Lumpectomy tomorrow - What to expect

My wife is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. She was diagnosed with DCIS with possible microsinvasion. The invasive part is less than 1mm so they are not sure if this is microinvasion or the edge of a larger invasive component. Tumor is grade 1. Her ER is 100% positive, PR is 40% positive and HER is 0 negative. My question is what is likely to be the result? We are on pins and needles.

I’m sorry that your wife finds herself in this position. The likely result? None of us have crystal balls and none of us can predict what the surgical pathology will show, so it would not be at all appropriate for any of us to guess. What you know right now as a result of the biopsy might not change or it might change. I know this is terribly stress inducing but the surgical path report will be the bottom line and drive treatment decisions. Take care and best of luck to your wife with surgery.

We truly feel you and your wife’s fear and anxiety. We have all been there. I had a lumpectomy in 2011. My BC was IDC, Stage 1b, Grade 1. I had 33 radiation treatments and took Tamoxifen for 5 years. My point is I’m here alive and well

As the lady before me posted the surgical path will tell you what you need to know.

There is no way to tell you guys not to worry because of course you will but do know that whatever it turns out to be it’s manageable and treatable.

I agree. I was diagnosed with Stage 1 before surgery. At surgery they found positive lymph nodes and I went into advanced stage breast cancer. The surgical pathology will dictate the treatment plan..the surgery itself for lumpectomy was not as bad as I had in my head..I also had axillary dissection so I had drains when I woke up from surgery..hopefully there will be no surprises at surgery...Best of luck during this part of the journey...Hugs...

Your mind may be more at ease if you focused on ways to keep her comfortable post lumpectomy. The pathology takes a while to get back. Mine took two and a half weeks. The breast surgeon may be kind and let you know how they felt it might turn out, but it's usually a wait for those results. Hopefully, her report comes out sooner. Take it one day at a time. I found that trying to predict outcomes made me anxious and I couldn't focus on my family as much as I should be.

Recently diagnosed, I will undergo a lumpectomy in 2 days and yes, moments of high anxiety can easily overcome my familiar, well-worn ways to manage stress. I am only just discovering this online community and hope it can be as beneficial to me as it appears to be for others. As I embark on this journey, perhaps someday I can offer advice, support and words of comfort as well.

I had my lumpectomy today. For me it was nothing-- a Tylenol and Celebrex before the procedure and nothing since and no pain. I can understand the worry about the outcome of the stages, pathology, treatment. But so far her diagnosis doesn't sound very alarming. It's easy to do your own research, and it's helped me understand my diagnosis and ask better questions when I see the doctor. Breastcancer.org is the best.
