Positive Obama thread

Well, I take it back. Seems like she really liked the federal govt when she was mayor! Its taxpayer money anyway.
The YouTube vid is hilarious. I don't care what anyone says, he was not looking at her "notes" (unless as one commenter said, her notes were taped to her behind). It's funny how men always think they're being subtle when they're ogling. Playing with his wedding ring was another giveaway. Calling Dr. Freud! After seeing this, my husband declared that GOP should now stand for Grumpy Old Perverts.
Do you think Tina Fey will be playing Sarah on SNL this weekend? I'm betting on it.
-
Well, I must admit, I am torn on one question...will Palin withdraw from the election before or after the convention? There's no way she will stay on the ticket through the election - way too much baggage!
-
Tina Fey, without a doubt!
(I also see glimpses of Mariska Hargitay in Sarah Palin...)
-
<<There's no way she will stay on the ticket through the election>>
she might not have a choice
-
tina fey is going to have so much fun with this, i think ...
i bet snl is already writing this one ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=006axc2aELE&feature=related
i think mariska will be great in the made for tv movie that will probably come out shortly ....
-
i hope that the elections get back to discussing things like
what did "mission accomplished" mean, healthcare, supreme court appointments...
soon really soon... but i guess that probably doesn't sell magazines...
-
I predict they'll keep her on through the convention and then she'll withdraw her name due to "personal matters." Then maybe McCain can get his true first pick--Lieberman.
I just heard that tonight in addition to a video tribute to Teddy Roosevelt, they're doing one to Abraham Lincoln. Isn't there an unwritten rule somewhere that only people who were alive when pictures moved should get video tributes? Maybe they're trying to compensate for the Palins' secessionist tendencies. You just have to laugh.
-
Anybody else watching the convention? Everytime they say "country" I can't help but think of the "c"-word that McCain used on his wife!
Does Lieberman really believe anything he says??
-
<<Anybody else watching the convention? >> i listened to it on npr ....or at least part of it...
all the reporter asked anybody about was sarah!
at some point it reminded me of george one's commercials, that talked of a kinder gentler nation.
that made me sad. so i stopped listening. i always loved the imagery of a kinder gentler nation even though i was never a bush supporter.
lieberman is lieberman, he is an AIPAC puppet and calls for pre-emptive strikes with pastor hagee,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjMRgT5o-Ig one bizarre individual in my opinion....i am looking forward to the coming months as we move down the road and elect barack obama and joe biden to run our country. change is good. and oh do we need change.
economy, iraq, healthcare, supreme court ...time for change in my opinion...
time to shuffle the deck.
-
this is where we stand ...
-
Amy--I only asked about the DUI incident because I thought it was recent, and I agree that whether old or recent, it has no bearing--was just interesting. No one leads a stellar life, or has perfection in all their relationships...
djd--did try to watch some of the convention tonight, Bored me to tears...does Palin speak tomorrow night?? that might be more interesting. I know the GOP is scrambling to work around the threat that Gustav might have been and I give them credit for bringing anything at all together on such a grand scale.
I'll be quiet for a bit--my butt is getting sore from sitting on this "fence" and I have a crick in my neck from jerking this way, then that way...
...huggssss to all
-
junie- if the candidate rather than the spouse had the DUI, it would be relevant to me, particularly if it was recent and the candidate either got preferential treatment in the courts and/or was st6till drinking. I don't care what the spouse does unless it impacts the candidate professionally.
djd- i watched some of last night, i had to switch off when it got too anti everything I believe in. Thompson seemed to drone on (and on and on and on). You'd think being an actor he'd have a better presentation. I can't stomach watching much of the convention.
I will probably watch palin speak today and the story of her life.
Obama was home for his kids' first day of school. I hope he's resting up for what's sure to be a busy next few months.
What do you guys think about Obama's "don't know much about the economy/wonderful world" ad against McCain. I love it. Not sure if people who aren';t in swing states see it as much as I do,
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/25/new-obama-ad-mccain-dont_n_121105.html
-
I watched a little bit of Thompson's speech but that was about all I could take. When I get a chance, I've been listening to the Air America team reporting from the convention. It was amusing to hear Ron Reagan reflecting on the goings-on. Sounds like the GOP is the one with the unity problem.
They aren't running any Obama ads in California. The only time I see one is on CNN. Seems the effect of any ad is cumulative, so I guess we'll have to wait and see if the Wonderful World one hits the mark. Assuming Palin stays on the ticket, I hope they're putting together an ad that ticks off all the crap she's implicated in. There's yet another scandal about her firing the longtime Wasilla police chief because he wanted to close the bars early (from 5AM to 2AM) to cut down on drunk driving. Bar owners had given her contributions and complained. She fired him when he wouldn't give in. Let's see how they're going to spin THAT one!
The polls do look good, especially the electoral ones, which have consistently shown Obama ahead. Of course, Kerry was ahead in the exit polls on election day, and we know how that turned out!
-
LA, do you think we'll hear talks of sexism any time there's a negative ad against Palin? I'm worried that the repubs will play the gender card any chance they get. At least maybe that'll stop McCain with the POW tourettes.
-
looking good ladies, obama is maintaining that 50% poll bounce
davis, mccains campaign manager, says that it is the worst republican climate since nixon/1972, so i would expect them to play any card they can.
i, for one, give the american voter a lot of credit when it comes to seeing through b.s.
speaking of voters, i am off to register some
barack is going to sit down with bill o'reilly tonight, i will tune in for sure...
have a good one!
-
Oops...what happens when CONSERVATIVE commentators aren't aware that their mikes are still live
From TalkingPointsmemo.com:
-
wow, donna, wow wow wow ...
i feel bad for kay too, she was supposed to speak tonight and they changed that...
those arent just conservative commentators, those are ex party employees...
"Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan and former John McCain adviser, Time columnist, and MSNBC contributor Mike Murphy"
i think they know there stuff...
well, my bet is sarah hits a homerun tonight with the party faithful and once she comes out from behind the firewall she is going to have to start answering some questions and that will be very interesting for sure...
just caught leibermans speech from last night, surprised at how austere the stage was, certainly not like the reagan days or even george one ....
i registered six people on my watch today .... five women and one man
that tape is going to get a lot of play, mccain is going to have a hissy fit over that one, i think.
-
Donna: WOW AGAIN!!!! I can WAIT till this audio grows some legs..... I am so sick of all the republican talking heads....see, even THEY don't believe the junk they spew out.....
-
it seems the national enquirer is standing by their upcoming issue that includes sarah affair talk ...the enquirer has sent a few members from their edwards team up there and the wooten family is talking....
didn't the enquirer break the rush limbaugh drug story too?
-
Couple of random thoughts while watching the coverage...
1) The "enthusiasm" on the convention floor is not living up to today's hype.
2) The press made a huge deal about the Democratic party being divided, which was untrue. But Ron Paul is holding a "protest convention" in Minneapolis with nearly 10,000 attendees. Um...which party is "divided"?
3) Why is Carly Fiorna sporting a mullet????
[editing to add] Carly - we get it - you "know" John McCain.
-
hey all: The Peggy Noonan audio just hit the CNN.com ticker...
-
Great audio! Cynical is the word that's been leaping to my mind a lot lately. The Palin pick just feels like a big f-u (pardon my French) from McCain. I've heard a number of comments about how dead the convention is in general, especially in comparison to the Dems'. And how there's a lot of muttering and whispering about Palin and whether they can get rid of her.
To answer your question, Amy . . . Look like the Repugs have already started with the, "the Dems are ganging up on Palin because she's a woman!" thing. They can try it, but I don't think it's going to fly, because it's going to be mostly women who are dumping on her! Campbell Brown for one. Even Katie Couric was pretty rough. I think it's progressive women who are particularly outraged by the pick, because they see it as opportunistic and not hard-won.
I'd never thought I'd say this, but "go, Ron Paul!" And Bob Barr!
-
got to hand it sarah she is a terrific cheerleader, otherwise, safe, overscripted, didn't say much...
the peggy noonan audio is everywhere
the polls are looking very good for obama, i am very encouraged.
take care, be well, i will catch up with y'all later ...

Clooney's Obama fundraiser in Geneva a sellout
Tue Sep 2, 2008 3:54pm EDTBy Stephanie Nebehay
GENEVA (Reuters) - George Clooney has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama by headlining an exclusive event for Americans in Geneva, one of the world's most affluent cities.
The Hollywood actor and director, fresh from the world premiere of the Coen brothers' comedy "Burn After Reading" in Venice, slipped without fanfare into the Swiss city on Tuesday for his first appearance on behalf of the Democratic nominee.
Dressed in a black suit and tie, Clooney signed autographs but did not comment as he squeezed his way past fans gathered in the narrow streets of Geneva.
Some 170 contributors paid $1,000 a head to hear him speak at a cocktail party held at a museum in Geneva's Old Town.
And 75 high-rolling supporters spent $10,000 each to attend "an intimate seated dinner" with the 47-year-old star which followed at the organizer's nearby apartment, according to the American lawyer who set up the twin "private" events.
"Mr. Clooney gave an excellent speech tonight; it was very stirring and moving. Barack Obama is the right person to repair our relations with the rest of the world," an American man told Reuters Television as he left the cocktail on his way to the dinner.
An American woman said of Clooney's remarks: "Everybody who was there was already fired up, but it only sort of affirmed what we believe already. He definitely had his talking points down, with great deliveries. He was very funny."
"FULLY SUBSCRIBED"
Earlier, organizer Charles Adams said on local morning radio that the event was "fully subscribed".
"Actually most of our guests for dinner are coming from elsewhere -- people are flying in from Los Angeles, Prague, London, Zurich and so on," said Adams, who serves on Obama's National Finance Committee.
"I personally assured George Clooney that Geneva is a city where reserve is a way of life, that he won't be attacked by fans trying to tear off his shirt," he told the daily Le Temps.
The two events could infuse more than $900,000 into the Democratic war chest ahead of the November 4 election which pits the Illinois senator against Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona, who is due to be formally nominated on Wednesday.
In keeping with U.S. laws, only American citizens were allowed to buy tickets to the fundraiser which has had normally sober Geneva buzzing. The scenic city featured in Clooney's 2005 film "Syriana", for which he won a best supporting actor Oscar.
"It is the most anticipated 'people' event of the year, but also the most discreet," Geneva daily Le Temps said.
Hollywood has long had a strong connection with U.S. politics. Actors Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger were both elected Republican governors of California, and Reagan went on to become the 40th U.S. president.
Gwyneth Paltrow currently appears in a film ad on YouTube for Democrats Abroad, encouraging American expatriates to register and cast their ballots.
Nearly 6 million Americans live abroad, including some 16,400 in Switzerland. About 4,500 of them reside in Geneva, known for its high-end jewelers and watchmakers, as well as its private banks catering to the very rich.

I think the democrats are staying focused on the issues and not being distracted by smoke and mirrors.

Good morning all..... well, I saw a brief recap of last night's Palin speech and all it proved to me is that she can read a teleprompter. No substance to any of it (of course she didn't even write it) and I thought it was crass. I loved the comment about the difference between her and a pitbull is "lipsitck" .... puleeeze.....
Funny how Romney and Giuliani never mentioned GW once! Not once!!! If things are going so great for this country why is GW not even mentioned!!!!
I guess when you have nothing to talk about, then personal attacks against your opposition is all that's left. very sad....
I cringe when I hear the repubs saying anyone who is not on board with Palin is a sexist....how about the fact that she is not qualified!
I also felt very badly about the fact that they dragged that poor kid, Levi to the convention to convey this big happy family ... it breaks my heart. I would be sick if he were my son. The whole thing is a sham.
-
I'm so glad to be among other pro-obama folks. The best part of Sarah Palin's speech was that she didn't say she was going to try to "protect" families from gay people (even though she votes as if she would) and I didn't have to hear one more reason that the republicans don't see me worthy of rights and equality, That said, people, particularly those who are not aware of her ultraconservative social views.
I think Palin pulled at the heartstrings of a certain segment of the female population, by using her special son as an example why she'll be great for washington. Of course she doesn't mention how she is (or maybe was before her son) against funding such social and educational programs. There are people who (unfortunately) vote who will take the republican convention speeches and attacks as gospel and indisputable fact.
My mood during the democratic convention was upbeat and one of belonging in my country. The republican party treats me liken an unwelcome interloper.
-
As many of you know, I dont post much on the politcal threads. I was happy to read this thread. I didnt like Palin's speech at all. Despite beging good at reading telepromter - she still came across pretencious and without substance - JMO!
I wish the media would move on already about whether she is a good mother or not. Just like tripneg's posts. Where is all the talk about healthcare, forclosures, economy, jobs, gas prices etc.
All this talk against the media for doing what? Doing their job? We have already learned she was not fully vetted, husband belonged to a group that wanted Alaska to become a territory instead of a State.
I dont like her. As far as Im concerned its business as usual with the Republicans. I heard on the news "Reagan has been resurrected." Well I guess thats supposed to make me feel good?
I have been pretty quiet about my feelings regarding this whole election, yet today I find myself feeling angry. I feel like she is taking her beliefs and shoving them down my throat. She is not going to be bullied by the press - hmmmm this after only 4 days? Maybe she isnt as tough as as she says she is. I found many of her statements offensive and Im glad I had this thread to come to cause I sure needed to vent. When I was talking to my husband, I was raising my voice and he thought I was yelling at him.
Thanks for listening
Nicki

Truthfully, I doubt she could have won me over, no matter what she said. However, I did watch and was under-whelmed. It was a very shallow, petty, lie-packed speech.
-
I don't post much on politics either. My own 16 year old daughter was busy studying last night during the republican convention, and then in bed during the last half hour of Palin's speech. I only mention this because she hopes to be a doctor someday, maybe merging with research on breast cancer. I am proud of her in a different way.Tender
