Long Term Disability question for Ontario (Canadian) resident

Options

Hi,

I'm hoping someone might have a similar situation to mine or might know about this subject. Sorry it is so long.

If you look at my diagnosis you will see this is my 2nd time around with breast cancer, both identical type, same side. I had a double mastectomy (March 9th) and am still in some pain. I am currently doing Taxol (12 rounds done weekly and a year of Herceptin).

I was thinking I was going to go back to work (and tried to 2 weeks after surgery), but driving was impossible, pain was very bad and mentally I was a mess). Although Taxol isn't as bad as AC, I do suffer from side effects, and I am still stressed, anxious and depressed (seeing a Psychologist, Psychiatrist and on sleeping pills and other pills).

I am currently collecting employment insurance sick benefits (maximum of 120 days), and if I don't go back to work, will go on long term disability.

What I want to know is will my LTD carrier make my life hell trying to collect, what have others found? To be honest I do NOT want to return to my job, it is horribly stressful, all negativity and makes me anxious and I don't sleep. I believe my job caused my cancer. I am going to be 63 years old, and not sure what will happen (I can't afford to retire)

Please any advise.

Hi there. I’m also from Ontario (Hamilton) but I don’t have strong knowledge of LTD. But I’m wondering if there is a financial navigator at the cancer centre to help you? I had to speak with one when I needed my meds covered. Maybe they could help with this as well. I really hope you don’t have to go back to that job

    Hi Dutchiegirl,

I did reach out, but unfortunately she couldnt really help. She did say that my LTD carrier obviously will do their best to try to deny the claim since that is in the companies best interest.

    Thanks for reaching out!
