Discordant fibroadenoma?

Hey guys. I’ve recently had 2 breast biopsies, a stereotactic on the left for calcifications and an US guided core needle biopsy on the right for a 1cm lump I found in the shower. The report on the calcifications was benign, something called PASH. The lump on the right came back a fibroadenoma. My surgeon called it complex fibroadenoma, and said she wants it out because the results were “discordant.” I know my mammogram, US, and MRI of the right breast was BIRADS 4, but I was relieved when the biopsy came back and said fibroadenoma. Do they routinely surgically excise lumps that turn out to be benign just to be safe or is there a legit chance this is not actually a fibroadenoma or is a FA but has cancer inside or something? I feel like I’ve been on a rollercoaster since August and I’m just desperate to know once and for all. Surgery is this upcoming Friday.

Thanks

I had the same issue many years ago. I had a needle biopsy done and the radiologist sounded convinced that it was cancer. It came back as a fibroadenoma and I then met with a surgeon. He suggested that, instead of excising it, we watch it for a couple of years. I had regular ultrasounds but nothing changed. So I was released from the surgeon’s care. I truly believe it had nothing to do at all with my diagnosis years later of BC, just one of those weird things.

If it's discordant and the surgeon recommends removal it's probably a good idea to remove it. The chances of cancer inside a fibroadenoma are very small, about .001%, but it does happen (happened to me). They just want to be sure.
