CBD Oil Questions

I have been dealing with some pain in my back for nearly a year (not cancer) and some chemo related neuropathy. It has improved some but still not where I need it to be for doing certain things, including walking for any distance. I am only 57. I think that the Faslodex that I am on has caused degenerative issues that were not bothering me before to bother me quite a bit now. I wanted to try CBD oil to see if that would help. I have started to research if CBD oil is safe to take and I found out that it can interact with some of our medications that we may be on, including Ibrance and statins much the same as grapefruit. I wondered if others who have researched CBD oil might have some insight on safe use? How do you use it? Do I need to do a topical instead of an internal, etc.?

    Hi cowgal,

I can offer only a bit of personal experience. Before you try any CBD/THC product please check with your doctor about possible interactions with any meds you currently take. Even if you don’t live in a legal state, it’s important to run it by your doctor.

CBD can be derived from hemp or cannabis, two related plants. Hemp derived CBD is available in many places from the Internet to local markets. It contains no THC and without THC it is not psychoactive. CBD derived from cannabis, even when there is no THC in the formulation, is still considered cannabis and states have varying laws concerning its legal sale.

I live in a legal state and have always purchased through a dispensary. I found the recommendations of the bud tenders very helpful when I started. For me, having a bit of THC in the product works best for pain relief. You can purchase formulations which contain higher amounts of CBD and just a small amount of THC, so you won’t feel high. Products come in almost any form imaginable from smoking to candy, drinks, popcorn etc. Topicals are also available in a variety of forms. Topicals do absolutely nothing for me, but many folks find them to be great.

Whatever you choose, you may need to do a bit of self experimentation. All the best to you and I hope you find relief soon.

    Hi cowgirl,

I have read that CBD oil interferes with the clearance of ibrance out of your system. I have also read it's safe to take in small quantities. I found a fb group that discusses using cbd and the oils for breast cancer. There is a lot of good information on their group page. Search groups for "fighting breast cancer with cannabis". They have several recommendations for nurses who can help tell you which oil would benefit you. I was going to schedule an appointment with one of the nurses but got sidetracked.

Added: I've also read thc oil can cause progression in er\pr+ bc.

Hmmm = interesting. My doctor has always said if I can get THC and it helps, go for it.

    Simone,

Do you have a source for the info on CBD causing progression in ER/PR + bc? I am not saying this is the case, but there is a paucity of science based research on cannabis and it’s by products because in the US it is federally illegal so there are still a lot of obstacles to research and research dollars. My personal experience is that what a lot of people have to say about cannabis, myself included, is experiential and anecdotal. I find this frustrating since there is potential for medicinal usesand sometimes I get tired of being my own research subject!

    vbishop,

When I was first dx’ed cannabis was only medically legal in my state. During one of my early mo visits, my mo suggested I speak to the social worker on staff who could help with with any support services I might need. The first thingshe said ? “Let’s get you set up with a medical marijuana card in case you need it.” My younger dd was with me, she was about 20 at the time, I thought she would fall out of her chair!

    exbmxgrl,

Thc oil not cbd oil. The fb group I posted has some information on the thc oil not being good for er\pr+. The information is posted by the nurse who specializes in cannabis.

Edited to add: I am reading more on this in the fb group, and the problem seems to be with the higher doses.

Thanks for the information exbrnxgrl and Simone80. I do my yearly labs with my PCP next week and I am going to check with him to see if he thinks I can do the CBD tincture. My MO said he was okay with me trying it if would help with my pain.
