Port Removal Question
Hi Everyone
Did anyone have local anesthesia to remove the port? How long was the procedure? Was it painful? My surgeon is giving me a choice of sedation or local anesthesia and I am trying to decide if I can handle local
Thank you in advance

Hey AB! Hope you're doing well. I had my port out about 6 weeks ago; it was easy. I had local anesthetic and it didn't hurt at all. There was some "tugging" since some scar tissue had formed around the port, but they pulled it out and put a couple of stitches in and I was good to go.

AWWW LW422 I am so glad to hear from you! Well it sounds like this may be completely doable..I hope the procedure is short? Are you on the mend?
Wishing u the Best and Thanks for answering my question

Girl, I had my LAST radiation treatment yesterday and I'm done!! MO has released me and I don't have to go back until February!! Hope you're doing well, too.
The port procedure was pretty easy; they put a kind of cover over my head so I couldn't see what was happening, lol. It didn't hurt and probably took less than 30 minutes. One other thing to consider if you have twilight sedation they will probably require you to have someone with you to drive you home.

Whooo hoooo...looks like we may on the same timeline. After port removal, I don't go back until February. This will be for a scan...please keep me updated from time to time on how you are..Sending hugs and well wishes

Will do! We'll have to check on each other. Take care! I'm so happy for you. Hugs back!

I had mine taken out under sedation and that's what I wanted. My port had been in for a year so I doubt it would have been easily done with a local. But you, I'm a big chicken!

I had mine removed after several years with sedation. But it was only something like Propofol that they use for colonoscopies. Quick & easy - but yes you'll need a ride home.

I had my port removed 11/12/21 after 6 months of having it. I had a local anesthetic. The procedure to remove it was very quick. Definitely less than 20 minutes. They did have a translucent blue drape over me! I could feel a little tugging. The surgeon told me how things were progressing. I was asked how I was doing and if I felt any discomfort. That spot was sore afterward, so I took a couple of acetaminophen when I got home. It is healing well, a little itchy - I am happy to be port free!

I had mine removed under general anesthesia because I'm a needle phobe and the biopsies freaked me out when they were just done in his office with a local. I understand most do the local and in the office. I have no regrets that I was totally out for mine getting removed.

ThreeTree, I feel the same way. No way did I want to know anything.

Thanks Everyone...Port removal completed with local anesthesia. Def way worse in my head than it actually was...now off for some rest...🤾♂️

Cowgirl13 - So glad I'm not alone in all my fears! Thanks for adding that you feel similarly.
AB45 - Glad it's all over and wasn't difficult for you.
