Hip pain with running

Hello,

I have always been active before, during and after diagnosis and treatment. I am 54, on anastrozole, monthly zoladex injections and every 6 months a Zoledronic Acid infusion. My bone density was good before starting the meds. I run a few times a week and lately my hips have been hurting a bit while I run but really hurt afterwards. At first I thought it was bursitis or some soft tissue issue because I had not run for 6 weeks after a symmetry surgery and it started when I started back running. I worry that now running could be doing more harm than good but I would hate to stop because it does wonders for my mental health. I only do about 3-4 miles about 3x a week.

Any one else struggling with this type of issue? Wondering if it is age, meds or a combination of both. I do take my citracal and have added glucosamine. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

bam320, I have had hip pain that got much worse on anastrozole (I was 48 when I started on it). Before going on anastrozole, I also found out that I have osteoporosis in both hips, so I get Prolia injections every six months. I saw an orthopedic specialist this year and found out that I have multiple problems in my hips that are going to require surgery to fix, along with a lot of inflammation. I asked if the inflammation could come from the anastrozole or Prolia, and he said "good question" and "possibly."

I used to do a lot of walking/running and bike riding. Now the only one I can do without a lot of pain is bike riding. The doctor told me definitely DON'T try to run- it will make things worse. If I even try to speed walk, it will hurt at first, and then I can work through it when the endorphins kick in. But afterwards, I can barely move. Not worth it.

My advice is to report your hip pain to your MO. Mine ordered MRI's to rule out mets, and that's when they found the other problems and referred me to a orthopedic. I understand your frustration at not being able to do the exercise that you love.

I urge you to see your doctor about your hip pain. Here's why:

I'm an avid runner, was running/training for a bunch of races spring 2018. I started feeling pain in my right hip and ignored it, thinking it was just fatigue or possibly a groin strain. Long story not so long, my pelvis fractured from running . I ran three races with it that way, a 5k, half marathon and a 10k--literally could not walk at the end of that 10k race. I was on crutches for nearly 10 weeks and it was a real slog to get back into running safely. Then I got BC :(

Yours is probably not that, but still wouldn't you rather make sure?
