Hi,

Today I was scheduled to have a core biopsy done on a 1.1 x 0.8 x 0.6cm irregular hypoechoic lesion at the 5 o’clock position rated a BIRAD 4. I had a diagnostic mammogram in November and after the mammogram the ultrasound technician came in and said there was an area of concern that was seen in the left breast at the 5 o’clock position. I have very dense breast and she definitely was applying a lot of pressure. I saw the lesion that was described above and watched her measure it as well as do a color Doppler on it which showed a little red and blue area. The lesion was small and black. I also have an older lesion in the 2 o’clock position measuring 0.7 x 0.6 x 0.4cm which has been there for 4 years and has not changed and a BIRAD 3. It is a gray in color and definitely not black like the new lesion.

Today when I went in for the biopsy the ultrasound technician came in and started scanning my breast. She was scanning more in the 3-4 o’clock area and barely applying pressure. The original ultrasound that found the lesion was scanned more in the 5-6 o’clock area and with a lot of pressure. She said she feels the image is a shadow from my Cooper ligament. The image that was on the screen looked nothing like the image I saw when I had my original ultrasound in November. It was gray and the size was different. She also stated that it was not seen on the mammogram in November. However, something was seen because that is why they did the ultrasound after the mammogram.

The radiologist looked at the images and then came in the room and scanned my breast (again not in the same area as the earlier ultrasound in November). He agreed it probably is just a shadow from the ligament and felt we didn’t need to do the biopsy.

My question is has this happened to anyone else? Is it possible they scanned the wrong area of concern? I know I’m not trained in reading ultrasounds, but I definitely know the black small area that was found in November was not on the ultrasound screen today.

I’m just nervous because a neighbor of mine was told to just keep monitoring an area of concern she had and when they finally did a biopsy it was a stage 4. Should I get a second opinion? Or is my anxiety just getting the best of me…

Thank You and sorry for the long post!

😊

I would prob get a second opinion. The worst that happens with a second opinion is they find nothing and send you on your way. (Although I don't know how your insurance works so maybe you pay? So prob the worst is you pay and they find nothing).

You already know the worst that happens if it's cancer and it's missed.

I would ask the radiologist involved in the latest scan- or did you do that and point out the discrepancy? And I would get a second opinion. Get a copy of the reports from the diagnostic mammogram and first ultrasound and bring them.
