Hi everyone! I am a 43 year old woman who has had 3 years of normal 3D mammograms until this year. I got a callback last week where they wanted to do a diagnostic mammogram on both breasts and and ultrasound/cone on one. I just got my screening mammogram and it says the following:

Left: architectural distortion, mass

Right: Calcifications

I wish I hadn't read the report now, I haven't slept at all this past week and there is ZERO chance I will tonight after reading the word MASS on my mammogram.

I want this all to be over tomorrow, but the sense of dread is overwhelming.

Could these all turn out okay?!

Hi, I know how you feel, I was there more than once.

First, a mass doesn't mean cancer. Cysts, fibroids, fat necrosis, and other benign growths can present as masses. Same with calcifications, there are benign conditions that can cause them too.

Many women have call backs, and don't have cancer. That said, obviously you know it could be cancer. Waiting and wondering is the hardest part. Try to relax. When you go for the call back, and have the mammogram and ultrasound, you will likely have a much better idea of what you are dealing with before you leave to go home. Someone, likely the radiologist, will talk with you.

Remember that you are having more tests because they don't know if it is cancer and that happens a lot in young women like yourself. As nerve racking as it can be, I am very thankful we have all the different diagnostic tests to detect cancer. That is what saved my life.... twice!!!!!

There is a whole community here to support you regardless of what the diagnosis is. Are your follow up tests being done tomorrow? Please let us all know how you are doing!
