St. JOhn of the Cross December 14, 2004

In St. John of the Cross we find darkness and light, suffering and joy, sacrifice and love united together so closely that they seem at times to be identified."

    In John's words:
    "Never was fount so clear,
    undimmed and bright;
From it alone, I know proceeds all light
    although 'tis night."

    Litany of the Cross

The cross is the hope of Christians
the cross is the resurrection of the dead
the cross is the way of the lost
the cross is the savior of the lost
the cross is the staff of the lame
the cross is the guide of the blind
the cross is the strength of the weak
the cross is the doctor of the sick
the cross is the aim of the priests
the cross is the hope of the hopeless
the cross is the freedom of the slaves
the cross is the power of the kings
the cross is the water of the seeds
the cross is the consolation of the bondsmen
the cross is the source of those who seek water
the cross is the cloth of the naked.
We thank you, Father, for the cross.

We beseech Thee, O Lord, that Thy grace may ever precede and accompany our deeds; let it tend to make us ever mindful of good works. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

"Dear Lord, the Great Healer, I kneel before you,

Since every perfect gift must come from You.

I pray, give skill to my hands, clear vision to my mind,

kindness and meekness to my heart.

Give me singleness of purpose, strength to lift up a part

of the burden of my suffering fellow men, and a true

realization of the privilege that is mine.

Take from my heart all guile and worldliness,

That with the simple faith of a child, I may rely on You.

    Stay with me,
and then I shall begin to shine as You shine:
so to shine as to be a light to others.

The light, O Jesus, will be all from You.
None of it will be mine.
    No merit to me.
It will be You who shines through me upon others.

O let me thus praise You,
in the way which You love best,
by shining on all those around me.

Teach me to show forth Your praise,
    Your truth, Your will.
Make me preach You without preaching—
    not by words,
but by example and by the catching force,
    the sympathetic influence,
    of what I do—
by my visible resemblance to Your saints,
and the evident fullness of the love
which my heart bears to You.

    Christmas Novena
HAIL, and blessed be the hour and moment
At which the Son of God was born
    Of a most pure Virgin
At a stable at midnight in Bethlehem
    In the piercing cold
At that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee,
To hear my prayers and grant my desires
    (mention request[s] here).

    Divine Infant,
after the wonders of Your birth in Bethlehem,
You wished to extend Your infinite mercy to the whole world
by calling the Wise Men by heavenly inspiration to Your crib,
which was in this way changed into a royal throne.
You graciously received those holy men
who were obedient to the divine call
    and hastened to Your feet.
They recognized and worshipped You as Prince of Peace,
    the Redeemer of mankind,
and the very Son of God.

Show us also Your goodness and almighty power.
    Enlighten our minds,
    strengthen our wills,
and inflame our hearts to know You,
to serve You, and to love You in this life,
that we may merit to find our joy in You
eternally in the life to come.

    Jesus, most powerful Child,
I implore You again to help me:

    (State your intention here...)

    Divine Child,
    great omnipotent God,
I implore through Your most Holy Mother's most powerful intercession,
    and through the boundless
mercy of Your omnipotence as God,
for a favorable answer to my prayer during this Novena.

Grant me the grace of possessing You eternally
    with Mary and Joseph
and of adoring You with Your holy angels and saints.

    Amen.

    Advent

    Advent Prayer
Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in God's own work for justice.

Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a hunger for peace: peace in the world, peace in my home, peace in myself.

Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father's joy. I seek His will so I can serve with gladness, singing and love.

Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise in me, too, sober reverence for the God who acted there, hearty gratitude for the life begun there, and spirited resolution to serve the Father and Son.

I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose advent I hail. Amen.

    Advent Prayer
Father, in the wilderness of the Jordan you sent a messenger to prepare people's hearts for the coming of your Son. Help me to hear his words and repent of my sins, so that I may clearly see the way to walk, the truth to speak, and the life to live for Him, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

    Advent Prayer
All-powerful God, increase our strength of will for doing good that Christ may find an eager welcome at his coming and call us to his side in the kingdom of heave, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    Advent Prayer
Father in heaven, our hearts desire the warmth of your love and our minds are searching for the light of your Word. Increase our longing for Christ our Savior and give us the strength to grow in love, that the dawn of his coming may find us rejoicing in his presence and welcoming the light of his truth. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

    Advent Prayer
God of power and mercy, open our hearts in welcome. Remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy, so that we may share his wisdom and become one with him when he comes in glory, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    Advent Prayer
Father in heaven, the day draws near when the glory of your Son will make radiant the night of the waiting world. May the lure of greed not impede us from the joy which moves the hearts of those who seek him. May the darkness not blind us to the vision of wisdom which fills the minds of those who find him. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

    Advent Prayer
Lord God, may we, your people, who look forward to the birthday of Christ experience the joy of salvation and celbrate that feast with love and thanksgiving. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    Advent Prayer
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, ever faithful to your promises and ever close to your Church: the earth rejoices in hope of the Savior's coming and looks forward with longing to his return at the end of time. Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope which his presence will bestow, for he is Lord for ever and ever. Amen.

Let us now pray for God's blessing in the new year.

    Remember us, 0 God;
from age to age be our comforter.
You have given us the wonder of time,
blessings in days and nights, seasons and years.
Bless your children at the turning of the year
and fill the months ahead with the bright hope
that is ours in the coming of Christ.

You are our God, living and reigning, for ever and ever.
    R. Amen.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
    where there is hatred, let me sow love;
    where there is injury, pardon;
    where there is doubt, faith;
    where there is despair, hope;
    where there is darkness, light;
    where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
    R. Amen. —St. Francis of Assisi

Great God, we sing that mighty hand
    By which supported still we stand;
    The opening year your mercy showed;
That mercy crowns it till it close.

    Against wounding
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

    A Collect for Peace
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Prayer for Mother Seton's Intercession-A Saint from New York:

    Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton

Lord God, You blessed Elizabeth Seton with gifts of grace as wife and mother, educator and foundress, so that she might spend her life in service to your people.

Through her example and prayers may we learn to express our love for you in love for our fellow men and woman.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    -From the Roman Missal

I recommend visiting the beautiful Basilica of the National

Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland were she

is buried. Here are two prayers composed by Saint Elizabeth Ann

    Seton

O Father, the first rule of Our dear Savior's life was to do Your

Will. Let His Will of the present moment be the first rule of our

daily life and work, with no other desire but for its most full and

complete accomplishment. Help us to follow it faithfully, so that

doing what You wish we will be pleasing to You. Amen.

Lord Jesus, Who was born for us in a stable, lived for us a life

of pain and sorrow, and died for us upon a cross; say for us in the

hour of death, "Father, forgive," and to Your Mother, "Behold your

child." Say to us, "This day you shall be with Me in paradise." Dear

Savior, leave us not, forsake us not. We thirst for You, Fountain of

Living Water. Our days pass quickly along, soon all will be

consummated for us. To Your hands we commend our spirits, now and

    forever. Amen.

Darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds the people, but upon you the Lord shines, and over you appears his glory.

    A Morning Prayer
I call upon you, O Lord,
and in the morning you hear me.
    In the morning I offer
    you my prayer,
    watching and waiting.
I lift my heart to you, O Lord,
to be strengthened for this day.
    Be with me in all I do, my God;
guide me in all my ways.

    I will carry some burdens today;
    some trials will be mine.
So I wait for your help, Lord,
    lest I stumble and fall.

I will do my work, Father,
the work begun by your Son.
    He lives in me and I in him;
may his work today be done.

    St.Patrick Prayers...
    I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
    Through confession of the Oneness
    Of the Creator of creation.
    I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

    I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
    In obedience of angels,
    In service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
    In the prayers of patriarchs,
    In preachings of the apostles,
    In faiths of confessors,
    In innocence of virgins,
    In deeds of righteous men.

I arise today through the strength of Heaven
    the rays of the sun,
    the radiance of the moon,
    the splendor of fire,
    the speed of lightening,
    the swiftness of the wind,
    the depth of the sea,
    the stability of the earth
    the firmness of rock.
I arise today through the power of God:
    God's might to comfort me,
    God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
    God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
    God's hand to lead me,
God's way to lie before me,
    God's shield to protect me,
God's Heavenly Host to save me
from the snares of the devil,
    from temptations to sin,
from all who wish me ill,
    from near and afar,
    alone and with others.
    May Christ shield me today
    against poison and fire,
    against drowning and wounding,
so that I may fulfill my mission
    and bear fruit in abundance.
    Christ behind and before me,
    Christ behind and above me,
Christ with me and in me,
    Christ around and about me,
Christ on my right and on my left,
Christ when I lie down at night,
Christ when I rise in the morning,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone that speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

    All things pass.
    God does not change.
    Patience achieves everything.
    Whoever has God lacks nothing.
    God alone suffices.
    Christ has no body on earth now but yours;

    no feet but yours.
    Yours are the eyes
through which the compassion of Christ
must look out on the world.
    Yours are the feet
with which he is to go about doing good.

    Prayer to Saint Blasé

O glorious Saint Blasé, who by thy martyrdom has left to the Church a precious witness to the faith, obtain for us the grace to preserve within ourselves this divine gift, and to defend, without human respect, both by word and example, the truth of that same faith, which is so wickedly attacked and slandered in these our times. Thou who didst miraculously cure a little child when it was at the point of death by reason of an affliction of the throat, grant us thy powerful protection in like misfortunes; and, above all, obtain for us the grace of Christian mortification together with a faithful observance of the precepts of the Church, which may keep us from offending Almighty God.

    Amen

1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. Love is not jealous, it does not put on airs, it is not snobbish. Love is never rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not prone to anger, neither does it brood over injuries. Love does not rejoice in what is wrong but rejoices with the truth. There is no limit to love's forbearance, to its trust, its hope, its power to endure. Love never fails. Prophecies will cease, tongues will be silent, knowledge will pass away......There are in the end three things that last: faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love..............

Love to all of you today..May you be blessed with faith, hope and love today and always...xoxo,Patti

We know that when these bodies of ours are taken down like tents and folded away, they will be replaced by resurrection bodies in heaven—God-made, not handmade… We’ve been given a glimpse of the real thing, our true home… The Spirit of God whets our appetite by giving us a taste of what’s ahead. He puts a little of heaven in our hearts so that we’ll never settle for less. – 2 Corinthians 5:1-5

    Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

    PRAYER FOR THE SICK

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the Sick, we turn to You in this time of illness. O dearest Comforter of the Troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with Your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in Your hands. We place our sick under Your care and humbly ask that You restore Your servant to health again. above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge Your holy will and know that whatsoever You do, You do for the love of us. Amen.
