What is the best advice your MO (or other dr) gave you?

Periodically on here I have seen people post some really great advice that their MO gave them and they always remembered it. If your MO (or other dr) gave you words of wisdom, please share them. Mine hasn't....I really like her but have only seen her twice (and once was a phone call appt) so she really hasn't had much opportunity to share much with me outside of the basics of treatment and my tumor info. Thank you.

"Go live your life." That's what my MO said during my only follow-up visit with him. When I asked what my schedule for appts with him would be, he said that was up to me. Some people feel better with regular appointments, and for other people, they just feel more anxiety. So I could pick. Since I have regular appointments with 3 other people (my BS, my PCP, and the ARNP from the "survivorship clinic,") it seemed like I might as well drop him out of my schedule.

Mine recommended I see an endocrinologist when I mentioned I'd fractured my pelvis while running. Good thing too, turns out I have osteoporosis. So now I'm on Tymlos and recovering from a broken foot, also suffered from running (was training for a marathon, the bone just . . .broke).

I obsessively researched and questioned everything (which was a good thing), but as I was finishing 'active treatment' I was still very much in the 'what else can I do?' mode. In raising this question (again) to my very good and kind oncologist, he said, "We have done all the recommended treatments. You are doing all the healthy lifestyle recommendations (exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, very little alcohol etc.), the rest we have to leave to God." (Insert 'fate' if the God reference doesn't work for you.)

A friend who was a cancer survivor told me to "keep moving, keep moving, keep moving".........also very good advice.

ruthbru, thanks for this. It is the conclusion I keep resisting and realizing, over and over. I want to have MORE I can do to stay healthy. I want MORE control. But in truth, if I'm doing "all the healthy" things, there isn't really anything else I can do. I have to surrender to fate.

And very good advice from your friend, too. Thanks again.

Mu surgeon advised me to try CBD oil for my anxiety during. CBD in pill form has been fabulous for me and definitely helped steady me during surgery and treatment. It also helped with surgery recovery pain. I don't often use CBD now but it was wonderous for me during!

Togethertolearn.........I get so confused by CBD and whether it is actually even legal where I live and, if so, where to even get it. I have a long and extensive history of anxiety, taking this at times would be helpful I am sure.

I get CBD capsules from Fresh Thyme or straight from the Sunsoil website.

While I was stressing out about chemo, my MO said:

“It’s best if you don’t have any preconceived notions about any aspects of your treatment.”

This advice was my guiding light as I went through chemo, surgery, radiation, and now six years of hormone therapy without any huge dramas.
