Hi, new to this,, really anxious and very scared. Over 10 years ago I had a firboradenoma removed and was told there was 2 little ones not worried about but to keep an eye on. I was too scared to go back but decided to have a mammogram this year. Same breast where I had surgery and where the little ones were, was the focus and a score of 4a. They said because they had nothing to compare these tests to is the reason why I am being called back. Had a screening mamo, then spot compression mamo, ultrasound done. Now I have an apt with the breast surgeon on Feb. 23rd. really scared. The receptionist said I was so low on the birads scale to now worry. I was also told by my Dr. that it is only the radiologist that gives the score and it could go either way up or down. So I feel like I did this to myself, should have gone in for regular mammograms. So scared of not being here for my sons and grandchildren. So not sure how to feel right now. Like I am in jail.

    thankyou.

A Birads 4a is a 10% or less chance of being cancer. Very low suspicion suspicion scale. Starting now, always obtain copies of your radiology reports and imaging so you can give new providers copies. My guess if that there were old films from first go round to show stability they might not even be doing biopsy. They very well might say, yeah, those have been there forever and haven’t changed. They just can’t confirm what your normal is

Thank-you. I am just new to this birads scale, never had that said to me before when I had my surgery, so I am assuming the first go around 10 years ago, screening, ultrasound and then biopsy(well I wanted it removed because I hate needles which they did) would have been the same score.

Hi auratba, and welcome to Breastcancer.org!

We're so sorry for the worries that bring you here, but we're really glad you've found us. You're sure to find our Community an amazing source of information, advice, and support while you wait for answers.

To help understand what a BI-RADS score means for you, check out the main Breastcancer.org site's page on Mammogram Results: Breast Imaging Reporting and Database System (BI-RADS).

It does seem, as MelissaDallas has observed, that the reason they called you back is because you didn't have a "baseline" mammogram in recent years to compare this set of results to. This is very common to have a callback in this situation -- further testing requested just to make sure there are no changes that the mammogram didn't pick up. Don't beat yourself up about not being diligent in recent years about your screening -- now you have a starting point, and it's good practice to keep your records and continue to be diligent about your breast health, getting yearly mammograms and keeping an eye on any changes.

Let us know how your appointment with the surgeon goes and what your results are. We'll be sending good thoughts your way!

You don't even know what's going on yet, the chances are that it's harmless firbroadenomas, and you're already thinking the worst and blaming yourself! Please don't do that! There's nothing any of us do or have done to cause anything in our breasts.

Thank you for your responses, I have an apt with the breast clinic on Feb. 23rd, the receptionist said if it was really urgent they would have had me earlier. I just don't know how accurate the birads scale is. This is what is scaring me and the fact that if I have a biopsy that it will push the score up. Sorry, the anxiety is so great, my dr gave me ativan when is like giving a baby aspirin to someone with a migraine..

If you have a biopsy it will not have a birads score. The birads is used by imaging to try to give a numerical assessment of the odds that something is malignant. A biopsy will tell you either way what it is.

hang in there. whatever it is, you'll deal with it then. No regrets, just keep eyes and feet moving forward.

Well, tomorrow morning is my apt , consultation with the breast clinic, really scared, no sleep for a month. Hopefully the birads score of 4a will be in my favor of being something b9.

    thanks,

    b
