edited August 2020 in Benign Breast Conditions

I could really use somebody to talk to or advice . I've had problems with my left breast since about 27 I thought I had BC , I had a mamo and 2 ultrasounds and was clear and told I have FIBROCYSTIC breast but I had a lump behind my nipple that nobody could feel but me and they made me feel crazy now here I am 32 and not only is this lump back but it's bigger and I can constantly feel it there without even touching it and it hurts to lay on my stomach . So tonight I laid down and really felt around and my left breast around my nipple is so much thicker and ropier than my right . My right almost feels empty compared to my left breast . It feels thick and full and the lump behind my nipple kind of rolls between my fingers and feels like a grape but does not hurt . Any insight on if this is normal or not ?

Oh, Gina, I'm so sorry you're worried. We call all identify with that. I will say that neither of the lumps I found hurt. The first lump was in my breast and the second lump was in my armpit. Again, they never hurt and I kind of "stumbled" upon them accidentally in the shower. Both times I saw my PCP who ordered an US. Both times the US tech brought in the radiologist who looked at the screen and said I needed to come back for a needle biopsy.

I'm hoping that whatever is growing in your breast is benign. Can you make an appointment with your PCP and ask/beg for an US?

Let us know what happens. This is a wonderful place for support.

    Get yourself to a doctor.

Having fibrocystic breasts is actually pretty normal - in fact over 1/2 of all women have fibrocystic breasts. What you describe might be a fibroadenoma or a cyst. Both are harmless and very common. As we age, our breasts change, and the way that fibrocystic breasts act also changes. While women of any age can develop fibroadenomas, they are more common in younger women - I had one at 16 and another at 20. Cysts too can develop at any age, but many women with fibrocystic breasts start to develop cysts in their 30s. I had more cysts than I could count starting in my mid-30s.

Given the location behind your nipple, this could be something else, such as a benign intraductal papilloma.

Whatever it is, it's likely harmless and benign, since it sounds as though you felt it 5 years ago and now it's back again. And your description - that it rolls between your fingers and feels like a grape - sounds much more likely to be something benign than something serious.

But even if it's very likely that this is nothing serious, you need to find out what it is. Any new lump that doesn't go away on it's own within a couple of weeks, and that isn't cyclical and tied to your periods, needs to be checked out.

See your doctor, and let us know what happens. And until then, don't worry. From your description, the odds are pretty high that this is a common harmless lump.

thank you so much for responding , it doesn’t hurt unless I’m laying on it but I can just feel It in there at all times so I’m guessing it’s getting bigger and pressing on some nerves , I’m just so scared . I made an appointment with my PCP and she did say she will drain it but if it isn’t benign and she punctures it couldn’t that make it worse ? If it were to be the big C word ?

also the whole area around my areola feels thick and ropy but my right breast doesn't feel the same at all . I was hoping someone could tell me that this is possibly normal . My fibrocystic is really bad I've had three kids and my breast are a double D and look like they're fake . No sag at all bc they're so full with tons and tons of lumps they're really heavy but my left breast just feels so much different than the right

The lumpiness and the breast tissue feeling thick and ropy are pretty classic symptoms of having fibrocystic breasts. And yes, one breast can feel different than the other. But you probably should have imaging done just to confirm that everything appears normal.

If your doctor is planning to aspirate, it sounds as though she thinks this is a cyst. Cysts are fluid filled and the fluid can be removed with a needle. I've had this done many times. And if it's solid and not a cyst, first, that won't mean that it's cancer - it could be a solid benign mass such as a fibroadenoma. And even if it is cancer, attempting the aspiration won't puncture anything or cause any problem.

    Hi Gina,

I too have a lump behind my RIGHT nipple that I found in October. I had a with and without contrast dye MRI on Friday June 12th. The oncologist called Monday June 15th and scheduled a CORE biopsy on 3 suspicious areas ( 2 behind my nipple and one on the side of my breast closet to my armpit). They did a Mammogram right after the procedure, and then sent me downstairs to have another MRI ( was not scheduled). I have my follow up with the oncologist Tuesday 23rd for results. I am PRAYING it's nothing, it is my daughter's 18th birthday! I will be thinking of you!! Let's hope we both have good news Tuesday!!!

    Erin

May I join with the discussion. Today is the 18th of August. Yesterday a painful lump suddenly appeared under my left armpit its kinda hard and it affects my left breast. Before this lump appeared few days ago both of my breast have this dull pain. My last mentruation day was August 6. But this breast pain had been going on for 3 days already. I just stopped breastfeeding my 2 year old daughter for 3 months already.Eversince then I noticed several changes happening in my body. By the way I'm turning 31 this Friday. I'll consider your answers and insights as a birthday gift. Thank you ladies.
