Hello,

I’m wondering if anyone has any insights on this. I’m 43, and have have had 2 normal 3D mammos and ultrasounds (due for my annual next month). I have, for years experienced stabbing lightning bolt feelings- randomly in my left breast. Recently it feels as if someone is pinching my nipple randomly throughout the day- that’s been for the past 1.5 years. The past couple months the pain seems to start at the nipple and radiate in towards my chest.

I can’t find much info on this, all the breast pain I can find on google seems more like PMS pain. This is sharp, stabbing pains. Any thoughts??? Thank you!

Just that if you are having 3D mammos in conjunction with ultrasounds it isn’t likely to be anything serious, but more likely hormonal and/or fibrocystic

As long as it's been going on, it's very unlikely to be cancer. But you should see a breast specialist to determine what's going on as there are many benign breast conditions.

I'd consider if this is a pinched nerve. The 4th intercostal nerve innervates the nipple and it arises from the thoracic region. Carrying a bag, slouching, sleeping on one side etc can all lead to ongoing muscle tension and nerve impingement. A registered massage therapist might be worth trying.

Thank you for your thoughts on this. It is so random, and it has been waking me up in the middle of the night too. Some days there will be no pain at all, others it’s random flashes/pinches.

What kind of doctor is a breast specialist? Are they who I go to for mammos? I tried googling but I’m not coming up with much other than OBGYNs.

Thank you again for these insights.

Do you have a breast center at your local hospital? The one I go to does mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, and has breast surgeons on their staff, so it was a very one-stop kind of place. Why don't you call yours and ask if you should see someone there, or your GYN?

If you live in an area with a small hospital, you may need to contact a breast surgeon in a bigger town.
