Has anyone on here had gastric bypass after BC?

I'm in the process of getting qualified for the gastric sleeve now. If all goes well, I might be able to have surgery in May. Have you gone to a physician or had the informational seminars about the surgery yet?

The good thing about the gastric sleeve is that unlike a bypass, the sleeve allows you to absorb vitamins and minerals through a portion of your stomach. With the bypass, many were vitamin deficient because food went directly into the small intestine.

I went to the seminar and started at the bariatric center, with the idea that I didn't want surgery. I worked with the dietician, lost 15 pounds, which was a start compared to what I have to lose, but I have gained it back. I have an appointment with the doctor next week and the surgeon next month. My mom had gastric bypass 17 years ago, lost 150 pounds and has kept 130 of it off. I just am not looking forward to another surgery. When I saw my oncologist last month, he asked if I had considered the surgery, which really got me thinking. He said better now than waiting another 5 or 10 years and that he has had many patients do great with it, but he recommended not getting the lap band.

Apparently, the lap band is falling out of favor along with the bypass. The sleeve seems to be the safer way to gone especially d/t the ability to absorb vits/minerals better. My insurance requires three months of nutrition counseling and weight loss. It's very hard since I love food and I have used food in the past for comfort. I have my second weigh in on Wednesday. All my doctors are on board iwth this decision. In fact, I had to start diabetic meds this year d/t pre-diabetes. I've also heard that estrogen can metabolize in fat cells so if I can get rid of some of the fat, perhaps my estrogen positive cancer will not come back.

Kamboka, It sounds like we have similar situations. Keep me posted how it goes. I see the bariatric nurse on Monday and the surgeon next month. Not sure if I will move forward with surgery, but I have to do something.

grade1teachr: I will let you know how my weigh in goes on Wednesday. Luckily, I go to the 1230 class so I can fast before the scales. :) I assume you are talking about next Monday for your appointment. I'll be anxious to see how it goes for you.

I'm trying not to eat anything salty today getting ready for that weigh in. I need to lose 13 pounds by mid-April. It's not easy being menopausal and on AIs.

I had my weigh in today. It was slightly disappointing. Not because I didn't lose weight but because I had the wrong starting weight. I thought my weight was the higher number from last month's nutrition class. Apparently, they use the number from my doctor's consultation which was lower. So instead of losing 6 pounds, I only get credit for 3.9. I need to lose 13 total to qualify. I have two months to do that. It's not easy. When I was young, I could lose 20 lbs a month, now I struggle to lose 4 lbs a month. I have to travel for three days later this month and it's all eating out.

Ugh! I know it’s so hard when you’ve worked hard and then the scale doesn’t show it as much as we would like.
