Wondering what something means

About a month ago, I had some bloody nipple discharge and some swelling in my right breast. I was sent in for a mammogram and ultrasound. The tests show a 5mm likely benign mass and some evidence of ductal ecstasia - overall - pretty good finding.

However, they incidentally did a mammogram on my left breast as well, and I’m confused by the wording. I cannot find anything anywhere that is worded this way and it’s causing me some concern - “focal nodular density measuring 10mm” any help with this would be appreciated!

In the left mammogram, there is a focal nodular

density measuring 10 mm

maximum diameter in the lower inner quadrant.

Page: 1 of 2

OPINION:

Ovoid focal nodular density in the lower inner quadrant of

the left breast, as

described.

BI-RADS RIGHT: 2

BI-RADS LEFT: O

RECOMMENDATIONS;

Left breast spot compression mammograms and targeted left

breast ultrasound. An

appointment will be offered to the patient in this regard.

    BIRADS 0 for the left means more imaging is required because they can't tell what they're looking at. The language they use is to communicate with the next radiologist that this was the location of the thing they saw (lower inner quadrant) and what type of thing they saw (focal nodular density). It just means it's an area that appeared denser than the rest of the tissue and they need to see if it's really something there or just a glitch in how the mammogram was taken.

    hth!
