Waiting to go for biopsy
Hi everyone, I am new here and here is my story so far. On May 14th, I found a lump in my breast. I was laying in bed and it was like someone grabbed my hand which was resting on my stomach, and lifted it to my chest. As my hand dropped, my finger landed right on the lump. I say Divine Intervention.
I called my doctor the next day to find out they were closed due to phone and water issues. So I called on Monday, got to see my nurse practitioner the next day. She checked me and said she was going to send me for a mammogram and ultrasound. My mom had breast cancer so a little worried. So a few days later, the Breast Screening Clinic called me to see me on the 27th of May for my tests.
On Wednesday I went for my test and my nurse practitioner called me back that afternoon to say they had found something and they want to do a biopsy. She said the lump was not detected by the mammogram but was on the ultrasound. From what I could see on the ultrasound, it was oval, almost like there was a rim around it and it had color around it. Sorry don't know the technical terms. It is located just under my nipple on top of the fat. This morning they called me to schedule me for June 4th for the biopsy and to see the doctor on June 17th.
I am very worried and scared. Can anyone reassure me please. I keep telling myself, it can't be bad if the biopsy is not until the 4th, but them my mind shifts and says well there is a pandemic going on, maybe they can't get you in til then. My mind shifts from it's ok to totally scared. I don't know what to think. Any advice would be great.
Thank you

hi Fitmom!
Wow your story takes me back to my story! I was watching a movie in bed with hubby. And had my hand just laying on my chest and my finger hit something. The lump was on top of my breast so it could be felt easily. Similar story there! I believe that was Devine intervention too!
My cancer wasn’t seen on a mammogram either after feeling my tumor and going for a manual breast exam by a breast center. I have extremely dense breast tissue. The ultrasound after the mammogram saw the blood supply to the tumor and it was all pretty obvious that’s when they said I needed a biopsy
You can get a copy of your mammogram and ultrasound reports which would have a lot more info you could then talk to people here about what the report said
What kind of dr are you going to see on the 17th? So your biopsy is next wk then so that’s good.
The waiting part is the worst. But know we are here for you! I don’t have any advice really. Just know I’m here if you want to chat while your waiting for your biopsy.
I’d get the reports tho and read those. Also you can request the cd of the films. They should all be free since yr the patient.

I have fibrocystic breasts, yeah I saw color also on the ultrasound but unsure what it means, I guess blood supply.
I will have to call on Monday to see if I can get copies, I'm in Canada, so not sure what is allowed and not. I know when I called them back yesterday to tell them that I had my appointment for the biopsy, the receptionist, said good luck and take care. She doesn't usually say things like that. Mind you, I might be reading more into it.
She is a general surgeon and the one that takes care of the Breast Screening clinic.
Yes the waiting is the worse, wish it would go faster. But I will call on Monday to see if I can get those reports.
Thank you so much, so nice to know that I am not totally alone in all this. My husband is great, he is there and supports me. I have no family, both my parents have passed and my siblings and I don't talk. So it's hard. But thank you so much for answering.

Hiya,
Most biopsies are to rule cancer out, not rule it in. Basically, imaging finds a lump. Doctors look at it. They think - well, it probably isn't cancer, but there's a chance it could be cancer. And missing cancer is very bad, better safe than sorry. And they send it for a biopsy. In the USA if the doctor thinks there's even a 3% it is cancer, they will send it for biopsy.
So it probably isn't cancer, but the whole point of the biopsy is that no one, not even the best radiologist in the world, can know for sure without it.
But even if it is cancer, you will deal. It will be a huge pain in the butt and a lot of stress. But knowing is better than not knowing.
Hang in there!

@Salamandra that makes a lot of sense but the unknown is scary. And yes I know I will deal with it if it does happen.
Thank you

Fitmom, I'm sorry you have this worry. Most round and oval shaped images are fatty and benign, by my understanding. Remember the biopsy is to find out what it is, because they don't know yet. The 4th seems like a long time from now, but it's a just a few days. Those few days will be stressful, but waiting is hard. Hang in there!

Fitmom: you’re welcome. Sending a hug your way. It’s never easy waiting. Keep us updated if you don’t mind. We are here for you. They should give you copies of reports and you should be able to get the films on cd/dvd disk. Not sure what the rules are in Canada. Regarding getting records. But in the USA we can request our reports and films. Let us know how it all goes.
