Areola Turns White then Returns to Normal

I noticed last night as I was getting ready for bed that my left areola turned white and got firm and kind of lumpy for a few minutes before returning to normal. The same thing happened this morning as I was getting dressed. My initial thought is that it was reacting to the cold since it was chilly in the room and it returned to normal fairly quickly.

What has me a little concerned though is that it only happened on the left side. I had surgery on both sides, but my left side has been slower to heal and there has been a wound next to my areola the entire time. It’s healing okay and the plastic surgeon hasn’t been concerned about it, but the left side is definitely having a few more issues than the right side

has this happened to anyone else? If it continues I’ll call the plastic surgeon’soffice, but I wanted to throw it out to the peanut gallery first.

Hi Melbo, haven't been on this site for quite a while so only seeing your post now. I had a lumpectomy 5 years ago and radiation and the radiation can change the colour of the areola, mine is still much whiter then the other one but no cause for concern.

Thanks for the response. I haven’t started radiation yet, so that can’t be the cause of what is going on with me right now. Hopefully it’s something else innocuous

I doesn't surprise me that I could be wrong about the radiation as oftentimes I think we are just told things to make us feel better, but I definitely have a whiter areola since I had my lumpectomy and five years down the line I am no worse off. It must be all part and parcel of the whole thing. I don't think you need worry about it.
