Prolia and high blood pressure

Hi all,

I was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis after a decade of Femara and probably not taking enough calcium and vit. D.

Received my Prolia shot mid Dec and noticed a month in that my blood pressure is changing. While I was on the normal side with caffeine etc I now have a really weird high blood pressure, anywhere from 139/101 or 148/98. High heart rate too.

I am running/hiking and my resting pulse used to be super low. Could it be the Prolia? Internet gives me mixed results.

Thank you.

Interesting question Calico. I have been on Prolia since 2014 and don't have High BP problems, but I hope some one knows the answer for future reference.

    Thank you MinusTwo.

I have been suffering from anxiety and take 0.5 mg Lorazepam a day and despite that, I was 'normal' before the shot. I hope it's the Prolia and wears off.

    Hi!

I've had high blood pressure since I was 40 (it runs in my family). It's controlled with three drugs (Lisinopril, Amlodipine, and Hydrochlorothiazide). I've been on Prolia for 1.5 years, and it hasn't affected my blood pressure at all. Good luck!

But while we're on the subject... What about Prolia and hi cholesterol? I saw one possible reference that it could effect LDL. My LDL keeps going up even though my HDL and Triglycerides keep getting better. Anybody else noticed this?

I actually just put in a call to Amgen to ask about this issue.

    MinusTwo,

I saw that too when I researched the subject about the high blood pressure. I am due for my annual next month. My LDL was normal for the fist time last year since I was post menopausal (after treatment, hyst, Femara)....I am not going to be a happy camper if my LDL will be up .

Amgen was very informative. A trained pharmacist took my questions and had a nurse call me back promptly. In a 3 year trial with 7800 women from 60-91 years of age - 1/2 were given Prolia and 1/2 a placebo. The numbers aren't much, but they are there.

7.2% in the Prolia group had raised cholesterol. 6/1% in the placebo group had raised cholesterol. So they are listing it as a possible side effect, but no way to know if it's more related to the drug or the age of the participants.

Unfortunately I expect my PCP is going to tell me to quit eating butter. It's the only thing left that could be causing the LDL increase. Actually I've given up most everything else I love, so probably not.

MinusTwo, I replied on the other thread and realized I forgot to mention the most important thing:

Butter is life. That is all!

Yup - my feelings about butter exactly. As my son says when we're out and a bread basket appears, 'maybe you should try a little bread with your butter.'
