Biopsy in morning—would love your insight

Hello Everyone,

Newbie here. I am a 46 year old mom of 3 boys. In June 2020 during a routine breast ultrasound (ordered along w/ mammo because of my breast density) a mass was discovered. This was not seen on the mammogram, only ultrasound. The description at that time was an 8x5x3 circumscribed, hypoechoic mass, appearing to have a fatty hilum, demonstrating central vascular flow. Intramammary lymph node suspected. Birads 3. F/u in 6 months.
In January of this year I repeated the left breast ultrasound and the results were: stable, well-defined, oval, hypoechoic nodule w/ no internal vascularity noted. Possibly fibroadenoma or lymph node. 7x4x3. Birads 3. F/u in 6 months.

On Tuesday of this week I followed up with another ultrasound and mammo and the radiologist said the mass is now slightly larger and more angular and she wants to biopsy it. I have yet to receive the report in my patient portal. I am not certain if it was again only seen on ultrasound and not mammo. Was hoping to post more info, but that is all I know right now.

Does anyone have a similar story? I'd love all of your good, bad and ugly similar experiences. Of course I'm worried, but am trying to take a day at a time and not get ahead of myself.

Bostn911 - I am also 46 and recently diagnosed (June 2021). I had dense breasts as well and almost always ended up having to get Ultrasound onsite after mammogram images. I had one spot on right that they monitored with repeat visits every 3 months for a year- didn't grow and considered likely benign. I then had some focal asymmetry on left and a spot they wanted to monitor BIRADs 3 (Dec 2019), but I didn't know what that meant at the time and the pathologist at the time said she was considering it likely benign and to come back in a year. With COVID, I did not have a mammogram in Dec 2020. Had one June of 2021 w/ Ultrasound onsite and left was BIRADs 5. They found at least 2 masses and 7CM of DCIS. They biopsied 3 spots on left + 2 lymph nodes. I received results within a day or so- malignant IDC + confirmed DCIS. The biopsy itself was pretty painless. The doc numbed everything up well enough and checked in with me throughout. I had a lot of bruising but it all subsided pretty quickly. The hardest part was knowing that the biopsies would likely confirm the diagnosis and I cried before the procedure because of that. It is hard not to get ahead of yourself, but I found this forum and research on procedures, timing of results and outcomes very helpful.

Hi Bostn! Wishing you well with the biopsy! You're best trying not to get too far ahead of where you are and what you know. It's natural to do it anyways though good idea to bring yourself back to the present. Please let us know how things go and certainly once you receive results....

The biopsy itself went fine. Not the most pleasant thing in the world, but I’ve had worse ;-)

The results loaded in my portal Tuesday afternoon (biopsy was Saturday morning). I was an absolute wreck for 5 hours until I could bring myself to peek at it.

Diagnosis is fibroepethelial lesion, favors fibroadenoma. I did a bunch of reading about it and learned that such lesions can also be phyllodes tumors. I plan to discuss it with my doctor and find out how conclusive “favors fibroadenoma” is.

Good news for now, although two new masses were also detected. Evidently the one they biopsied was the only worrisome one at this point. The other are being followed.
