Not sure how old you're looking for, but I had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction when I was 58. I recovered really well; probably better than many younger women. I was dancing in high heels at five weeks out.

It's a big surgery, but I highly recommend the procedure, as long as you find an extremely qualified microsurgeon.

Feel free to message me if you have more questions.

Wow. I’m considering going flat because of the recovery tim. I’m a horseback rider and I’m concerned about loss of core strength. Tell me more.

I am happy to hear the positive result of diep in your case, terrific!

I have the best surgeon, but am worried of the long surgery as I am 72 years off age.

Concerned about anesthesia for 5-6 hrs.

I am good health, but worry of effect on brain, being out for so long

I am also really interested in hearing responses to this question as I am 66 with plans to have a PBMX with Diep reconstruction. I am very active but have concerns about the post op recovery. It is difficult to find any statistics about seniors and mastectomy recovery, etc. Due to the pandemic my surgery is on hold which is providing me more time to do research and possibly change my mind about the surgery and reconstruction. I’m clear though that if I do have the surgery I would do diep and not implants. I am Brca2+ and have only known for three years, presently doing surveillance.
