Donna: Glad Im not the only one who was confused.

I thought Obama looked pretty darn good today.
Nicki
-
Summer: Don't understand your question. Please give specific examples of "so focused on race." Ads? Speeches? His policy platforms? He did give a speech on race back in the spring. What else are you referring to?
I saw most of the "big squirm" on the View. Did you notice how McCain didn't really respond to Behar's accusation about the sex ed ad? He said it wasn't a lie, but didn't explain how it was true. And he wouldn't answer Walters' question about how he and Palin were going to reform Washington. He just kept repeating that they were reformers, bent on reform.
Looking forward to Obama's appearance on SNL. I didn't see the service conference interview.
-
If Summer gets her "news" from Hannity and Limbaugh, I can understand why she thinks that Obama's campaign is focused on race, because that's what they lead their listeners to believe. I know, because I flip to their channels occasionally and find it amusing to hear them saying, in effect, "up is down, black is white, wet is dry" etc.,
It's truly a parallel universe that these guys present, which is unfortunate for the millions who don't venture over to NPR once in a while for a reality check

Truth is, in my heart, I wish the best for all of us, and I am eternally grateful that the most top-of-mind concern for me today is politics and weather. There are too many of our sisters who are concerned with much more immediate health concerns. I hope I never lose sight of the fact that it is a blessing to have moved beyond the multiple surgeries and and myriad of treatments of the last 3 years.
Everything is relative!
-
I think the Obama campaign focused on race was just an anti O trying to stir trouble, best to ignore.
Justana, I did forget who can shoot and tell the difference between a man and a duck.
I was shocked that the View, run by the ultraconservative viewmaster alllowed any questions that weren't pandering. Wouldn't Elizabeth be more popular on a Faux news show?
Obama did really well on the service forum. He was in his element discussing things in an intellectual atmosphere. The audience clearly preferred him to McCain. Even though it was his alma mater, I think most Ivy leaguers relate to what he was saying. I was disappointed that no one brought up that the reason ROTC isn't allowed on Ivy campuses is in part, because they discriminate againsts gays, something McCain wants to continue.
-
I don't post in either of these forums because I will probably end up in trouble but I did find it interesting that Palin did her first interview alone and then the McCain campaign announced that they will probably only be traveling together now because they do much better as a team then campaigning seperately. Is that their way of saying she can't interview well?
-
LuAnnH:
probably.
Anna
-
Amy: I agree. Best to ignore, especially when some have a history of stirring up trouble. I didnt get to see the view - only clips of what occurred when I got home from work last night. I got the impression though, that McCain didnt come out smelling like a rose. Talk about playing cards? I think McCains group is playing the gender card. Im glad to see a woman in the running, just not this woman!
LuAnn: I thought the exact same thing - sad that they wont even let us get to know this person who is running for vice president. I would like to ad that McCain doesnt do so well on his own either.
I was reading over at the other place, and I believe in my heart, there is a better chance for peace around the world with Obama. From my point of view, the USA is not well liked in Europe and Asia. I like the fact that Obama is willing to sit down and talk to other leaders. Everytime I hear talk about us invading another country I cringe. Having gone through the Vietnam war and being a protester to that war - Iraq opens up wounds that have been closed for many years. I worry about our children and our grandchildren.
I dont like the dirty politics McCain and his trophy are playing. When Im talking with my coworkers - I get a whole different point of view, from when I come here and read. So many middle class people are for Obama. The lobbyists that are on McCains team makes me nauseated. How in the world with he create change? He wont - thats the point. He is same old, same old. And Palin - who wanted to ban books from a library? Scares me alot.
Nicki
-
LuAnn, there's a principle that goes the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts- I guess that's the repub theory because on their own neither looks very good.
Nic, I love the trophy comment LOL. I know McCain is playinmg the gender card and that's bad for women (and men) because it muddies the waters. I wasn't as sophisticated in my understanding of politics when Ferraro was on the '84 ticket. I was just so thrilled to have a woman in the running. I think there is a small segment of the population who thinks the way I did in '84, but most are savvy enough to realize a grossly unqualified woman doesn't advance the cause for equality. I agree that we have a MUCH greater chance of peace in the world, or at least less war, with Obama/Biden in office. I don't think there's any chance of improvement on that front with McCain/Palin. Palin skirted around the banning books issue in the interview. She didn't come across as honest, forthright, intelligent or ready for prime time? I hate how Palin said, in a snide matter, that she bet Obama wished he chose Hillary for VP. I'm quite sure the repubs had nasty campaign tactics ready for that and would have been just as or even more out of bounds with their attacks on a Hillary/Obama ticket. Palin reminds me an awful lot of George Bush in that she skews facts and thinks we'll fall for them.
I have a close friend who lives in Europe and McCain pretty much scares her whole country. She reminded me that what the US does militarily effects the rest of the world much more than other countries.
Did anyone see Bill Maher last night? I gotta love Janeane Garofalo- she's such a bright, well spoken woman. I couldn't believe how knowledgeable she was about things I never even heard of.
-
I'm not an Obama fan. I was, and am, a Hillary supporter.
Did any of you watch the Palin interview on 20/20 last night?
I have two things to say in Palin's defense:
1) The banning of the books rumor is just that, a rumor concocted by some nut on the internet.
2) She has a firm grasp on the energy situation.
That's it. She stated she is going to curtail lobbyist and special interest federal apportionment funds from Washington, BUT, dollar per dollar per capita in AK versus IL, the people of her state have receieved $222 from Washington and the the people of IL have received $22 per person. She couldn't answer the gay questions, the abortion questions, or the Bridge to Nowhere questions. I wonder how a woman who has been governer for 2 years and mayor of a small town can say with a straight face she is ready to be President of the U.S., if that should happen.
Her statement that as Mayor she did away with small business license renewal taxes in a town of 9,000, was apparently supposed to be a major accomplishment. That's a city issue and has nothing whatsoever to do with Federal govt. She raised sales tax in her town to compensate for the loss.
This whole Palin issue will die down soon and then we'll have to decide between McCain and Obama.
I wish Obama would have picked Hillary. Together they could have done great things.
-
I want to point out that there is no way to know that if Obama had "picked" Hilary, that she would have accepted. For all we know, he did offer her the position and she declinced.
Nicki: I have friends from European countries and China (we do foreign exchange programs and have met some incredible families and we adopted from China so spent time there and once again met great people) and yes, the USA's reputation is in dire need of a wonderful leader who can reassure the rest of the world that we're not all, oh here I go again, like Sarah Palin, the Bushes, McCain and Cheney. The perception they have seem to have of US citizens is almost exactly like that Palin presented at her acceptance speech. (I won't reiterate it. I'm frankly sick of hearing it.) I don't blame them though. I mean look what the past 8 years has done to the world! I hated when Bill Clinton lied about sex, but I think the rest of the world just nodded because it didn't effect anyone directly but the Clintons (and many European countries are a lot more tolerant of adultery than we are). Bush lied and it effected our world in far more, devastating ways.
Anna
-
Anna,
I agree, Clinton's indiscretion certainly bothered others more than me. What bothers me is that the national debt was balanced during Clinton's term and is obviously out of control after 8 years of Bush.
I do think that if Hillary was offered the V.P. spot, there would have been some leak about it.
-
You are very generous Bin
. I didn't see any "firm grasp". She knows that Alaska has tons of oil and that foreign oil leaves us vulnerable. I think firm grasp is watering down the definition to mean she knew more about that than most of the answers. As for the banning of books, the librarian at the time has a different story-- another person who disagreed with Palin and was fired. I don't think just because Palin says she did or didn't do something that we can take that as fact, although the rumors was overstated no matter what the truth is. Maybe I'm cynical because I just didn't find her to be open and honest so I'm distrustful of her answers.BIN, do yiu think Hillary is more qualified than Biden as a VP pick? Because Biden comes from a neighboring state, I probably know more about him than most. He is a great man who has done wonderful things for women and families. I think Obama and Biden can do as much or more than Obama and Clinton.
Ladysuz, the 20/20 interview has some of repeats of questions, but it focused more on domestic issues. Palin seemed less robotic and repetitive and to grasp a few of the questions better. She also misrepresented/lied about some of her positions and showed a lack of understanding. Her domestic policies scare me as much as her foreign policies. I thought Gibson dropped the ball when he asked if she thought sexuality was inborn and a choice, because he didn't ask about her philosophies about policies, but othertwise he did a thorough job.
-
Yep, I have read about the same issues with the Librarian being fired because she refused to allow books to be banned. I do believe the story is true as the Librarian has talked about it.
Nicki

Hi Amy,
Nope ... My comment about Palin and her understanding of the energy issue wasn't made in the context of her interview on 20/20. I believe she does have a great deal more knowledge than most other senators/governors about the energy issue and drilling in AK. Also, in dealing with the big oil companies. I agree with her on drilling in AK, clean coal in the lower 48 and more nuclear energy to make us less reliant on outside energy sources. I also agree with her on the issue of gun control. Beyond that ... we part ways.
I do agree that Gibson dropped the ball in the issue of sexuality. She hedged the question and I felt her answer was untruthful.
I do agree her answers were scripted. Of course they were. The republican campaign would not have let her interview without being prepared.
Regarding the book banning issue ... some of the books listed hadn't even been written at the time the question happened. Do I believe it's possible she asked this question .. yes. Was it in regard to herself or some hypothetical situation? I don't know, regardless, the fact that the question was even raised is downright frightening.
About Biden .. my feelings were just that ... feelings. I don't know a lot about Biden. But Hillary has been my choice since Clinton was first in office and she raised the issue of healthcare, and was sent packing back into the role of "first lady." I'm quite certain Hillary was Bill's number one advisor while he was in office. I don't give a hoot what Bill did morally. But I do care about the laws he signed into legislation and the national parks he saved in Utah. I do care that we had a balanced budget, and Fannie and Freddie Mae weren't being bailed out by the govt, and people weren't losing their homes all across the U.S. I do care that all the jobs in my little town are now sent overseas.
I also wonder what govt programs McCain and Palin have vowed to cut. They haven't said. Perhaps some of the programs will deeply affect the people in my area.
I also agree with Obama's tax plan over McCain's (what I know of each of them). I also believe the strength of our country lies with strengthening the middle class, enabling the poor to reach their goals of self-sufficiency and cutting tax loopholes for the rich (over $500,000 income per year). I do believe capital gain taxes should be cut for under a certain amt (maybe $250K) which would benefit the middle class.
Gotta run,
Bren

we can do this!
get out the vote, stay above the fray, eye on the prize.
i feel fortunate to have a candidate that inspires so many ...
change is coming, real change
we can do this!
that is my mantra of the day ...

have a great one, ladies
-
BIN- I don't disagree that she knows more about Alaskan energy and it's potential than most other members of congress/senators. I just think there is a lot more to a comprehensive energy plan than drilling oil in Alaska. She probably does know her specific area of expertise, Alaskan oil but she hasn't demonstrated knowledge about conservation, wind energy etc. Palin seens myopic. She made me nervous when she said she didn't think twice about taking the VP job and knows she's qualified. Confidence is great thing, but where is the judgment about not even considering whether she could handle the job. Where was the sitting down as a family and discussing what it meant (for a man or a woman). There's a saying that goes a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, and I think that's what you and I believe about strengthening the middle class, empowering the poor with educational and/or training assistance and adequate child care etc.
Nic, she was interviewed briefly on either CNN or MSNBC. She didn't want to trash Palin, in fact, but she did confirm the fact. She seemed afraid to speak her mind, at least she insinuated that she was.
-
Laura, thanks for the reminder about getting out the vote and registering people. Voter turnout will be key and with the Republicans up to their dirty tricks again in Ohio (sending thousands of phony absentee ballots to Democratic strongholds among other shenanigans), we have to be relentless in getting out the vote. In California the Obama campaign is sending volunteers to Nevada to register and get out the vote. I'm sure other blue states have similar programs. Eyes on the prize.
Bren, you bring up a good point about job loss. We tend to forget that whenever politicians start talking about cutting government, or making heath insurance less bureaucratic, there are people who are going to be losing jobs. No one ever talks about that side effect. I guess it would muddy the debate waters too much.
Every independent analysis of the two economic plans I've seen favor Obama's over McCain's. Both candidates inflate the numbers, and neither one is going to balance the budget a la Clinton, but the experts say that Obama's plans will cost the taxpayers billions less than McCain's over the long run. This idea that Democrats tax and spend has been a load of b.s. for a while. But it works as propaganda.
Amy, I enjoyed Janeane on Maher last night. She's amazingly well-informed. I used to listen to her on the radio. She can come across as overly academic and verbose sometimes, but I thought she did a good job last night. She'll definitely call people out when necessary.
-
Ladysuz, The Tax Policy Center is a good place to find non-partisan analyses (www.taxpolicycenter.org). Below is their summary of the two tax plans. It's dry reading for sure! I highlighted a couple of points. I'm assuming most people would fall into the middle-income bracket, not the over $250,000 bracket.
Both candidates prefer to compare their plans to the "current policy" baseline, which would extend the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts and indefinitely extend an indexed AMT "patch"-and collect nearly $3.6 trillion less than under current law over the coming decade. Against that baseline, Obama would raise revenues by about $600 billion over the decade, while McCain would lose $600 billion. But choice of baseline doesn't change how the proposals would affect the budget picture; without substantial cuts in government spending, both plans would sharply increase the national debt. Including interest costs, Obama's tax plan would boost the debt by $3.5 trillion by 2018. McCain's plan would increase the debt by $5 trillion.
The Obama plan would reduce taxes for low- and moderate-income families, but raise them significantly for high-bracket taxpayers (see Figure 2). By 2012, middle-income taxpayers would see their after-tax income rise by about 5 percent, or nearly $2,200 annually. Those in the top 1 percent would face a $19,000 average tax increase-a 1.5 percent reduction in after-tax income.
McCain would lift after-tax incomes an average of about 3 percent, or $1,400 annually, for middle-income taxpayers by 2012. But, in sharp contrast to Obama, he would cut taxes for those in the top 1% by more than $125,000, raising their after-tax income an average 9.5 percent.
These projections are built on descriptions of the candidates' plans provided by senior McCain and Obama staff (see Table 1). However, TPC has also projected costs based upon what candidates have actually said on the campaign trail, and those promises paint a quite different picture (see second panel of Summary Revenue Table).
For instance, TPC estimates that one version of McCain's proposal to create an optional simplified individual income tax system would increase the cost of his plan by more than $1 trillion over 10 years. McCain has provided few details for his plan, but TPC projected the costs of a similar proposal made by the Republican Study Committee.
Obama has proposed raising the payroll tax for those earning over $250,000. Again, he has not provided details, but TPC assumes this would be a 2 percent income tax surcharge on adjusted gross income above $250,000 for couples and $200,000 for others and an additional 2 percent payroll tax for employers on each worker's earnings above those levels. Such a plan would increase taxes on high-income workers by nearly $400 billion over a decade.

I just read a quote from Obama in the newspaper. "If you don't stop lying about me, I'm going to have to start telling the truth about you." Im loving it.

ladysuz- Remember how the repubs (and I) went off on Bill Clinton's "depending on what the meaning of is is?" Seems like they don't mind lawyer speak from their golden girl. Is it so wrong to want a President or VP who's will just tell the spirit of the truth not just something that's almost technically true but really a lie? Or Bush's "According to our (faulty) intelligence (that we deliberately misinterpretted) Iraq has wmds" .Palin lied about going to Iraq too http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/13/palin.iraq/?iref=hpmostpop or maybe it wasn't a lie and she didn't know the difference. (CNN) -- Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican vice presidential nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor's foreign travel.
In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland.
A Palin aide in Alaska had said Iraq was also one of the military stops on that trip.
The Boston Globe, however, reported Saturday that in response to questions about the trip, Alaska National Guard officials and campaign aides said Palin did not go past the Kuwait-Iraq border.
In addition, campaign aides also confirmed reports to CNN Saturday that Palin's time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a refueling stop.
The article goes on but that's the important part.
Palin has a trail of people she fired (some later being rehired) who have similar stories to the troopergate. Did anyone see SNL last night? How funny was Tina Fey? Did you see Amy Poeler hiding that baby bump LOL. I thought Obama was supposed to be on it.
Did anyone see the CNN specials on Palin and Biden? I watched Palin's and some of Biden's. If you watch Grey's Anatomy, there's a minor character who's annoyingly cheerful and optimistic that everyone wants to smack who reminds me a little of Palin, except the character is more likable. I think she had a date with Derek last season.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the Sunday morning shows today and to hear what the pundits have to say. I'll be channel flipping to get a little taste of the different views, though I'll skip faux.
-
Amy: I saw parts of SNL and was laughing out loud! I loved it. Obama cancelled his appearance because of all the devastation by Ike.
I didnt watch the CNN specials. Im so sick of Palin I cringe everytime I hear her speak. Im trying to watch the Sunday morning news shows but right now the focus is on Ike and its devastation. But then again, maybe Im up too early.

Tina and Amy were amazing last night as Palin and Clinton. Tina Fey looks an awful lot like her, too, which made it even funnier! At one point in their mock public address about sexism in the campaign, Tina started posing for the cameras - then said "I don't know what that is" when Amy/Hillary said something about the Bush Doctrine. Good stuff...
-
nic, I didn';t realize Obama cancelled until i stayed up til the very end waiting for him. I'm not sure he needed to do so because of the disaster, but better safe than sorry because surely McCain would have used it against him even though McCain would have probably not cancelled his appearance.
-
I was changing channels yesterday going from CNN to MSNBC watching stuff about Hurricane Ike. They kept showing a message on the bottom saying Obama cancelled. I turned SNL on and immediately fell asleep, but did see the clips of Tina Fey - it was a riot.
Im feeling a bit better today. I like the way Obama is fighting back. His ads are good and truthful at that. Cant wait until they hit the campaign trail this week.

Here is what a balanced budget can do for a state a province or a country for that matter, and it just keeps getting better. This is just meant as an example of what a balanced budget means to citizens and what it can do for citizens. It is possible.
What's in Budget 2008 for Albertans?
What's in Budget 2008 for...
- This is Alberta's 15th consecutive balanced budget.
- It includes $1 billion in savings to Albertans and Alberta businesses with the elimination of health care premiums on January 1, 2009.
- The budget is aimed at managing Alberta's growth and priorities for the future.
- All Albertans benefit from the increased funds to improve municipal infrastructure, highways, hospitals and schools.
- Budget 2008 maintains Alberta's overall low taxes.
- If Alberta had the same tax system as any other province, Albertans and Alberta businesses would pay between $10 billion and $18 billion more in taxes each year, after the elimination of health care premiums. This is equivalent to $3,000 to $5,000 more per capita in taxes every year.
-
Will Clinton left office there was a budget surplus. Now there is a huge deficiet not even counting all the money we owe other countries, china included for the war. Bush is the only president who thought it was a good idea to cut taxes, mostly for rich folks, during a time of war. Of course, this won't be his problem after Jan 20th, it'll just be part of his awful legacy. Republicans always talk about dems not having fiscal responsibility when Bush is the poster child for it. Obama will have a difficult task, in January, because until we start paying down our debt and balancing the budget as a country we'll be scraping by, not moving toward a more financially solid position.
-
Funny how we were all falling asleep watching SNL. Our age is showing! Tina Fey was great. She had the accent and gestures down, not to mention the beauty pagaent 'tude. I loved Hillary's line about Palin wearing Tina Fey glasses. Poehler is always hilarious as Hillary.
I think Obama and Biden are taking the right course in continuing to ignore Palin and staying focused on McCain. Let the media, SNL and the blogs deal with her. Obama needs to keep hammering away at McCain's co-opted message of change. Historically candidates who run against their own party don't win.
I don't envy the new administration's task come 2009. The deficit, the war, infrastructure, healthcare . . . it's all a mess. Campaign promises aside, I think recovery will be long and slow. And whatever happened to environmental issues? They seem to have gotten lost in all the talk of pigs and pork.
-
LA- I fear that once again environmental issues will take a back seat to what many see as more acute concerns. Price of oil goes up-- drill baby drill for example. I think environmentalists (paging Al Gore & company) need to remind people how drilling in new areas and off shore will effect the environment. I'd love to see Obama talk about his plan for the environment more often, although that doesn't seem to be a priority for most voters right now.
Finally, Obama is going back after McCain's so called honor in new campaign ads. I know I was slow to come around to going negative ad wise. One of the new ads will go say oaraphrased "he deserved honor as a war hero but he's not acting very honorable as a presidential campaign." then quotes about specific lies, then something about the US deserving better in a president. I don't even consider this an attack ad, because it talks about his specific behavior of lying in campaign ads (like teaching sex ed to 5 year olds) rather than going after him on existential vagueness.
-
I keep thinking about Kucinich's cry for American to "wake up." The headline in the LA Times today is "Wall St. scrambles as banks teeter." Scary stuff. Seems we're on the brink of another Great Depression and what are we talking about in the presidential campaign? The trivia of smear ads. Green energy is connected to economic growth and the job market and could be discussed as part of the solution to the financial crisis, in my opinion. But maybe Obama has to keep it simple.
I'm all in favor of Obama going medieval on McCain's ass (to quote Maher) as negative ads apparently work. Call McCain out on his honor and then keep hammering home the message that his policies are the same old same-old. I think it's more significant that his advisors, like Phil Gramm, are neocons right out of the Bush administration than that they're lobbyists or former lobbyists.
Here's a "fun" website for anyone interested in Obama's tax plan (as fun as taxes can be):
