hello ladies

I am writing in this forum because I am really worried for my mom.

She was diagnosed with IDC 4.8 cm lump her 2 positive and er+ and Pr- grade 2the surgeon doesn't believe it's in lymph nodes

She has had her ct scan now bone and muga are coming up

Based on her lump size and breast cancer type should I prepare myself for a advanced diagnosis? It seems to me a lot of women in this forum have similar characteristic abs hers with more advanced stages

I'm really worried and scared and would love any information.

Thanks again

Sonia

    Hello,

A large lump and PR- are both generally considered negative indicators. On the other hand, clear lymph nodes is positive.

There's really truly no way to know except as your mother moves along the diagnostic process. The CAT scan indicates that your mother's doctor is considering the possibility of spread and looking for it. Hopefully they won't find anything. Either way there is still a long diagnostic road ahead.

This early part with the waiting and not knowing is very difficult. Anything you can do to help care for your own mental health will help you support your mother better.

    Hi!

I had a 5 cm. lump and was ER+/PR+/HER2+, and was successfully treated with chemo, targeted therapy, surgery, and radiation. I'm currently on year 6 of hormonal therapy (Aromasin + Zoladex). Yes, the CT scan will look to see if the cancer has traveled elsewhere and will give her doctors another look at her lymph nodes. The MUGA will provide a baseline for heart functioning because the targeted therapies for HER2+ cancer (Herceptin and Perjeta) can temporarily interfere with heart function.

If your Mom's cancer is localized (just in the breast and axillary nodes), she will probably have a similar treatment plan to mine: chemo before surgery, surgery, radiation, and then a year of Herceptin. It is a marathon and not a sprint, but HER2+ cancer is very treatable these days. ((Hugs)) I hope you get more information soon.

    Hello Elaine

Thank you so much for your reply it really gives me hope in such a down time it looks like your treatment plan is very similar to my moms as the dr already gave us her plan prior to the scans.

I think I am just googling and lurking through so much information and almost scaring myself to peices coz of the lump size and the idea of her having scans etc

I wish you all nothing but good health and positivity for being such strong women, I never knew how strong women really could be.

    Cheers

    Sonia

    Sonia,

Beware of Dr. Google! You can find all kinds of old, out-dated information out there. Yes, HER2+ cancer can be aggressive because it tends to replicate quickly. But, just remember -- chemo works best with Grade 3 cancer because it targets fast growing cells. My chemo wiped out the cancer in my breast and compromised lymph node. Hope your Mom is as lucky!

Sonia - as Sal said, it is most important that you are there to listen to the docs and provide back up "ears" for your Mom. So it's very important that you don't freak yourself out. You need to be the strong one now. If you go to My Profile, you can fill out the diagnosis and any treatment plans to date. It can always be adjusted later. This helps other members to be aware so they can provide the best thoughtful answers.

    thank you minus2

Yes you are right there is this voice telling me to be strong for her. I am the youngest daughter of three kids. I am 35 with two little kids myself whom I also need to be strong for.

My mom was always the backbone of our family and to understand this might change for a little bit scares me.

For the past seven years my dad has also battled heart disease with a strobe and bypass so he also relies on my mom. I feel like I am preparing for some kind of “end”. I pray I can also find te strength for her as i know she is very scared.

I will for sure fill out the profile.

The waiting for results is the hardest part. I know this has got to be so hard for you. I have a daughter who is 30, so I feel your pain and anxiety. Our brains go on full speed ahead when we're waiting, and it's really tough to quiet all the thoughts that come into our heads. I think what you're feeling is very normal when a parent is going through something you have no control over to help. I'm giving you a virtual hug.
