What option to choose?

I was diagnosed recently first with LCIS, then DCIS and IDC. My tumor was only 3,5 mm big, so they found it early.

I just had a baseline mammogram before the start of radiation and they found another spot that had to be biopsied. They found Atypia.

Now my options are:

  1. Move forward with radiation
  2. Lumpectomy with radiation
  3. Mastectomy without radiation

I am leaning towards the middle way, so option 2.

Can anyone with a similar diagnosis give me some advice? Thanks in advance.

    Kathryn,

It looks like we have an almost identical diagnosis exceptmy idc was found first and 7mm, still tiny. I had actually made the decision for a BMX from the get go because I’m 46 with dense breasts and my BS said it would decrease my chances further. After my surgery, they found the DCIS and LCIS which both did not show up even on the MRI. He was very happy I made that decision because the LCIS alone made my chances of getting a new cancer in either breast much more likely.

At the end of the day, you need to do what you are most comfortable with. The surgery is more difficult, but I’m at the tail end. Good luck to you!

Hi Kathrin. My stats are similar to yours and I was very happy with my choice of a lumpectomy + radiation. Are you planning to take Tamoxifen or an AI? I was ER/PR+ too, and the simple version of my MO's explanation was that the Tamoxifen (or an AI) would prevent the LCIS from "turning into cancer." (My words, not hers. I'm simplifying. :))

Let us know how we can help.

I was originally diagnosed with DCIS, but upon pathology exam, they found an additional 3.2 mm of IDC. I had already had a lumpectomy and they had already said radiation, so my treatment plan didn't change. I had 20 rads, 16 with 4 boosts. I'm post-menopausal and almost 63, so I'm on letrozole. I was ER/PR pos. HER2 neg. Doing ok on it. I am 18 months out. Looks like you chose a lumpectomy?
