Round 2 - Here we Go!

Options

Been diagnosed with a left breast Stage 1a IDC, 9mm, ER+, PR+ and HER2-. 7 years ago I had a left breast Stage 1a IDC 2mm also ER+, PR+ and HER2-. Last time they did a lumpectomy with intraoperative radiation and hormonal therapy. Just saw the breast surgeon yesterday and she is recommending another lumpectomy (which will include removal of the scar tissue from the prior IORT) and sentinal node biopsy with a bilateral reduction (which is a good thing) followed by whole breast radiation and hormonal therapy. I'm good with this plan.

I asked my oncologist about chemotherapy certain that she would say I did not need it (I did not need it last time and it seems like my diagnosis this time is nearly identical to last time), but she said she needed to wait until after the surgery to make that determination. That scares me. I really don't want to go through chemo. Anyone have any idea what might be seen in my cancer that would lead to a need for chemo given my current diagnosis? Thanks for your thoughts.

Until you get a post-surgical Oncotype score, there's no way to predict if you'd need chemo or not. Plus you don't know if some of your nodes will light up and need to be removed and sent through pathology. Good luck!
