Hi everyone,

I am 49 y/o mom of 4. No prior cancer or breast health issues. I have breast implants, under the muscle. My last mammogram was 4 years ago. There is a history in my family of breast cancer. Both of my Aunts on my father’s side had breast cancer & double mastectomies. I had a mammogram recently & from what me & my anxiety interpret, it looks like they want me to come back for an ultrasound because they found something 1.2 cm & 9mm in size in my right breast. Also, my breasts are classified as dense. I sent my doctor a message to explain the results but it might be a couple of days before I hear back. Can anyone help explain if this is fairly common or if you’ve been through this? Thanks so much! Mich

Below is the radiology report:

BILATERAL DIGITAL SCREENING MAMMOGRAM SEQUENTIAL: 7/24/2021

CLINICAL: Routine Mammo.

Comparison is made to exam dated: 5/11/2017 Kaiser

Radiology.

Both breasts are heterogeneously dense, which may obscure small masses.

Bilateral breast implants are stable.

There is a 1.2 cm asymmetry in the right breast middle depth lateral region seen on the craniocaudal view only.

There also is a 9 mm asymmetry in the right breast anterior depth central to the nipple seen on the craniocaudal view only.

No other significant masses, calcifications, or other findings are seen in either breast.

IMPRESSION: INCOMPLETE: NEEDS ADDITIONAL IMAGING EVALUATION

The 1.2 cm asymmetry in the right breast middle depth lateral region seen on the craniocaudal view only appears indeterminate. Spot compression, rolled lateral, and rolled medial views as well as a possible ultrasound are ordered.

The 9 mm asymmetry in the right breast anterior depth central to the nipple seen on the craniocaudal view only appears indeterminate. Spot compression, rolled lateral, and rolled medial views as well as a possible ultrasound are ordered.

Disposition and Responsibility
A letter with these results will be sent to the patient by the Mammography Department.

Hi. It is common to get called back for pictures and probably an ultra sound. They want to get different spot views of the asymmetries for a better determination. Hopefully it will turn out fine. Good news is at least you didn't get sent right to a biopsy. So, more images is good. Let us know how it goes. Good luck.
