I had a 3D mammogram last week—and got a callback that I need an ultrasound of both breasts. It says that they see multiple shadows in both breasts. I am trying not to freak out—but multiple shadows does sound worrisome. It could be cysts. I am very prone to cysts and have fibrocystic breasts. And I had the mammogram on the first day of my period. Anyone have experience with shadows on the mammogram?

Multiple shadows is actually a good thing, since having multiple cancerous masses is much more unusual than just having one. But having multiples of something benign, like cysts, is pretty common.

And yes, shadows on a mammogram can just be cysts: https://www.mydr.com.au/womens-health/mammograms

"A number of things other than cancer can produce an abnormality on your mammogram.

    • Shadows — these can due to increased density of breast tissue or harmless (benign) cysts."

thank you for your response!! I have the ultrasound tomorrow. I read the report and it said multiple enlarging round/oval masses on each side. So I hope that the ultrasound shows that they are all cysts.
