Just had my biopsy. Have a question about DCIS prospective
Hi. Just got back home from a stereo core needle biopsy. The radiologist said that her estimate is that 80% it will be benign but 20% it will be DCIS.
Just to keep my expectations in line, has anyone been said the same and then it came back as something more scary? Can a calcifications be really a tiny tumor hiding in plain sight?I am very very worried so not sure if I should get myself ready for a rare case of “Stage 3" or similar
Also, if it is DCIS, do people have chemo with it? It is non-invasive, right? So is it surgery only? Or did your doctors insist on chemo and radiation?
I am usually “wait and see" and “avoid medical interventions if possible" kind of person so this whole experience is really messing with my head.
Thank you!

i had DCIS and after that surgeon sent me for 2 more biopsies because he wanted to be sure that other calcifications(in the same breast where DCIS was found and other breast) did not mean any cancer hiding there.
When i came for those 2 biopsies radiologist said: no, you are very low risk for those 2, it looks not like DCIS at all.
I was so grateful for those words. And she was correct: both biopsies came back benign.
What i am trying to say: radiologist can predict the outcome even before biopsy result is in.
So believe if you were told 80% it is benign.
with DCIS i had lumpectomy and radiation. No chemo. Now I am taking AI drug for 5 years.
Good luck!

Thank you for your response. I tried to fight her and not have a biopsy at all so not sure how that affected her estimates
Chemo just scares me so so much so good to know you didn’t have to have it. -
If it is DCIS with no invasive component, there wouldn't be any chemo. Depending on the scope of the DCIS and your preferences, you might have either a lumpectomy or more extensive mastectomy. If you have lumpectomy, most likely you would also have radiation. There are a lot of pages in breastcancer.org on these treatments and I'll refer you there for some primer. Also of course you're welcome to ask questions here. Until you have more information/results, it will help if you keep your questions in this thread, so people can continue to answer, knowing what the history is.
My best to you. Please let us know what you find out.
