Camping after Double Masectomy

Hello,

I am scheduled for a double masectomy on Monday. If all goes well, is it realistic to consider a camping trip 4 weeks later? We have a camper so cleanliness isn't a huge concern. I will of course ask my surgeon after the surgery. Just wanted to see what others have experienced for recovery.

Sure. Why not? If your drains are out, with no other issues?

That is what I was thinking as well. But my generally laid back hubby is in overprotective mode.

I’m going camping next week. My surgery was May 10. I could definitely have gone camping this week.

I traveled to Mexico for a wedding 6 weeks after my surgery with the full blessing of my plastic surgeon. It truly depends on how you feel and approval from your medical team. Of course you will still have some restrictions on activities but the stress relief of getting away will be worth it for you. Everyone heals at a different rate, so you may have to make a close to game time decision.

I wouldn't plan a high stakes, long, or nonrefundable trip. I only had a lumpectomy and I actually did extremely low impact travel for a wedding shortly after, but in the weeks after that was dealing with seromas that I had to go get drained by a nurse.

Basically I think there's a good chance you'll be fine, but you might still have to be dealing with stuff that could make the trip less appealing, and it would be better not to put yourself in a stressful position to have to decide that. Also if there are any surprises on the pathology that require follow up treatment.

I think that most people are doing well six weeks post op. Yes, there could be unexpected glitches but I believe that travel is great, soul soothing medicine, so plan away but do leave open the possibility that you might have to change your plans though you probably won’t! Planning fun activities and looking forward to the future is also a great healing balm! Take care.

Thanks everyone! I will keep the camping trip on the schedule and see how I am doing. Having you all share your experiences gives me hope that I will be able to do go.
