Lidocaine patches?

I just had a mastectomy on January 17. I did not have extensive lymphnode dissection, but I am having a burning sensation in my upper arm and armpit. I understand that this is neuropathy, and wondered if anyone has had success using lidocaine patches for this? Also, how long does this burning typically last? Thanks so much!

I use 4% lidocaine patches for a variety of aches and pains and find them effective. However, your surgery is fairly recent and a mx plus axillary node dissection take time to heal. I would call my surgeon before using these patches as well as speaking with her about your pain. Wishing you the best

Hi gigielspeth, I wouldn't put a lidocaine patch anywhere near your incision. The burning sensation means you are starting to heal and it does take some time to go a way. Swelling can also cause discomfort. I took a low dose of Gabapentin and that helped with the discomfort along with ice gel pack, 20 mins on 20mins off. I know they use the patches after knee surgery, but that incision is stapled and not such a tender area. I would be worried the patch would irritate your skin and maybe that would cause an infection.

gigiel - Even if you did not have extensive node dissection, I would consider lymhadema before I considered neuropathy. Take a look at this link below.

Also I agree - don't take anything oral or apply anything physical to treat your body at this point without talking to your surgeon. It's too soon. Is it possible you've raised your arms above your shoulders? Or lifted a gallon of milk?
