Doctors office called this afternoon said it was abnormal - asymmetry in the left and distortion in the right. I had 2d and 3D. They also said I have extremely dense breasts. Bilateral diagnostic and ultrasounds on Friday.

I'll be 40 in August.

How concerned should I be?

JL - since it's your first, there are no previous studies for comparison. It's quite common to be called back for an ultrasound. Not really anything to worry about at this time.

waiting is hard, but just try to busy your mind. Its not at all uncommon to be called back, especially to establish a solid baseline. It's also quite common to have dense breasts - another reason to be called back because the fibrous nature of the tissue appears white, just like calcifications would. They describe it as finding a polar bear in a snow storm, so they like to get more views. Did the report provide a BI-RADS rating?

My sister gets called back EVERY.TIME - literally. She's 51 and has never had a mammogram without being called back for diagnostic and ultrasound. Still no issues, no biopsies, etc.

Good luck to you and wishing you an All Clear!

If there is one thing I've learned about breasts in the last 6 weeks, it's that dense ones suck. I know, because at 32, mine are still pretty tough. The amount of pushing the poor radiologist had to to to get the core needle through the tissue and into my tumor, and the bruising. Oi! Thank heavens for local anesthesia. Noit to mention how it affects screening results.

I've also learned that breast tissue is weird and lumpy. Sometimes an asymmetrical breast is just an odd arrangement of the connective tissue and ducts/nodules. The ultrasound is good at finding solid masses though. And if a biopsy is called for, I wouldn't be alarmed. Failing imaging tests, they'd have to get hands-on any suspicious dense tissue.

Either way my fingers are crossed for you and I hope it goes well! This community has been great so far and well be cheering you on whichever results you get.
