Good morning, khoagland. I was just speaking with my MO yesterday about my concerns with starting tamoxifen since I've had fibroids for years. I had an ultrasound performed right before my surgery last year where my ob/gyn counted my fibroids and recorded their locations and sizes. My MO promises me that I'll have a uterine lining measurement each year at my ob/gyn while I'm taking the drug.

Sorry I can't answer your question. Hoping someone chimes in as I've read that the drug can increase the size of fibroids and cause other uterine issues, too.

My mother got a hysterectomy on Tamoxifen due to what they said was some kind of uterine cancer (she later claimed they misdiagnosed her) but I don’t know what it did to her fibroids.

    Hello,

I didn't have fibroids prior to taking Tamoxifen but I did develop a 6cm mass that turned out to be endometrial cancer (uterine cancer). I was pre-menopausal and the only symptom was abnormal bleeding (between periods).

I just had a hysterectomy with all the trimmings (tubes, ovaries, etc.) two days ago and I want to warn others taking Tamoxifen. Please be vigilant if you are taking Tamoxifen.

Yes, Tamoxifen increased the number of fibroids I had and made them grow larger. Because of that my uterus enlarged. I had a hysterectomy last Feb. I never had bleeding only some abdominal discomfort. There are some good post on this subject if you do a search.

I've been on Tamoxifen for 2.5 years and a recent MRI of my upper hamstring revealed uterine fibroids, so I went to see my GYN. I had an ultrasound last week that revealed a endometrial thickening, enlarged uterus, 5 uterine fibroids, 2 polyps, Nabothian cysts in the cervix, and some fluid in the endometrial cavity. It's practically a yard sale down there. I've had one abnormal symptom: continuous, daily discharge even though I'm 52 and going through menopause. I never mentioned it to my MO because I thought it was a side effect of Tamo - turns out it's not. GYN says polyps must be removed and she wants me to come in to discuss other things that will be biopsied. On top of that, I'm a teacher and am anxious about how I will juggle school and a hysterectomy/cancer treatment. I know I should think positive thoughts, but I had a heart attack at 41 due to a rare, undiagnosed heart condition, and I had breast cancer at 49, so I'm a little jaded about my prospects.

ReadyAbout, I am sorry you have to go through this. My daughter is also a teacher and this has been a terrible school year so far. I am postmenopausal. When I had a D&C they found out the fibroids gave a false ultrasound reading. My endometrial thickening wasn't as bad as they thought. That was in August and by Feb my uterus was enlarged with numerous fibroids. The surgery was not terrible. I felt better after 3-days and did not need anything stronger than Tylenol. The worst part is that you can't bend or lift. So no loading the dishwasher or dryer or vacuum cleaning. After 2-weeks you can drive. If you can get in with Covid get it done. Best wishes...
