Thank you to all the people that responded to my last post!
i had my follow up mammo and ultrasound. Mammo found a new focal asymmetry in medial breast. Radiologist and sonographer could not guarantee it was benign, so gave me Birads 3 and said he was willing to biopsy it, if I was nervous to wait six months. I scheduled, but don’t know if I want to go thru with it. I was very surprised that they only used ultrasound to go right to the spot in the breast and not the rest of breast or my left one. Is this normal?

I’m in military healthcare system at a teaching hospital, so I’m wondering if I should pay out of pocket for another breast ultrasound. I have very dense breast.

Thank you

Any ultrasounds I've had on a breast or other body part has been limited to whatever area of interest was shown on a mammogram or other scan. As far as I know, ultrasounds aren't used as fishing expeditions. There may be doctors who order a wider area for an ultrasound, but mine haven't.

The people who responded to your last post may not ever see this one. When I respond to a thread, I look for that thread to pop up again on the "Active Posts" lists - I don't always remember the name of who posted and I certainly don't look for new posts by that individual. I look for the subject line. So it would be better if you stick with your original thread so that those who responded to your initial questions get the benefit of seeing the outcome of your follow-up screening. It's also helpful to have all the information about your situation is in one place. I don't recall seeing your original post so I don't know why you had this call back mammogram and ultrasound, which makes it difficult to comment.

I can tell you that it is normal for a diagnostic ultrasound to only examine the specific area of concern. This is similar to the diagnostic mammogram, which focuses in with a magnified view on the specific area of concern.

I can't say whether you should pay for a full ultrasound because I don't know why you had the callback.
