Stereotatic biopsy for posterior and deep calcifications

Hi All,

I got a mammogram birads 4 at MD Anderson as they found course calcifications (increased since past mammogram). I'm not optimistic with what the outcome will be, but so far dealing ok.

But I am super scared with the stereotactic biopsy. The calcifications were found in the posterior (11cm from the nipple) and deep (very close to the chest wall)... which, as far as I read it is super painful and not the best type of biopsy for this type of location (specially with dense breasts).

I'm glad I am in a very good place to treat in case they find something, but for the biopsy seems they don't offer any type of anxiety med or sedation, so it is mainly you with a local anesthetic. And I'm almost sure I'm going to faint! My blood pressure is already sky high due to the fear of what life will be.

Any advices? Anyone went thru the same procedure for posterior calcifications in the chest wall (or close to it)?

I understand the whole journey is already so painful, why they cannot help this to be a bit more light?

Brazilgirlintexas, I had a stereotactic biopsy due a tumor close to the chest wall. The greater challenge was holding still. The local anesthesia was totally effective and the biopsy was not painful. The staff were very supportive, which of course helped.

If you feel the need for anti anxiety meds (and many do so you would have lots of company), ask for them. Also, don't believe everything you read! Your experience will be yours, not mine or anyone else's.

    Hi Beavertx,

You are my saint! I understand the experiences will vary, really hope goes well.

I asked them about anxiety meds and they said they dont do it… really hope for things to go smooth tomorrow. Then I can focus on clearing my mind until the actual results.

    It is sooo hard!

Hi brazilgirl! Check with your primary care about one or two antianxiety meds. Truly just tell them one or two and I'd be surprised if they said no (to a benzo type). If they do then ask for something like Vistaril which is used for anxiety though is an antihistamine - your PCP hopefully will make sure that is an appropriate med, interaction effects, etc..... for you.... I did not have a biopsy close to the chest wall though have had 3 stereotactic biopsies. Honestly my neck and ribs hurt the most... pretty bad actually. Ask for a little cushion for the table. They will numb you up really good. Let them know if you feel any discomfort and they will numb you more though they will know their stuff. Afterwards, ice, ice, ice often the next 24 hours or so to help with discomfort, etc. You will do fine with the procedure... it's all the waiting that is so difficult.... Let us know how things go and once you get results.

brazilgirll - I couldn't possibly stay still without a low dose Zanax. Mind you - a biopsy & an MRI and a PET/CT are the ONLY times I take one, but definitely required for me. Yes - do check with your PCP. Or GYN. Or another doc.

    Hi Ladies,

I tried to get an appointment for today but all were booked. My biopsy is tomorrow so I hope I can get thru it without fainting.

My blood pressure is already sky high due to the fear and stress. Hope at least to get some answers.

I update you all tomorrow 😭🙏

I had very small but dense breasts and my mass was pretty much right on the chest wall. The biopsy procedure wasn't painful but due to the density the doctor had to really push to get to the tumor. So be potentially prepared for that possibility. Again, didn't hurt just kind of was exhausting. Looking back, I think something to relax me a bit would have helped tremendously. Just speak up to your physicians and let them know your anxiety and concerns. I think sometimes we try and not be a bother (which we aren't we just feel what we feel) so communication is key for you. Best of luck on the procedure I hope it goes smoothly.
