I’m sure it’s nothing but it’s still scary
My doctor noticed a lump in my breast at my annual checkup and scheduled an ultrasound. She told me because I’m 25 it’s probably just a cyst. Turns out it’s definitely not a cyst. The results of the ultrasound are BIRADS 4a and I’m currently waiting for the hospital to schedule my biopsy. Here are the results of my ultrasound:
- 3.7 x 1.7 x 5.7 cm slightly heterogeneous solid hypoechoic lobular mass with some internal septations.
- 6 o’clock position, 1 cm inferior to right nipple
What do we think? I’ve read though a lot of this forum and can’t find a lot of any of those “key words”, at least together. I understand that each case is different but any insight into what your experiences have been? My doctor hasn’t been very helpful and it’s just like “you’re young, it’s fine” but also was convinced this was a cyst before and now it’s not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

a birads 4a is more likely benign than not so that is great. My main thought is how fantastic it is that they did a clinical breast exam on a 25 year old. I hope you get benign news and don't have to wait too long.

I'm surprised your doctor thought it would be a cyst - in very young women (teens, 20s), a fibroadenoma is much more common. Fibroadenomas are solid benign masses. I had one when I was 16 and another when I was 20.
I'm certainly not an expert but I believe the description you noted would be consistent with a fibroadenoma. And a BI-RADs 4A means that the radiologist has assessed the risk that this mass might be cancer at 10% or less. So I don't think you should worry - of course anything is possible, but the odds are very much in your favor that this will be benign.
Good luck with the biopsy!

I think it’s probably fibroadenoma too but I wish my doctor would’ve explained that to me. Instead I’ve been googling like crazy and have been up and down with emotion. Thanks for your reply!

I’m hoping for benign news too! Nervous for the biopsy but I’ll feel better once this is all over with. Honestly, at 25 anything to do with my breasts had never crossed my mind. This has definitely been an eye opening experience!

Sn94 the odds are definitely with you given your age and the 4a classification that this mass is benign. I also know that those words only bring mild comfort, you will not be ok until you receive your results back. Kuddos to you for watching yourself, and pursuing answers. I wish you all the best and a lovely benign result!

Good luck with biopsy and results, sn94! We know sometimes it is not easy, but try not to worry too much about it.
