BIRAD 5, looking for hope.

hello, I'm new here. I'm a 35 year old mother of 2 year old twin girls. I was categorized a BIRAD 5 after my diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound yesterday. Unfortunately I still have to wait another 6 days for a biopsy of several masses they found in my breast and my lymph nodes and of course several days for results (over a holiday weekend!) I feel lucky that I found a mass myself as I've never been good at keeping up with self exams and hadn't had a breast exam at the doctors in years due to pregnancy and nursing for 13 months. I guess what I'm looking for is positive news after a BIRAD 5. Anyone out there come back benign? I feel like I can't breathe, I'm terrified of what could happen. I know there is a lot of treatment out there and positive outcomes but I'm just so sad thinking about how an illness could take away the joy of my daughter's childhood from me, and them. Gosh I don't even know what I'm asking, I'm just looking for some hope, I guess.

I'm sorry that you are in this situation. I understand how stressful, worrying and paralysing it can be, especially while you wait for testing and results.

I can only welcome you and assure you that this site is your life line and support group. As you wait, I know you might be frantic and search for information elsewhere. I can confirm this is the only place you need to visit.

There is a very small chance that birads 5 could be benign, but it is most likely cancer. (95% that it’s cancer.) The good news is that when caught early, there is a strong chance they can cure you. There are a lot of treatment options for breast cancer; they aren’t all pleasant, and with your age you should mentally prepare yourself for the possibility that you will need chemo, but whatever treatment you need, it will almost certainly not be as bad as you imagine.

This is the hardest part. Once you know more it starts to get easier. And if it turns out that you do have cancer, you will get through it. The phrase we have here is “you don’t have to be brave, you just have to show up.” Good luck. This site is a wealth of resources an many people will likely chime in. Feel free to ask questions as you have them or just share your feelings.

I would add that even if it comes back not benign it could be DCIS which is non-invasive.... that would be next best case scenario..... sending gentle hugs and support.... Please let us know when you hear on results...
