8. We believe in our responsibility to be disciples of Christ, to love all people and to fulfill the Commission of Christ to go and make disciples of all nations by bearing witness of Christ through life and word in the power of the Holy Spirit.
When there is a lack of respect for other people's religions and an attempt to convert, that causes a lot of problems in the world. For a president or vp to project an attitude of disrecpt for other religions. Didn't Bush make a big faux pas about that at the beginning of his invasion of Iraq? Speaking of which, in Bob Woodward's new book where Bush was genuinely surprised the Iraqis weren';t more grateful for our invasion and showing him appreciation.. wtf? We need a president who is at least in touch the views of people from other cultures and with different beliefs and to respect that. Not one with the attitude everyone else but his/her religion is going to hell.

LA- I think Obama has to fight fire with fire through the 527s. There is so much McCain fodder that would make for really ugly commercials. "McCain denounced Carl Rove's tactics when Rove accused McCain of fathering his adopted black daughter, now Carl Rove is on McCain's payroll..... This isn't the kind of change washington needs..." The 527s could bring out McCain calling his wife a cunt etc.
McCain went way too far with the lies in the commercial about Obama's only educational accomplishment was wanting to teach kids in kindergarten sex education before they can read when the policies were actually about good touch/bad touch.

First, my reference to Republicans is a general one, aimed at those who are against Obama who have posted repeatedly on this thread -- today, yesterday and many days before. If I offended anyone by calling them Republican, I apologize. I know some of you are independents.
Second, of course the Assembly of God church isn't going to state in writing that they're against separation of church and state. They'd lose their tax-exempt status if they did. Palin's recent trip to that church's conference, which she billed to the taxpayers, is coming under scrutiny as we speak. She called for a "Christian Week" celebration in Alaska this year (but no Jewish week, or any other religious week). The point is, Obama already went through the fire with Wright, and people either accepted his statements and denunciations or they didn't. Palin needs to do the same because her continuing affliation with controversial churches is plainly visible. As I said, fair's fair!

Amy,
I am not responding to be argumentative, but would like to comment on the "attempt to convert" issue. Most Christians believe that accepting God/Jesus means we will go to heaven when we die. Being that we are commanded to love others as Jesus loves us, we are motivated to share (witness) with others because we also believe that those who die without accepting God will be in hell for an eternity. As believers, the idea that anyone might go to hell is unacceptable because we believe it is a place of eternal torment. So, it is an extension of a Christian's love for humanity to witness to others; we don't try to "convert" for conversion's sake or to try to impose our beliefs (which we accept as TRUTHS) on others. It is not someone's ACTIONS that condemn them to hell, but INACTION (not accepting Christ). I find it reprehensible that many who claim to be Christians go around spouting off about so-and-so going to hell because they DID or DO something. I do understand, though, how uncomfortable it could make a non-believer to feel as though a president's particular belief system might not be best for the country.
I do believe that many atrocities have been committed and will continue to be committed in the name of religion (not just christianity). It hurts my heart to know that some clergy twist the scriptures to perpetuate their own agendas against entire races of people or gays/lesbians and others. We are to love all people and it is for God to judge. A true Christian strives to be like Jesus--caring, accepting, and forgiving. Sadly, there are many who claim to be Christian who do not behave as one.
I try to be thoughtful of others and not impose my beliefs on them. The concept of Christian salvation is a personal choice, so if one were to coerce another into accepting Christ it wouldn't be that person's choice. I do believe that the 10 commandments are good rules for living and that the world would be a better place if we all abided by them. I DON'T believe in hatred toward others because they think or believe differently than I do. I do NOT believe that Christianity is a requirement to be a good president, but it is my personal preference that a president at least has a moral identity that includes "Christian" ideas such as those found in the ten commandments.

Laphoenix...I'm LOL-ing at the being offended by being called a republican! I suppose I am independent as I don't align myself with a party so much as the individual; I am still quite undecided and take offense with both dems and repubs on many things.
I am not an Assembly of God Christian and find it shocking that they would push for dissolution of the separation of church and state. The reality is that it is more beneficial for churches to have that separation in place.
Now, since I've written entirely too much after saying I would post no longer, I'll stop!

I think it's time for Obama to up the Ante and get tougher verbally.
Foremost I want to say that I find it dispicable of a lady to refer herself to a breed of dogs that attack and kill children unprovoked. That could only arouse testoserone laden individuals but here too, I am wondering if.
The lipstick phrase had been used by McCain on Hillary and other Republicans as well...it is a phrase just like "what walks like a duck...."

One of the morning shows noted that under normal circumstances, the child of a presidential candidate or high powered politician in the armed services would know better than to tout that child's deployment date for reasons of safety of that child and the group s/he's fighting with. Palin seemed not to be aware of this in the numerous times she's said her son is being deployed from Alaska on 9/11, The (george bush run) military supposedly contemplated allowing Palin to speak today, particularly publically, but decided that she was speaking as Gov. and not candidate. I'll be interested in seeing if her speech can remain focused on the deployment and not presidential politics.

<<I think it's time for Obama to up the Ante and get tougher verbally.>>
i completely agree.. the mccain campaign has hit a new low, desperate and devisive..
he has made our entire election process a joke around the world.
i hope we can get beyond the "...isms" and elect real change in november.

I wish we can all get back to the issues. For one, how will they cleanup after the worse president in my lifetime. How to help healthcare. etc, etc. I am sick and tired of the mud that McCain's campaign is throwing. Keep to the issues, Let me know what you will do for the people that Bush has forgotten these past 8 years. Obama has stayed with the same stand and he has not lowered himself. Oh, McCain's campaign manager tries to mixup Obama's speeches but come on how stupid do they think we are? Will we have another Florida? Sorry if I rattle too long. My expanders are killing me, so I have to hit someone. It might as well be McCain.
-
NanaJean, sorry for your pain. Politics is a good venting tool, though.
Stayed up late to watch Obama on Letterman last night and thought he was his usual poised, thoughtful and charming self. Of course the only clip they're running is his response to the pig comment, which while good, is hardly relevant. I wish he could do more of these long one-on-one interviews so more people could see how well-versed and confident he is. Do we really want leaders who need people whispering the answers in their ears, literally or figuratively? Haven't we already been there, done that?
I've heard so many pundits talking about which political strategies work and how it's never about issues anymore. The McCain folks have obviously decided their campaign is going to be about personality and not issues. McCain can't win on the issues, so they're going to make it about the scary black man vs. the POW and the hockey mom. I've noticed an up-tick in the number of overtly racist comments from McCain supporters on liberal message boards lately. It's disturbing and disheartening.

In general, I don't have a problem with a mother of five becoming a VP. Mom's who run a household while working full-time should be able to at least handle the VP's office!
However, and this is a big one ...
I seem to be the only one of my friends who is picking up on one issue which causes at least me to wonder about Palin's judgement. (I apologize is this was discussed a while back). While she was >7 months pregnant with a high risk child (down's syndrome babies are at high risk for all kinds of complications, but especially heart defects), she decided to fly to Dallas to give a talk at a National convention. Having gone through a high-risk pregnancy, I know that I was forbidden from travelling after 7 months. Not only that, but she suspected that she was going into labor AND STILL GOT ONTO THE PLANE BACK TO ALASKA! Like there aren't hospitals in Dallas? It seems to me to be wanton disrespect for her own health, let along the health of this potentially fragile child.
Now, I also take offense at a lot of other Palinisms, such as harping on community organizers, her rewriting of the Bridge to Nowhere history, etc. But, as a feminist, I think she gives women a bad name by not protecting the birthing situation of her son.
-
Palinisms, I like that. I agree with you about the plane thing and the dichotomy of touting being a mother while risking her life that that of her disabled child. I think that a MR newborn and pregnant teen add different challenges to the already difficult task of raising 5 kids. Republican Joe Scarborough quit his seat in congress a few years ago because his 14 year old son was having problems needed him at home. I respect that so much from a mother or a father. If Palin didn't already have two children with special needs (teen pregnancy and infant with downs) the 5 kids wouldn't be an issue for me. I do think people can be poor parents and good politicians, I respect those who are able to do both and I think I respect parents who put their kids ahead of their jobs even more, as Joe Scarborogh did.
-
Good grief - she had the okay of her doctor - if she had gone against her doctor's orders that would be another thing. Her doctor told her to fly back to Alaska.
Who are you to say whether a woman works or not? I am a working mother with five children. I remember the "Mommy" wars - I thought we had gotten past that - that we respected those who had chosen different paths - I guess not. As my 19-year-old dd has said - "Looks like feminism is dead and the so-called "feminists" have killed it".
-
Have you ever studied the feminist movement suz? Do you have an understanding that it means equality among the genders, not that women are better than men. On what authority other than Palin's statements do you have it that her doctor told her to make the 8 hr trek?
-
If she really did go with with the approval of her doctor, which I sincerely doubt and have seen no proof of, then it further questions Palin's lack of judgment in choosing a stupid doctor who either didn't know better or just told her what she wanted to hear. No qualified doctor would have given approval to such a risky endeavor.
It was foolish and unsafe (and unnecessary) to travel in the first place. Even celebrities plant it after the 7th month. They understand the risks and put their unborn child's needs above their own maniac ego. I don't usually judge other mothers' birth plans, or at least I try not to, but since she uses being a mom as part of her resume, well, it opens her up to grading. I give her about a d-minus.
This lack of sound judgment, in addition to the many other incidents, and especially her hypocrisies, make me really frightened about who could someday answer that infamous 3:00 a.m. phone call.
O4prez: I like your Scarborogh example.

Personally, I like how the Obama campaign hasn't taken the "bait" and made this race about Palin. I said from the beginning, that she was a "hail mary" by the McCain campaign to get Hillary voters. Having watched their tactics over the last week, I see that they are trying to do anything they can do change the conversation to something, anything other than McCain. They literally think people are stupid enough to believe their feigned outrage and ridiculous accusations of sexism against the dems.
I have stopped paying attention to Palin. I feel sorry for her in the next several weeks, she's in way over her head and was never intended to be a true player. She was just a pawn, picked by Rove, to create a distraction. And while the media is having a frenzy, the Obama campaign is staying on message, on course to win. As well he should.
-
Oh my gosh - they have made this all about Palin - you would think BO was running against her instead of McCain. That is all they are talking about in the MSM - BO needs to get back on message - but I don't think he can - how dare a woman be more popular than he is!
-
suz - the "MSM" is NOT Barack Obama's campaign. His campaign hasn't changed on bit since Palin was added to the ticket.
-
Justana, good point about chosing a doctor who, if she gave the advice of flying, is a mal practice suit waiting to happen. Don't OBGs have the highest malpractice rate of any medical specialty?
Suz5, you totally miss the point and I don't know you continually post on this thread when you've got several others to trash Obama.
-

Actually my take on it is the Republican party members are the ones making it look like Palin is running directly against Obama. Even McCain, at his acceptance speech, sounded more like her proud grandpa than someone who wants to be the next president of the United States. I haven't seen many democrats say much about her at all, except to point out that she is the polar opposite of everything most of us (speaking for liberal democrats, not everyone) believe in, because face it, that was part of why she was selected, to collect the Hilary voters. And it was an insult to think women vote just based on gender.
I wonder what the whiplash would have been if McCain had chosen a mixed race man?

Wow laura, that's great.
I wonder what the whiplash would have been if McCain had chosen a mixed race man?
Do you mean if he couldn't have found a mixed raced woman brought up by funadmentalist Christians who was married to a Jewish Man?

Palin knew the child has down syndrome before giving birth. Maybe she wanted to leave it up to God if it makes it or not (in her mind letting go of the responsibility)....the life of the baby was in God's hands...but made it.
If I knew I have a special needs child I would see to it that I get ASAP to a clinic which has a specialty in special needs birth....not hanging around for a day and fly across the country....just my 2 cents..

That's a very good ad! Heartfelt and simple. Love the last shot of the crowd. I think it's better than some others the campaign's put out recently.
This Defenders of Wildlife ad is hard to watch, but I think it's also an incredibly effective one. There's debate about whether it will turn people against Palin. I think it will, or at least provide a distraction, but then I'm not a voter in a swing state. If you can stand to watch it, what do you guys think?

Darn.. it didn't come thru...
-
LA- It was too brutal to watch, but I listened to it and peeked through my fingers- the ad shows how brutal the policies are to animals but I think some on the fence might feel sorry for Palin (not the wolves) because there are some who are looking to see her as a victim.
-
"Do you mean if he couldn't have found a mixed raced woman brought up by funadmentalist Christians who was married to a Jewish Man?"
LOL! You forgot one who can shoot too (we don't want another friend saying, "Oops, sorry I got in your way," Cheney incident).
Yep, an antichoice, antigay, antiresponsible, antieducation, gun toting "religious" (I'm an atheist but show me in the bible where shooting wolves from helicopters is "WWJD"?), lipsticked pit bull is exactly what we need in the white house. But how cute, she has a special needs baby whose wellbeing she gambled with and a cute kid hawking loogies on his head. Great photo ops, I wonder how much time she really spends with them.
I wonder how long the pregnant teens' marriage will last, especially with the reluctant father saying he doesn't want kids. I wonder who will end up raising the baby. Well, no I don't; there will be a "staff".
Sorry, sore today so already in a bad mood and kind of disgusted that there are people saying her insipid interview was good. It wasn't good, it was freaking frightening. I'm probably just jealous that she can get by with less sleep than I can. That and what has she ever struggled with? Obama, obviously with being mixed race. McCain to his credit was a prisoner of war, and I respect his stoic survivorship (though I think he exploits it and Obama does not.) Sarah Palin seems to have gotten by on being cute and mean as a, well, pit bull. I'll have to think about Biden, because at first I didn't like him but I did like his DNC speech.

Why is Obama's campaign so focused on race?
-
I dont like McCains ads. I believe he has been trying to hit below the belt from the very start. They are out right lies and I loved the way those gals on the view went after him today. I only saw part of it - but he sure looked like he was whimpering.
Summer - JMO, I dont see Obamas campaign being about race at all.
I still say, Palin is not VP material. She is not ready and has demonstrated a record of making poor choices.
