I'm undergoing chemotherapy (ACx4, Tx12) and have a port placed in my chest. I can't find any definitive limitations on exercise with regard to port placement. I've seen everything from "no pushups" to "no restrictions..."

Does anyone have some definitive information/ data regarding exercise and port placement? Are there things I shouldn't do?

When I first got my port, my surgeon told me to wait a week or so before swimming. But, I've swam dozens of times with it since, and it's been fine. Keep an eye on your port; if the skin over it gets red and angry, it might be infected. Personally, I've had mine for almost six years now, and I've never had a problem with it. I also did AC X 4 and T X 12; its not a picnic, but it's doable. Good luck!

I have never looked for data on this, but I have had a port for over 8 years. Ports can be placed in different locations on your chest, or like mine, in the little hollow where my shoulder and upper chest meet (some even have it in their upper arm). I don’t recall any restrictions beyond the healing period and have never felt the need to restrict my movements or activities because of the port. It has been bumped a few times (wild play with grandchildren) but that just hurt for a minute and did no damage. All the best.

I worked out with my port, mainly swimming and running. Started the day after the port placement surgery. After each chemo I waited till the next day to go to the pool. My oncologist encouraged exercise. Due to chemo, the intensity was of course much lower than before but I loved doing it and it kept me same. Best to you
