Anxious about endocrine therapy

Options

I had little anxiety about the surgery for [HER negative, hormone positive] breast cancer. I had a small invasive ductal carcinoma [1..5 cm] and DCIC in the right breast and ADH in the left breast - this was my 8th biopsy since my 30’s - so I opted for a bilateral mastectomy. Sentinel nodes were clear.

I have been reading materials on the internet about endocrine therapy and the potential side effects and I have not worked up the courage to take the meds. I want to be able to bike and hike and enjoy life andI fear diminishing my quality of life just as I have retired. I have a friend with osteoporosis, who has suffered numerous broken bones and necrosis of the jaw after taking meds to combat this. Am I over thinking this and assuming the worst? Are the experiences with this therapy as bad as it sounds

    trulysilver,

Although you are smart to research, please remember that not everyone gets severe side effects. Yes, some people do. Many experience milder side effects that can be managed. I have been on aromatase inhibitors for 10 years. I have joint and some bone pain but I manage with Aleve and cannabis at night. I also stay active which is very helpful. I watch my calcium and Vitamin D levels. I recently retired but taught first grade for 10 years after my dx while on these drugs. I might not be able to climb Mt. Everest but it’s hardly stopped me from doing most everything else

ONJ is more likely a side effect of a bone strengthening drug, not the anti hormonal drugs. I will tell you what I’ve said to anyone who has expressed hesitation over these drugs. Try and if you have bad se’s you can stop. Take care

Tamoxifen strengthens bones if you want an alternative to AIs, but some people have negative side effects with it, too. You'd need more gyn monitoring on it, though. There are a LOT of AIs, and most MOs will work with you to find the one that gives you the least problems.
