fits, you can always go to the Post Officer and buy the breast cancer research stamp. More than $58 million has been raised to find a cure.
You've given me a new outlook on the think pink campaign.

The hospital gift shop has pink clogs when I went in today... I have a Mac Power Book with NO windows. Can anyone give a (short) intro to adding pictures to postings?
A great thread and makes me laugh. HUGS, Nancy

Today I saw toilet paper with a big band of pink on the plastic - I think it's Charmin ... it has something about Susan B Komen but I have to admit that I didn't read the package ... I was so surprised to see the pinking of toiletpaper .... I guess we should be happy that the rolls of toilet paper aren't pink or have pink ribbons on each of the sheets.... geez!

I'm surprised there are no pink tampons...speaking of "personal floatation devices"

Obviously, I don't know how to post pictures, either.
Bat...I personally approve of anything pink that can be used to beat the tar outta' somethin'....and that includes the mixer.
At the touch of a button!

As a fundraiser, I am just amazed at the market infiltration of Susan Komen.
Sidebar:A friend was recommended to Nancy Brinker, founder/sister of Susan G. Komen, as a personal assistant. She and Nancy played phone tag all over the world, but Nancy just couldn't light long enough for an interview. My friend decided this was probably a job she could pass on, and Nancy continues painting the market PINK!!!

OK, I've just dried my eyes and my pants. I haven't noticed anything like this in Tasmania..but I don't shop much. The giraffe made me wet myself..how to make your crappy cast object d'art look like a special BC purchase! What a tooler. And how ignorant to hang it off the arse???
But StaceyR's hair straightener really got me..ROFL and then sooky for what she's going through. That hair thing was an omen!
Never use it on your chemo curls when they grow, Stacey!
Thanks Rock. Just what I needed! XX

Kerry, It was fun to hear you are laughing all the way to the land down under. You have got to go on a mission for us. I am sure you can find us a pink kangaroo or koala somewhere?? Better yet, what about a pink tasmanian devil? I am sure you just can't wait to get one of those? I wonder if they have pink poop too?
-
ROFLMAO here. Julie if October is "proctober", then maybe someone is gonna change September to "breastember"... I am off for some retail therapy and the grocery store. Gotta remember to take my camera and document some of this pinkness even if I cant post here. And who on earth ever came up with blue for boys and pink for girls in the first place??? So far I have not seen any "pink pride" but nothing would surprise me.
Have a great day and even better weekend. YOU GO GIRLS and knock down those displays with all the energy you can muster. HUGS, Nancy

Ok, I was going to post a photo of some scrapbooking embellishments that the designer entitled, 'THE LIGHTER SIDE OF BREAST CANCER"...When I went to the "details" page on the website, I saw that a portion of the proceeds are donated to breastcancer.org. UGH and WTF? Which "lighter" side of cancer are we talking about?
-
BTW, if you get on the Komen mailing list for some reason, such as making a donation, you will keep receiving solicitations from them. I had to write them and tell them to take my name off their damned list. The mail finally stopped.
-
"lighter side"
the side without the boob?
your head when you don't have any hair?
it's a puzzler!
eejits!

I'm so glad to know that seeing these ribbons everywhere does bug just me.....
on a recent trip to the store I found pink........chapstick, secret deodorant and cool whip..... did they have to put it on my cool whip???? Was gonna get a pie for a treat for my family and coolwhip for on top till I saw that... got icecream (WITHOUT the ribbon) instead.

Way too many things to post pics of. From cars to M&Ms to a Pink Sponge Bob Beanie Baby.
Go check it out for yourself.

Diane - I have to stick up for one of my March Chemosabe sisters. Melissa (whitecotton) is a Stage III survivor and wanted to do something to give back to BC.org. See this thread:
http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/6/topic/700580?page=1#idx_9
She has a very successful scrapbooking business - her chemo and breast cancer did not hold her back. I admire her. But I admit that the "LIGHTER" side may be a poor product identifier - I believe Melissa calls her line "Thankful".
Just wanted ya'll to know.
Meanwhile I saw a Christmas ornament line that was all pink-ribbony. Can you imagine doing a 'themed tree' about breast cancer!?!
Lisa
