Doing Well 12 Years After DCIS

I have been thinking about how much this group meant to me when I was diagnosed DCIS and going through treatment. I am so thankful for this organization and this discussion group. I had my first mammogram in 2008 shortly after I turned 40. Went back for a follow up mammogram with no thought that it could be cancer (I assumed I had accidentally moved and the image was blurry or something). I ended up having a lumpectomy and radiation followed by 5 years of Tamoxifen. There were times, especially before and during treatment, when it felt like I would be thinking constantly about cancer for the rest of my life. I would imagine that some of you feel that way now, and I wanted to tell you that for me, at least, that was not the case. Even now, I get far more nervous about doctor's appointments than I did before, but other than that I hardly ever think about it. It is just something that happened to me a long time ago, not something that consumes me. I know everyone is not as fortunate, but I thought it might be helpful to someone to hear a report from the other side of this. You will get through this! And if you need support, this group is wonderful, and I am here to share my thoughts and provide encouragement if I can.
