The Respectfully Republican Conversation

Susie, I just spent 2 hours pulling weeds, listening to Rush. He was talking about the video above. It is amazing that all those dems can say one thing one day, and another the next. I think he should definitely air this ad. It will show their true colors.
AnneShirley, I know Rush is probably not someone you tune into, but you might like to catch his webcast today. He was going on and on about how he thinks the dems "buyers remorse" over BO is spreading and he thinks that they will end up nominating Hillary.
Say what you want about Rush, he can be crude and sexist at times, but he never ceases to amaze me when some of his crazy ideas actually come to fruition.
Shirley, you are starting to give Susie a run for her money at being our "great links locator". That last one was very interesting. I am still trying to figure out how to do more. Maybe it is my computer, but I cannot even get copy and paste to work. I have tried to post pictures but it always fails. I can fix my own computer, and have done so several times, but this one has me so frustrated.
-
Oh, I think that ad should definitely go on TV. I only saw a little piece, probably on Hannity, where Hillary speaks about McCain. IMO, that's a good'un! I'd like to see what each of those dems say about him now. LOL

Did you guys read about Obama and the tire pressure thing? I think McCain is witty in suggesting handing out tire pressure gauges labeled, "Obama Energy Plan"!! And Obama is trying to defend his remarks that he is right. Ok, so is getting a tune up and changing your air filter ... but those things are not solving our problems.
Discussing the air-pressure issue during an appearance Tuesday night, McCain said he wasn't opposed to Obama's suggestion. "And could I mention that Senator Obama a couple of days ago said that we ought to all inflate our tires, and I don't disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it, but I also don't think that that's a way to become energy independent."
Obama had noted that keeping tires inflated and cars tuned was endorsed by both NASCAR and AAA and should be part of any comprehensive plan to reduce reliance on imported oil.
In mocking Obama, McCain told a motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D.: "My opponent doesn't want to drill, he doesn't want nuclear power, he wants you to inflate your tires." The Republican National Committee widely distributed tire pressure gauges labeled "Obama energy plan" and suggested that was the Illinois senator's only idea for reducing oil imports, although both candidates have offered multifaceted energy proposals.
On Wednesday, McCain criticized Obama for not fully embracing nuclear power as part of a comprehensive energy solution. "He's out of touch," McCain said while campaigning in Ohio.

I was also reading that the oil companies are getting record profits. Of course they are, we are paying record prices!!!!!!! I so think that gas and oil should be price controlled, like not allowed to cost more than $___. In a time when the gas companies are looking to expand drilling they are also doing a record business in EXPORTING our oil.
I am sorry, I don't get how these companies can take our natural resources and give them to others and they make all the money. I know they get it out of the ground and refine it but maybe this should be a business owned by us, the citizens.
The oil execs and auto mfg's must be in bed together or the auto mfg would have come up with a better solution to this problem long ago ....
-
Susie, that's some sad commentaries by the Obamas. When he was asked the question he was stumped and had to make up something QUICK?
I read some of the responses below the videos. What is bad about America today that needs fixing that was better in years past. What time line is he referring to? When women were considered second class citizens. When blacks had to sit in the back of the bus? He's never specific.
-
I missed this page earlier. How did I do that?
Linda, Would you please read something and respond IF you don't mind since you are from Chicago.

Roctobermom, there's a place I found that breaks down how much money per gallon (I think) the oil companies profit. And, it also showed how much taxes oil companies pay. And you know these CEOs get high wages and bonuses. I'll try to find that link and let you decide. I think if the oil companies are price gouging us then something really needs to be done.

Shirley, You know I have been complaining all along that no one is getting the same stories about Obama's Chicago political cronies that we are hearing here. I hope that this book, will finally get the stories out there. His Rezko ties are a big deal, yet they are not even looked at by the main stream media. Our Govenor, another Rezko pal, is being investigated for the same kind of insider shenanigans that put our last gov. in prison. He has gotten away with things so far, but hopefully Rezko will sing and Blagoivich will be exposed. It is maddening that they sent our Rep. gov to prison at 80 years old, while the present one is getting away with the same stuff. This whole state is such a crooked mess! Now I think Gov. Ryan should have been disgraced for all his shady deals, but why do Dems get away with the same thing? And the fact that our Rep. gov. destroyed the reputation of the Rep. party in Ill. led to Obama's landslide victory for Senator. People wanted change and boy did we get it.
Here is a prime example. Watch Oprah tonight. She is doing a program on the difference between a school in Chicago and one in suburban Naperville, where I live. While she does a great job of showing how bad the kids there have it next to ours, and I really feel for those kids, it is because of the Chicago bureaucrats that they have such horrible schools. My county, because people are higher educated, and have higher incomes, contribute more to the state coffers than any other county, and we are dead last in what we get back in state funds. The reason we still have good schools, great parks, etc. is because we pay through the nose in property taxes. If I told you what my taxes are, you would probably have a heart attack. But since we are more willing to pay for good schools, we pass referendums when needed. Meanwhile, the Chicago public schools get more from the state per pupil than any other district, yet their schools are terrible. Where does the money go? There is a black hole somewhere! I'll bet Obama sends his kids to private school, like the rest of his Hyde Park neighbors, or one of the fancy magnet schools that are all over the city, not one of the poorer public schools.
Illinois is ranks about 7 or 8 as one of the richest states in the US. Our schools are the least funded of all 50. And academically we rank 48th on national standards because the Chicago schools and downstate schools are left in the dust by our state government. Several years ago, we were sold a lie. We were told that if we allowed Riverboat gambling, all the money would be used for our schools. They promised no increase in income taxes. So now we have gambling all over the state but where is the money. Well they may be using the revenue from gambling for our schools, but they no longer give the schools any other money so our schools are actually getting less than we did before. Oprah makes a good case for the differences of our schools, but I wish she had done a little more research and explained why. She makes it seem that it is all about race. There are lots of minorities in the suburbs. She just does not show them on her program.
I am lucky that I can afford to live in a county with good education, but it is maddening to see how other kids are suffering in Ill. And don't get me started on our special ed programs. With 3 special needs kids in our family, in the Chicago system ,who are constantly the victims of more budget cuts. We have great programs for autistic kids in Naperville, but my SIL cannot afford to live here, so my nephew is stuck with nothing.
Sorry this is so long. I bet you are sorry you asked, Shirley.LOL
I just hope more of this gets out there. No one from this state has any right to run this country, when all they are doing in Illinois is running it into the ground!
-
Linda--I'm sure you will get a laugh out of this from 2007.
Its a question of judgment.
-
Here is a more appropriate logo for the Obama campaign--gotta laugh at the pot calling the kettle......................
From weekly standard:
Big Oil Barack - The Logo
Apropos of Jake Tapper's scoop showing that Barack Obama receives more money from Exxon/Mobil than John McCain, blogger Jeff Dobbs of The Voice in My Head (which you should be reading every day) has come up with a logo to convey the gravity of the situation.
-
That is too funny, Susie!
Linda, ya know, when someone's "reporting" on something that big, be it Oprah or whomever, they should do some in depth studies to see what the heck is going on.
I realize it's probably like that in most schools that teach the poorer students. Do the parents in those "districts" or counties take time to go to the meetings at the school and demand better for their children? Do they meet with the teacher to find out why "Joey" is failing?
We sent our girls to private schools. And we still pay taxes. And we will as long as we own property. And we don't mind because it was our choice to send our children elsewhere. We didn't like the public schools and all the crap that went on in them. And it's even worse now. However, I now kids who went to public schools and did great. But I can tell you that their parents stayed on top of things.
Why does our local government mismanage monies that belong to the schools? It infuriates me!
You can be sure Obama sends his children to a private school.
And I'm also so darned tired of corruption within our government. Where are the good politicians? I'm beginning to think our elected officials up there on the Hill should be able to only serve an X amount of years
-
I saw my first Obama ad yesterday. He's buying the election by telling us he'll give us all $1000 bucks if we vote for him. Isn't there a law against buying votes? Probably not, since that is what the ad is saying.
What annoys me more about this ad is the fact that this is how the democrats want to fix our oil prices. They don't want to get to the root of the problem, drill to lower gas prices, no they want to pay us off instead. Everything is a pay off. I don't know if $1000 will turn enough heads for people to vote for him, but that's all the people will hear.
I can tell you from the call-in shows on the radio, they don't understand the consequences of his plan to tax small businesses at a higher rate. The very companies who they might work for, and who might have to pull in a bit, by letting people go. But they'll have their $1000.
One more thing about the ad, it's depicting McCain as being in the pocket of big oil, but McCain voted against big oil getting a tax break, and Obama voted for them getting one. How many in the general public will hear that?
And another thing, redistribution of wealth has been a pinko communist plan from way back, and how many times has it actually worked? Probably never.

By Michelle Malkin • August 8, 2008 01:38 AMOh, my. The Obama groupies have come up with their own special sign language to signal their religion to each other. Here is the worshipful new gesture that its creators want to spread across the country (”We want to see it everywhere, but more importantly we want this sign to take the world by storm”) and at the Democrat convention with the goal of presenting a “crowd of 75,000 people at Obama’s nomination speech holding their hands above their heads, fingers laced together in support of a new direction for this country, a renewed hope, and acceptance of responsibility for our future” (via US News and HA Headlines):

In my last comment, I commented on fixing my computer, AND IT CRASHED!! It was unsteady after our power outage and that was end of my hard drive. I had to buy a new hard drive, and now I have to reload everything and try to recover my old one. What a pain! I hope to catch up with you all soon!

Welcome Sherri---Nice to have your voice here.
-
Sherri, I so agree with you. Some folks are socially progressive, and some folks aren't. LOL And some folks would probably like to live in another country because of their social progressiveness and I think they should move there. LOL
Welcome.
I have never been an Edwards "liker" and I'm from N.C. I feel for his wife and especially his children. Aren't they the one's who ultimately get hurt in the end. Especially someone who's lives belong to the public.
-
This never fails, they both were a golden couple. What happens when the mighty think too highly of themselves? Usually a scandal. He had to be walking 10' above the ground to think he could still run for President with this hanging over his head. I don't know what Elizabeth could have been thinking either. This is beyond the realm of weird. I don't even know what to think about it.
-
I remember that some people were upset that he would dare decide to stay in the presidential election after knowing his wife would be fighting mets. They both came to that decision. I suppose they thought it would never be found out. I think they knew about the "money" and nice lifestyle paid to these folks. And you know the wife of the guy who claims to be the father of this child agreed to be payed off also. Heck, I'd like that kind of money. But, I can just bet that Hunter was lonely and in love and took care of that secret. Or either the Enquirer was following his butt closely.

I don't want our government running our medical care. It's bad enough that the darned insurance companies do it!
-
I don't know. If my husband came home and said he had an affair, and oh, I want to run for President again, my next question to him would be: John, do you happen to have the telephone number of the National Enquirer handy? Or do I have to go look it up myself?
I can't believe any of this. It's so out there. Of course I believe it, but I can't believe the both of them sat down to discuss his running for President, like it's normal to have a girl friend in the wings. Anyway, the Beverly Hills hotel should be naming the men's room, the John Edwards room. I'd dump my husband if he ran into one instead of walking out of the hotel with his head up.

Sherri-Welcome to the right side!
I am just trying to get a few words off during a commercial. CNN is doing a show on the clash between radical Islam and the west. They are talking about the murder of VanGogh in the Netherlands. Hope some of you can catch it.
The DVD I mentioned to you, will be in the Sunday papers tomorrow for those of you who are not in big city markets. It is called "Obsession, radical Islam's war against the west". you can also check it out at obsessionthemovie.com

Welcome aboard Sherri. We do have to be vigilant because no matter what we've heard, the Obama health care plan is not the Hillary health care plan. Can we only imagine a gov't run plan? The thought of it makes me ill. The democrats have put a health care plan in their platform, but they didn't give specifics as to what type of plan it will be, which made me laugh.
-
I cringe at the thought of our government administering universal healthcare.----Look at the problems with medicare and the Part D presciption coverage.
I am not familiar with Canada's plan---but I can't imagine that their government wouldn't have the right to negotiate prices with the drug companys. Our Veterans administration does but Medicare is not allowed; The argument is that private-sector competition has keeps prices much lower and that access to certain medications could be restricted. Obviously, this is not working.

Prices for some drugs skyrocket
By Julie Appleby, USA TODAY
Drug companies are quietly pushing through price hikes of 100% — or even more than 1,000% — for a very small but growing number of prescription drugs, helping to drive up costs for insurers, patients and government programs.
The number of brand-name drugs with increases of 100% or more could double this year from four years ago, researchers from the University of Minnesota say. Many of the drugs are older products that treat fairly rare, but often serious or even life-threatening, conditions.
Among the examples: Questcor Pharmaceuticals last August raised the wholesale price on Acthar, which treats spasms in babies, from about $1,650 a vial to more than $23,000. Ovation raised the cost of Cosmegen, which treats a type of tumor, from $16.79 to $593.75 in January 2006.
The average wholesale price of 26 brand-name drugs jumped 100% or more in a single cost adjustment last year, up from 15 in 2004, the university study found. In the first half of this year, 17 drugs made the list.
"This does drive up the price of health care," says Alan Goldbloom, president of Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. "Hospitals are either eating the cost or passing it along to insurers, so you and I are paying it in increased premiums."
Some of the drugs are administered in hospitals, which bill insurers, patients or government programs for them. Insured patients pay either a flat dollar amount, such as $20, or a percentage of the drug's cost.
Last year, prices rose about 7.4% on average for 1,344 brand-name drugs, according to Express Scripts, which manages drug benefits for large employers and insurers.
Reasons for the larger increases are varied, researchers say.
"There's no simple explanation," says Stephen Schondelmeyer, director of the PRIME Institute at the University of Minnesota, which studies drug industry economics. "Some companies seem to figure no one is watching so they can get away with it."
The price increases are drawing legal and political scrutiny:
• In a decision awaiting approval by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, drugmaker Abbott agreed last week to pay up to $27.5 million to settle a lawsuit over a 400% price increase on its HIV/AIDS drug Norvir. The price did not change.
• Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., asked the Government Accountability Office last week to investigate large price hikes. Klobuchar asked the Federal Trade Commission in April to investigate Ovation Pharmaceuticals, which raised prices on four drugs in 2006 by up to 3,437%.
Drug companies say the price hikes cover the costs of keeping the drugs on the market. They say the drugs are often less costly than alternative treatments, such as surgery or newer, high-tech medicines.
Questcor says on its website that it had to raise Acthar's price after struggling for years to "keep (it) financially viable."
Ovation says it needed to cover its 2005 purchase of the drugs and facility upgrades. "We feel we made an important investment in keeping these older products alive," says spokeswoman Sally Benjamin Young.
EXAMPLES OF RISING DRUG PRICES
Researchers found a growing number of drugs with one-time price increases of 100% or more. Some examples based on average wholesale prices:
Drug Condition Company Price before Price after % increase
Cosmegen Wilms' tumor Ovation $16.79 $593.75 3,436%
Indocin IV Heart problem in premature babies Ovation $136.10 $1,875 1,278%
Acthar Infantile spasms Questcor $1,650 $23,269 1,310%

In Canada the government doesn't negotiate prices with the drug companies, but instead has rules about how drugs can be priced. At the time that the following article was written (2003), it was estimated that
"Publicinsurance plans in Canada pay for about 44 percent of totalprescription-drug spending; private plans cover 34 percent, and patients pay the remaining 22 percent out of pocket."
The public plans include programs that cover drug costs for all patients while in hospital, and programs that cover some or all of the drug costs for the elderly, disabled and those who need assistance with the costs.
The PMPRB (Patented Medicine PricesReview Board) uses four guidelines in determining whether a drugprice is excessive:
- For most new patented drugs, the cost of therapy maynot exceed the highest cost of therapy with existing drugs usedto treat the same disease in Canada.
- For breakthrough drugs and those that offer a substantialimprovement, manufacturers can charge the median of the pricescharged for the same drug in countries listed in the PMPRB's"Regulations."
- Price increases after a product launch can not exceedthe rate of increase in Canada's Consumer Price Index.
- The price can never exceed the highest price for thedrug in the countries listed in the "Regulations."
The PMPRB can order a company it deems out of compliance withthe guidelines to reduce the price and also relinquish doubleany "excess" revenues it may have received from sales of thedrug.

Sherri,
I'm happy you told us that. It fits in with what a democratic stategist was saying on TV a few months back that Obama needed to dumb it down for us. He did not use those exact words, but he made it very plain what they think about us. They are equal opportunity offenders.
Pelosi is going to be on Larry King tomorrow night. According to Barbara Boxer, there still are no plans to address the drilling issue when they return from their holiday. I for one don't mind wearing extra clothing in my home if it will get some of these obstructionists out of congress this November, so let them do nothing this year. I know, wishful thinking.

We may want health-care reform but there are no easy answers here.
Here is a view of whats going on in Mass from The author of Placebo Journal Douglas Farrago MD----(hysterically funny magazine about docs and health-care) I've also posted the link to the Boston Globe article at the end.

How To Fool The Feds Into Paying For Your State's Socialized Healthcare System
The rest of the country has been watching to see how Massachusetts is doing with their socialized healthcare system. There have been tons of glitches including not having enough primary care doctors to treat all the "newly insured" as well as not nearly having enough money to pay for the behemoth. I also have been wondering what the state is going to do the keep the Commonwealth Care going. Now I know. The Boston Globe reports that Massachusetts is trying to get more and more from the federal government through Medicaid! It isn't unheard of for states to get waivers on how they spend some of that money but Mass is trying to funnel more and more into their new system, much of which will cover people who normally wouldn't get Medicaid in the first place. In fact, they already have been caught playing games by incorrectly listing kids under their MassHealth plan that were supposed to be on the SCHIP plan. That little mistake was done on purpose to squeeze more money out of the feds. Maybe they got greedy and saw this scam as a blueprint to do it again on a larger level. As more and more people join Commonwealth Care, the state went back to the well to find more cash to pay for it. They are now asking for $1 billion more over the next three years. I guess they figure the rest of the country should cover Massachusett's experiment with their taxes?http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2008/08/09/fourth_delay_in_care_plan_sought/

By the way--If you get a chance take a look at Bobby Jindal on This Week with George Stephanopoulis---He ran rings around Richardson's appearance. I think you are definately looking at part of a 2012 Rep ticket. Jake Tapper was also a much more evenhanded moderator sitting in for George S.

OMG...Sherri! That "dumbing down" comment does speak volumnes, that is way too funny!
